I love this strange and tentative relationship that the Count and Mercedes have.
"We are friends, are we not?" she said. "Well, now, Madame," said the Count. "Your friend? I should not pretend to that. But, in any case, I am your most respectful servant."
The countess left with an inexpressible weight on her heart...

Chapters 74 and 75 are amazing. I think grandpa Noirtier is my favorite character in the story. Poor M. de Villefort.
"Villefort opened the door and fled, for he had just had an impulse to stifle the last dregs of life still remaining in the old man's fearsome heart."

Yes! Isn't he fantastic? I can just imagine the intensity of his eyes and expressions. What a force to be reckoned with, even almost completely paralyzed!
And what a story full of ghosts that last chapter was. Just finished the chapter where Villefort confesses to Mme Danglars that he lost the baby. (What?! Now you tell me...)
Obviously it makes for a better story this way, but why didn't he tell her sooner?

Would you want to tell your married lover that you "lost" the baby?
Like an episode from The Saint (or the Pink Panther even!), I love Villefort's visit to the Abbe' and to Wilmore. bwa-hahaha! Can't get away with that kind of thing when you have electric lighting, can you?

Speaking of being unobservant, is it really possible that Mercedes does not recognize her Edmond?

I don't think that even at this early stage in the game that he fooled her.
But she knows that he knows that she knows...
they are calling each other Madame and Monsieur! I would have thrown myself at him wanting to know what happened!
ETA: Ha!! Noirtier has just foiled the engagement. Brilliant chapter.

I love Noirtier! Have I mentioned that before?
And, I think Mercedes knows that Edmond will seek revenge, that's why she tries to get him to eat at her house, and encourages Albert to befriend him, and to be careful of him. What a shock it must have been for her, and she kept her cool!

Chapter 76 ends as the Count and Albert leave the Danglars' house after music and tea.....
