Why did Rose and Lissa run away in the first place?

There were several theories of why they ran away...
1) Lissa thought someone was stalking her so they needed to flee.
2) Ms. Karp "compulsion"ed Rose into taking Lissa away.
3) After Ms. Karp was taken away, Rose was worried about guardians taking Lissa like Ms. Karp warned.
Does anyone recall? I remember Natalie asking Rose, but I don't know if it ever really came out in the story.

rose ran away so that she could keep lissa safe from other people using her element for their oun personal gain.
I think it was mainly because Sonja compelled Rose to and because Lissa was going stark-raving coo coo for coco puffs.
I'm pretty sure it ended up being because Lissa was cutting herself that rose felt they were no longer safe at the school. Lissa was to be protected at all cost though. That's what i got.
