Michelle I had a similar experience with Bridges of Madison County. I didn't love either the book or movie, they were okay. But I saw the movie first and then tried to read the book. I found the book kinda boring and couldn't read it.

Atishay | 1451 comments Green Mile was an awesome adaptation. Tom Hanks was simply incredible.

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Hey Jessica,
I agree it has to be a "shorter" book - to be a good movie - the Novella that was turned into "The Shawshank Redemption" I thought was very well done. I also agree with Princess Bride -t hat was great.

Jane (jane_jones) | 51 comments I've seen good and I've seen bad. I always read teh book before seeing the movie.

Ofmatt....I too love Viggo Mortensen but unfortunately that will not be enough to get me to The Road - I really did not like that book - probably at the top of my books I dislike the most.

Sarenna (djsthree) | 63 comments Robin, I believe that Inkspell is the second in the Inkheart trillogy. I have Inkdeath waiting for me once I finish In Cold Blood.

message 56: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo | 338 comments Whoops! Mistyped that one. Inkheart is the first in the series and the one that they are making the movie adaptation.

I loved the Green Mile movie. Haven't read the book yet.

message 57: by d4 (new)

d4 I am sad. I loved The Road--easily one of my all-time favorites. It stuck with me, struck some kind of fear in me, because it even gave me nightmares.

message 58: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments I haven't read the Road but anyway, I'd love to watch the movie, just because Viggo is a powerhouse performer.

message 59: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Wow - in Cold Blood - that is a blast fromt he past - Wasn't that Capote's first?

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Heather: Sorry to mislead.....The original short story by Stephen King was called "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" it was one of 4 novellas in "Different Seasons" -- The only movie is the one with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman (whom I love).

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Asitay,
I too loved the Green Mile Apdaptaion - Tom Hanks did a great job - so did the little character actor who had the mouse, and of course the man who played Coffey (Like the drink but not spelled the same way)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I liked both book and movie from the following ones: The horse whisperer, LOTR and PS I love you.

I would love to read The lake house movie with keanu reeves and sandra bullock!!! I loved it but don't even know about a book...

message 64: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Same here Jeane! I loved the movie!

message 65: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments Gernerally speaking, I do like film adaptations. Offhand I can't name any specific ones - you know what they say about getting older and memory. LOL. But I did like all of the YV movies made from Danielle Steel's books.

message 66: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments does anybody know about a book for the lake house???

message 67: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments Jeane, wasn't that a book written by John Griwham or James Patterson? I read it and I can picture the cover in my mind, but can't remember for sure who wrote it.

message 68: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments Meant to say John Grisham

message 69: by Apokripos (new)

Apokripos (apokalypse) I like to see the book Pillars of the Earth done into a movie. Though it's so ambitious a project to be done. Still hoping and please do keep those break-neck twists for eager fans.

message 70: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Yeah, I agree Jzhunagev. It'd make into a lovely medieval movie if made properly.

message 71: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Jo, james patterson has a book with the same name but it isn't that one, unfortunately

message 72: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Yeah, I checked out Lake House on GR. I couldn't find one. Even on IMDB, the movie doesn't reveal the name of the author. I guess it wasn't based on a novel maybe. :(

message 73: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Fulkerson (desertwriter) | 18 comments
Jeane: Thanks for correcting me. Just thought it might be the one.

message 74: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I wish someone would remake Persuasion again. I've seen a couple of adaptations and they left much to be desired - especially the newest version. :P

message 75: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I just read somewhere once after a big search that it was written by a Chinese or Japanese author or something, but every time I wanted to look up further about the book, the computer crashed! so it is even worse knowing that there might be a book!!!!

message 76: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Jeane, are you by any chance referring to Eun-Jeong Kim ? He's one of the writers of Lake House, the movie. I checked him out on GR, there's no book by that name written by him. So, either he didn't write a book or its absent on GR.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0453442/

message 77: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments It might be Atishay....I did found website going to someone who wrote the book...but didn't get far. Maybe it is him. But I think it hasn't been written in english, the book.

message 78: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Yeah, that maybe explains why it isn't so popular.

message 79: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments It seems nobody ever heard about it!

message 80: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Everyone has heard of the movie though!

