Can anybody offer any clues as to how to get my goodreads widget working on my facebook page?

I've set it up, but it says 'this tab has not been set up'. I have no idea what I'm doing, despite going over and over the instructions on goodreads.

Anyone?

Georgina.

Barbara Tarn (barbaragtarn) I tried to set that up, following the instructions on the author page, but gave up. So I just added the Author Widget on my blog. Lame, I know...

Kayleigh {K-Books} (kayley_12) do you mean so that when you add a book it'll come up __ added __ on Goodreads?
If so you don't need to put a widget up you just need to link your FB account to Goodreads on your profile.

If not, I have no clue sorry LOL

It's the Facebook Fan Page Wall Tab, that I'm trying to set up--sorry, confused everyone with the reference to the widget thing.

So much to learn:)

Barbara Tarn (barbaragtarn) No, you were clear (at least to me), but like I said, I gave up trying to add it... I had enough trouble setting Networked Blogs to my blog! I'm starting to hate Facebook (and the friends who chose the "New Timeline" look, yuck!)! :-D

I just set up Networked blogs, bl**dy thing used my facebook profile to link to, instead of my page. Now I have to go back over my private profile and make sure all the settings are set to friend (don't really want people reading about my friends or my children).

Another thing about facebook that drives me batty--no preview button for posts. And I'm always getting confused and I forget to 'switch identity' from my page to my profile and back again.

I think I'll just delete the goodreads thingy (that's half set up) from my page for now. I don't like the timeline look either.

I work on a 'lets see what this button does' principle. I've had some interesting results. :)

Now I'm having trouble with my RSS Feed from my website blog to goodreads! It inserts all sorts of weird formatting and it's doubled up my posts.

Anybody know what I've done wrong? Help...

message 12: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Tarn (barbaragtarn) did you change anything on GR (for your blog RSS feed, I mean)? If you've played with Facebook, it shouldn't have affected GR... It looks pretty normal to me (BTW great art on the latest post! ;-P)
For Networked Blogs, somewhere you can make the author anonymous (which is what I did) and add the feed to your Author page (which is what I did, although now I also send directly to my personal profile through Wordpress). I can study it again and be more specific if you have a WP blog, otherwise I'm at loss... sorry! :-)

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

RSS feed's done it again! Blog has strange formatting and the re-feed has wiped out any likes (including yours, Barbara and J.A's. I liked those likes. Ah the joys of struggling with computers!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Latest update on my blog drama. This morning I had to delete my entire goodreads blog and start afresh with syncing it to my external blog! The formatting is still strange, but at least there aren't any double-ups anymore. But I've lost earlier posts. Oh well.

message 16: by Justin (new)

Justin (justinbienvenue) This is probably one of those things that you can download it on FB, or your phone but in the long run your better off going online becuase I noticed with GR on my phone theres alot I cant do, thats why I do most my GR stuff like comments here online, its better to use FB or phone to check, post books and what not.

My phone's too primitive, even texting is difficult.

Georgina, I would really like to have this, too, and all I got was Goodreads added to my Facebook Page as a listing, not a widget at all :-( Is the situation I have on the Webbiegrrl Fan Page what you wanted? If so I can try to help you but I thought you wanted the widget on there. I've seen the GR Widget on FB Pages and I would love to figure it out!

Barb, bad news for us (I hate the memory-hogging Timeline profile too!! It freezes my web browser since I don't have tens of Gigs of RAM) The Timeline is going to be the DEFAULT soon. Check out this article in Mashable:

Ready or Not You're Getting Facebook Timeline

My Tuesday Tip on the Webbiegrrl Blog this coming week will be on various Facebook issues (such as the IPO expected to come this week!) including Timeline. If there's anyway out of it or around it (which Mashable clearly and flatly says No. The Wall is gone.) I'll find it and report how to get it. I suspect we're getting Timeline or getting cut off of Facebook ;-(

BTW, Georgina, the easiest way to refer to what you're doing with Networked Blogs is to say "I've syndicated my blog onto Facebook using Networked Blogs." I've actually syndicated my blog onto both Facebook and Twitter because I find it useful to have the shortened "nblo" link on my Twitterstream for RT'ing purposes.

I think so to the listing. I've seen the widgets too, but the listing would be fine.

