Ken Magee | 58 comments I wondered why people joined goodreads and whether they got what they expected.

I joined primarily to promote my book Dark Tidings, but quickly found that I was much more interested in the chat, comments and people! I think I've lost a bit of focus on the book, but I am having fun!

message 2: by Susan (new)

Susan I came across Goodreads quite by accident, whilst looking for bestseller lists.......I was amazed that such a thing existed!

I'm now a member of four groups which are all brilliant....Goodreads has certainly added to the pleasure of reading.

message 3: by Shelli (new)

Shelli My sister told me to join because I love reading...that was several years ago and now I moderate a group here!

message 4: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments I found GR by accident when using Google to find ideas for my in person book group discussions. I don't tweet or facebook but if ever there was an on line forum designed for me then this is it!

message 5: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments My ex-colleague forced me too years ago before groups existed and it was a completely different site. Then 13 months ago I decided to catalogue my books after failing to find a simple, free mobile app.

message 6: by Louise (new)

Louise I used to really like the visual bookshelf app on facebook, it meant I could read and review my books, and then when I loaned them out to friends, could look back to see what I had thought of them (I have memory like a sieve)
I also get a third of way through abook and think "I've read this" so having some sort of record helps to me confirm that.
Now I'm on here, good to read other reviews and suggestions.

message 7: by Katie (new)

Katie (--katie--) | 69 comments I joined after a friend told me about the site, and now I use it to keep track of what books I've read, and join in discussions.

message 8: by Lynne - The Book Squirrel (last edited Jan 12, 2012 03:04PM) (new)

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments I joined to list the books I have got and read, I haven't looked back since and love keeping up with reviews and comments. I have also found some nice people who like to talk books.

I love doing the challenges too and it has made me read so many more genre and more authors than what I used to read - Horror and Fantasy.

message 9: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelleylea) | 30 comments I found GR by chance and it has been excellent in helping me keep track of the bopoks I have read. It is also ideal for finding new reads and checking on recommendations for books I might like to try. I do enjoy the groups too and enjoy reading them, even if I dont always take part.

message 10: by Esther (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 270 comments I was attracted by the idea of being able to catalogue all my books - which has been a dream of my since childhood.
I've tried book journals but my handwriting is appalling and my Excel spreadsheets became unwieldy.
Facebook introduced me to Shelfari but it didn't answer my needs so Googled 'book cataloging software' and chose GR.

When I first joined the internet I was active in many Yahoo groups including several about books. However the book clubs always seemed to read books that were expensive and difficult for me to get hold of.
After trying a RL book club and finding the interpersonal dynamic too tiresome I decided to investigate GR's group discussions. It was one of the best decisions I've made.

No idea why I joined - just idle surfing probably. I listed all my books first and then joined this group back in March I think - find the discussions here more fun than anything on Facebook which I have since ditched. Best bit is the recommendations we get from each other.

message 12: by Weenie (new)

Weenie I think I stumbled across GR on someone's blog and it's been great to keep track of my reading. I've no doubt that it's actually encouraged me to read more too, especially the challenges!

I enjoy groups, reading recommendations, comparing people's books/reviews etc.

I've also been fortunate to have been chosen for a few Giveaways too, so that's been another bonus!

message 13: by Shel (new)

Shel (sheliruss) I found out about it on a blog and joined up straight away!

I love cataloguing everything I have read (that I can remember) and reviewing books. I have also tried lots of new books because of GR and have made some new friends.

I have no-one to talk about books with in real life, so this is perfect for me!

message 14: by Angie (new)

Angie | 18 comments I found out about GR via facebook, but now find that most of my time online is spent on here rather than facebook!

I love to catalogue the books i've read and get recommendations for more, but I also love being in touch with like minded people, as none of my friends seem to my love of books.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

I had a friend recommend this to me as he uses this site. I have enjoyed this site a lot have even read books I would not have even thought of reading.

