Sarah | 1 comments Hi All. This is Sarah! :)

I just joined this group. I haven't read any biographies/memoirs before and currently I am searching for a good one.

What is your favorite biography/memior book that you would recommend for me to read?

Thank you!

Melissa Harris Hi Sarah ~ welcome!

Are you a Rob Lowe fan? I read about 18 biography/memoirs last year and his was my favorite.

Linda (lindawis) | 3 comments I recommend The Glass Castle. Also anything by Patricia Hampl. I love memoirs by women who are not so famous but have a great story to tell.

If you'd like to take a look at my book, Off Kilter,I'd love to know your comments.;-)

Dale Stanten | 2 comments Take a look at my memoir, "The Hooker's Daughter"
A recent reviewer of Goodreads wrote:
"Won this book on the giveaway and have truly enjoyed reading it. It is written in a very easy, matter of fact kind of way, and easy to follow. Parts of it are funny, parts are depressing, but it feels very true and wholeheartedly written. I would recommend it."

If you read my memoir, please send me your comments. Thank you

My narrative non-fiction/memoir, Unspoken Abandonment, is an incredible read! If you're interested, I am having a free Kindle promotion from March 7th through 9th. The Kindle version will be absolutely free on Amazon during those dates :) Check it out!

Katherine | 8 comments Hi, Sarah,

If by chance you grew up in a dysfunctional family, you might enjoy my memoir The Box of Daughter, which is the story of my journey of healing after growing up in an extremely dysfunctional family. Here's an excerpt from a review by a Goodreads reviewer:

"This is a very compelling and honest account of the author's growing self-awareness and ascent from a lifetime of abuse."

I would enjoy hearing your comments if you decide to read the book. Many thanks!

Kelleigh | 2 comments If you're into psychology, read Prozac Nation

If you're into writing, read
On Writing

If you're into Atheism, read Breaking Up With God: A Love Story

I hope this helps!

Katherine | 8 comments The memoir that affected me the most as a reader is Without a Map by Meredith Hall. Her story took me to some very deep places within myself, down to the nub, so to speak -- and then gently led me back out into life again. I recommend it highly, especially for writers.

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) I tend to like contemporary biographies like And Furthermore about Judi Dench, Bossypants by Tina Fey, and Tom and Jack: The Intertwined Lives of Thomas Hart Benton and Jackson Pollock.

But I also like historical bios like Victoria and Albert and currently reading Martha Washington: An American Life.

message 14: by Chris (new)

Chris | 1 comments For really moving, intelligent and well written autobiography, two of the best are maya Angelou "i know why the caged bird sings" and primo Levi "if this is a man". It's so powerful to read about painful historical events/ struggles by the people who lived through them. I'm not a fan of celebrity self-glorifying autobiographies...

message 15: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) If you have any interest in recent American history, politics or journalism, read either Ben Bradlee's autobiography A Good Life: Newspapering and Other Adventures or Katharine Graham's Personal History. Both fascinating. If you like triumph over adversity stories and/or horses, read Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit: An American Legend.

If you like theater at all, or literary memoirs, read
Underfoot in Show Business and/or 84, Charing Cross Road.

If you like Hollywood literary memoirs, read A Girl Like I.

I'm sure I'll think of others.....

Pat | 1 comments If you're an Abe Lincoln fan, read A Team of Rivals. It's about how he chose all of his rivals to be in his cabinet. A gutsy move that paid off