Will the timelines take over facebook pages as well as profiles? (Ahh, more stuffing around on the computer, pressing buttons and hoping for the best).

"I've syndicated my blog onto Facebook using Networked Blogs." Much easier to read than networkedblogged my blog, which should be included as a tongue twister.

Thanks, :) Georgina.

Discussion about the feed managed to weave itself into this thread:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/7...

And now there is a 'Ask A Librarian' thread here (thanks Cambria!): http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/7...

I've checked my books, all fine, but I wonder how many other GR authors are still unaware of this change? The librarians are busy with rescue operation though.

:) Georgina.

message 25: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Yoffa (webbiegrrlwriter) | 501 comments Georgina can you summarize what was "woven into" the "Burned out" thread since it's quite long and I can't figure out from context what you mean by "feed" let alone "trouble with the feed" - what feed? of what content from what site onto what other site? Your remarks are so abundant in vague references, the have no meaning/frame of reference anymore.

I've checked my books, all fine, but I wonder how many other GR authors are still unaware of this change? The librarians are busy with rescue operation though.

Since you're making this "sky is falling" kind of reference to "rescue operations" it'd be kind of nice to know what you think needs rescuing by Goodreas librarians. Please explain in explicit terms if you can (without referencing long side threads where comments might be woven in as a tangential discussion)?

And from your reply I also have no clue if you do or do not want help with your Facebook Page. Yes or no? Have you maybe resolved the issue yourself by now?

O.K Goodreads is losing its feed for the book listings from amazon. Books with only an amazon edition may be 'lost'. Each author should check their own books and make sure there is another edition listed i.e barnes and noble or smashwords.

And yes to the help with my facebook page, please.

:) Georgina.

Barbara wrote: "did you change anything on GR (for your blog RSS feed, I mean)? If you've played with Facebook, it shouldn't have affected GR... It looks pretty normal to me (BTW great art on the latest post! ;-P)..."

And yes, I realised that I had stuffed up the RSS Feed from my blog into my GR blog. I edited the GR blog, trying to remove the 's that somehow showed up underneath the images. That caused the RSS Feed to re-feed the blog!

It all works now (I'm stuck with the strange
s though), although it seems to take a day for my external blog to show up on GR. Does this happen to you too ? (the delay in your blog post showing?)

I know my terminology isn't right, so my questions may all seem a little vague. Remember I'm new to all this. Last year I still thought LOL was a girl's name abbreviated. :) Georgina.

And alas, I have JUST today finally gotten time to come back to Goodreads for two minutes. Sorry to say I'm so backed up I haven't had time to look at writing up instructions on this for you, Georgina. It's really not hard, though. IIRC (If I Recall Correctly -grin-) when I did it, I just used the instructions on Facebook as opposed to on Goodreads. Does that make sense?

I'll try to get time to write up simple-level instructions as soon as I can - I promise you, Georgina, you are NOT the only one who would like to read them! LOTS of people have trouble getting things to work or figuring out how to add stuff to their Facebook Page.

Just for info, what's the link to your Facebook page? Do you have a vanity URL yet? (e.g., mine is http://www.facebook.com/webbiegrrlwriter) This is for your Page not your personal profile; the one you "like" not the one you "send friend request" right?

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Yoffa (webbiegrrlwriter) | 501 comments Georgina, interesting development. I did a really quick search here on Goodreads, thinking, They must have instructions here and I found 3 links.

1) Step-by-step instructions on how to install and setup the Goodreads app on Facebook and add it as a tab to your Facebook Fan Page: Answer 1

2) The same question as #1 but with the answer double-spaced and the notation of it being unavailable added at the top: Answer 2 (basically negates answer #1)

3) Negative answer to the question of adding Goodreads to your personal profile (not a page): Answer 3 Note this answer pretty much indicates that in another month, once Facebook finishes forcing EVERYONE onto the Timeline setup (waaahhh) we'll be able to REinstall the Goodreads app and have it work on personal profiles, too. It doesn't say that but intimates it.

So basically, Georgina, I'm thinking your problem is actually one of timing! As in I think if you had tried this back in September or were waiting another month or two, it'd be a non-issue but you just got burned by bad timing. Make sense?