Also like recording what books I have read.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I found out about GR while on another site, so decided to investigate it. I'm glad I did, it's brill. I'm meeting loads of great people and books.
Gr even manages to get me away from Face Book!! :)

message 17: by Bill (new)

Bill | 2773 comments I found out about it when checking somebody's blog and thought it looked very interesting. I belong to 5 book groups now and really enjoy the interchange it provides.

message 18: by Julie (new)

Julie (joolees) I joined GR when the book journal I was using to keep track of my books was full. I love being able to look back at what I've read so easily. The best part of GR though is to see what others are reading and reading their reviews.

message 19: by Emma (new)

Emma Jones | 3 comments I joined GR last year after finding it on Facebook. I didn't use GR much at first but then I didn't get the chance to read as much as I would have liked either, but in the last 6 months my hours have been cut at work and I have a bit more time on my hands - so here I am!
I like the way I can list and rate the books I've read and also make a note of the books I want to read.
This past month though I found that I wanted to talk to people about books, see what others have read and to find new books so I took the plunge and joined two groups. Already my to-read list has grew by 20 - I can see my kids starving and my bf leaving me due to me having my nose permantly in a book :)

message 20: by Dave (new)

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments I joined GR sometime last year as a way of keeping track of the books I read. I still keep excel spreadsheet as well (must be the anal accountant in me).

Not many of my friends are big readers so the discussions here are really useful for recommendations and others thoughts.

Louise wrote: "I used to really like the visual bookshelf app on facebook, it meant I could read and review my books, and then when I loaned them out to friends, could look back to see what I had thought of them ..."

(I had Visual Bookshelf too). I had moved away from the UK and joined a local bookclub here, in Singapore. I was googling books to suggest and stumbled on Goodreads. At the time this was the only UK book group on Goodreads (and there were only about 20 members!!!) Being on here, makes me feel a whole lot closer to home :)

message 22: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) | 18 comments I think a friend had posted something that linked to here on facebook... I signed up but then didn't really start using it to keep a proper track of what I was reading until just over a year ago. I love it - great to keep track of my books, find out about new ones and chat about books.

message 23: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (asfus) | 119 comments I joined Goodreads as a friend on Twitter recommended it. I gave up Twitter shortly after that as I found it very unfocussed.

message 24: by Ant (new)

Ant (antsneath) Being a regular user of 'Last.fm' cataloguing what music I listen to, I needed something similar to catalogue everything I read. Joining Goodreads was a no-brainer in that regard.
I then discovered the book recommendations and massive community here at GR so it's become a regular site to visit for me..

Bill | 2773 comments Dave wrote: "I joined GR sometime last year as a way of keeping track of the books I read. I still keep excel spreadsheet as well (must be the anal accountant in me).

I also use a MS Access database for recording my books, plus a manual diary sort of book where I track books I want to buy and then books I've bought.. Lists are our friends.. :0)

message 26: by J (new)

J | 2 comments I first joined as a way to find interesting books to read. It's great to be able to read the synopsis and everyone's reviews. I'm also enjoying cataloging my books that I'm now reading and it's enjoyable to track my progress whilst reading. I'd like to try writing some reviews at some point too. I've had a pretty bad couple of years health-wise and this is all pretty god medicine for me at present too. I'd like to use the sight a bit more.

message 27: by J (new)

J | 2 comments Oops.. I've been auto-corrected... Good medicine...and..like to use the site more.
:-)

Samantha (Bookbliss87) (cindybubbles) I've recently joined this site. It was recommended to me by a family member on facebook who reads about as much as I do.

I like that I can catalogue my books on here and keep track of everything I've read and I always find new books through recommendations, so this site is perfect for me.

message 29: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie (stefanie_1973) | 12 comments I found out about Goodreads on twitter. I love it! Its a great way to catalog books (and review them) that you have read. I have also found a lot of 'to reads' based on other's reviews and recommendations.

It's also a great way to meet new friends who share the love of reading.

message 30: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 23, 2012 11:36PM) (new)

In addition to posting my book, several friends recommended it to me. Although I'm still learning to navigate and find groups that suit me, I appreciate that the people who read the books are REAL book lovers/readers, not paid reviewers.

message 31: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (26kathryn) | 39 comments I tried several similar sites, but goodreads is definitely the best for me. I wanted a place to catalogue my books and be able to rate and review them. I was here a while before I started joining groups and taking part in discussions.

message 32: by Ken (new)

Ken Magee | 58 comments We've had Lots of different reasons for joining, but isn't it great that we've nearly all found that it's the discussions and friends which keep us all coming back!

