This thread WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS. Please limit the discussion to content from chapters 47 thru 53. No need to mark spoilers, but please don't discuss events beyond chapter 53.

Chapter 46 ends with the count and Haydee leaving the opera just before the 4th act.

Our patient Orientalist Count, setting up the players who will unwittingly aid him in completing his revenge.

And, two more connections were revealed in this section. I look forward to hearing Haydee's story.

Sounds good! I love the way the Count just tells people, "Ali's my slave. I wouldn't let him go, I'd kill him." He tells people Haydee is his slave or his ward, depending on the audience. Quite the casual, self-assured man.

Kim (kimmr) | 931 comments This the section, I think, when the likelihood of unintended consquences - which has been there from the start of the revenge plan - starts to become clearer. While the Count thinks he is totally in control, there are a few things he doesn't know about.

He doesn't know how harming an enemy might also be hurting a friend. He certainly doesn't know much more about Valentine than the fact that her last name is de Villefort.

I am starting to imagine a "potential" parallel between this book and Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff's revenge was aimed at two generations, both his enemies and their children. I hope both stories have a similar end. But, in this case I am rooting for the Count to be redeemed, too! We shall see.

Starting this section now. I remember only a little bit of Haydee's story.

I love the part here with grandpapa Noirtier and Valentine. Brilliant storytelling.

He's my favorite character in the book!

I think mine too, and Valentine wins the prize for best female character.

There just aren't many decent women to pick from, are there? I am partial to Haydee, too, especially in the later chapters of the book.

Grandpa Noirtier rocks!

He was a tough old bird! Even paralyzed, his son feared him!

I just loved his strength of will and how Dumas brought him to life.