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

i joined due to thereadables(youtube) awesome yet inspiring interest in books as well as her amazing dedication to her books + reading.
i love books as well and goodreads has been an exciting platform for me to know other bookworms, when i thought i was the only one :)

message 34: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Woodman (ellstara) | 6 comments As well as my love for reading in my spare time I enjoy entering competitions, especially ones for books and it was this that brought me to this site. I am so pleased though, I am really enjoying listing my books and reading the reviews plus looking through the posts in this group. I am sure over the next few weeks once I have become more familiar with the layout there will be many more things I love, but one thing for sure I am here to stay!

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (saroar13) I joined after coming across a widgit on wordpress where I've just started my blog and loved it straight away. I'd just decided that I wanted to start reviewing all the books I read and then I came across GR, perfect! Although my to read list does now keep getting longer and longer by finding great recommendations on groups like these..

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Ken wrote: "We've had Lots of different reasons for joining, but isn't it great that we've nearly all found that it's the discussions and friends which keep us all coming back!"

Yes, lots of interesting people on GR. Best wishes.

I know what you mean. Enjoy!

message 38: by Leanne (new)

Leanne I joined good reads after doing a google search! I like to keep track of what I've read (I used to be an accidental re-reader until I got the Goodreads app on my iPhone) and using a notepad document wasn't cutting it anymore!
I love being able to look how many stars a book got before I begin reading it

message 39: by Mark (new)

Mark Osborne (mark003livecouk) I came across Goodreads by accident. I decided to join up as I like the idea of listing my books, giving those star ratings and allowing others to giving their opinions.

message 40: by Julie (new)

Julie Davis (juliedavis1969) | 7 comments I came across Good reads by accident and started using it firstly to record what I had read in the past. Now am using it to track the books I read in a year and have joined a few groups as I enjoy the social aspect as well.

message 41: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 5 comments I by accident I came across this website but i'm so glad i did check it out!!! i like the idea of rating, reviewing, listing books I've read and want to read - it helps me keep my focus and to feel able to read quicker in a weird way.

I'm really glad there's groups on here too and being able to talk to people who loves books too, as there's not many people i know who understand or feel so deeply about the written word as me, so glad to know there's other people out there who loves books too. =D

message 42: by Sami (new)

Sami I came across it via someone's blog on Tumblr, and joined so I could have a log of all the books I've read. Only recently have I discovered that there are groups to join and socialising to be done!

My brother recommended GR to me back in 2007 but its only been this year that I ventured into the groups section. Joining the UK Book Club group has totally changed the way I use the site!

message 44: by A.L. (last edited Mar 17, 2013 03:05AM) (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 257 comments Socialising, finding lovely new books to read and chatting about them. If I am honest to also promote my own book. I think GR was recommended by someone on the KDP site.

It is a good site, I am here every day. I have discovered lots of reads I might not otherwise have picked up and as an author it has been quite supportive:)

message 45: by Jonny (new)

Jonny Gibbings (jonnygibbings) | 2 comments To see what authors in the same genre as me are reading.

Yes, it is a good way of finding books you might not otherwise have read.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (mrsdudds) | 2 comments If remember right discovered Goodreads through Facebook app first, joined to discover more books that I might not necessarily have looked at.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

I joined after it was recommended to me. I love it on here as I have read a lot of books I would not have even considered reading.

message 49: by Diane (new)

Diane | 2 comments I found Goodreads by accident when I was looking for some new books to read. I find it really helpful to read reviews by other readers before I decide to start a new book.

I've also recommended the site to family and friends.

message 50: by Cecily (new)

Cecily | 21 comments I read an article in The Guardian (newspaper) in 2008 that mentioned GR and two or three other, slightly similar sites. I had been keeping a reading diary for a year or so, looked round the sites, and GR seemed to have the best content and features.

I added the books from my reading diary, then used GR to record everything I read after that. The knowledge that I would write a review meant I paid more attention, thought more deeply and had far more enjoyment from my reading.

As I engaged in debate on reviews (other people's and my own), those benefits multiplied, and again, as I joined some groups.

I love it here!