message 81: by d4 (new)

d4 I know of the movie, but then again, I worked at a movie rental store when it came out on DVD. I never got around to watching it, but it was very popular with the customers. Perhaps that is why I never got around to renting it--the movie preferences of the locals has been highly questionable. (Larry the Cable Guy is very popular around here, if that is any indication.)

message 82: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I loved the movie and saw it already three times. Whenever someone would ask me if i want to watch it I would say yes!!!!!! I think it would be wonderful to read the story too.....

message 83: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Don't want to learn Chinese, hearing it makes me go crazy. japanese maybe but not for now...there are too many other languages I want to learn first! can't they just translate it? They constantly translate books now. so translate that one too!!!!!

message 84: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Jeane, I've heard Japanese is a very tough language. A friend of mine who went there told me that even many Japanese people don't know all the characters and letters in their script. English has 26 right? They have thousands.

message 85: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I know, maybe when I am on pension I can try????? Before I move on to another language I should fill the hole and learn the borring German.

message 86: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Hmm.. I've heard German is a bit too 'direct' and a little harsh. It's not considered a soft language, if you know what I mean. Still, some great literature does exist in German.

message 87: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Atishay, it is true. I understans a lot of it becuase my mother tongue is Flemish/Dutch but German sounds like evrything is broken up in hard parts, I just feel like I need to fill up that hole!

message 88: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Best of Luck with it!

message 89: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments One day, probably when i have to know it for a job or something because for now I started three times and stopped because it was too boring.

message 90: by Atishay (new)

message 91: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo | 338 comments Have either of you ever listened to that song by Tool that sounds like a Hitler rally? One of my friends who took German in school says it is really a dramatic recitation of a recipe for pound cake or somesuch. It is a pretty harsh language when reciting a recipe sounds like you want to take over the world!

message 92: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Lolz
I haven't heard of it, do you remember the name of the song ?

message 93: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Haven't heard of it either.

message 94: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo | 338 comments Had to go look it up, but it is "Die Eier Von Satan" from the album Aenima.

message 95: by Atishay (new)

Atishay | 1451 comments Thanks, I'll see if i can get it.

message 96: by Yuliya (new)

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments I noticed (at least for my point of view) what the best movie adaptations made on classic books. I really enjoy movie - "Emma", "Sense and Sensibility". I not really like J Austin books, and watching movies give me just better attitude to this writer.
S. Maugham is one of my favorite authors, and movies based on his books – “Theatre”, “Painted Vail” – not disappointed me. I even think “Painted Vail” is really below graded movie, it deserves much more, actors play is something unbelievable good!
Adaptation of Flober “Madam Bovary” is very good ever!
“Jane Eyre” is not bad at all on the screen too.
“Secret Garden” is nice and beautiful story, but “Little Princess” was completely changed at the end and even my 9y old daughter likes end of the movie even best then in the book, I don’t think its right!
But still mostly classic books have better adaptations then modern books.
I don’t like adaptation of “Water for elephants”, the cast is wrong for me. I watch a lot of movie, but somehow am blank right now to remember adaptation of modern books! Help me! Let’s discuss what is good and what is not! Right now looks like movie are made after books just when letters from print still wet!

It's interesting discussion about movie adaptations and I want to open it is a new discussion and late I sow it was open and just forgotten from 2008... Let's renew this in new 2012 year!

message 97: by Kym (new)

Kym Grosso (kgrosso1) | 7 comments Yes and no. It seems like the movie is never as good as the book. But I loved the Harry Potter movies. And then True Blood - as series not a movie - I think is a great adaptation of Charlene Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books.

message 98: by Michael (new)

Michael (book_nerd1991) I only like to see them if they are good. Some good film adaptions are About a boy, Twelve and Holes. On the other hand, I seen some horrible film adaptions: Disappearing Acts, and the Prince of Tides.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments It's a mixed bag. Some books are written so that they can translate to film very well, and others aren't. Others have "oopsies" in cast or direction, etc.

Some great films have been book adaptations, and some real turkeys.

To be frank, I think there's a certain type of book that makes a better film. The Godfather comes to mind.

message 100: by Yuliya (new)

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 1685 comments I always like to see the book adaptations - no matter good they are or bad. Mostly books are better, but classic adaptation mostly very good
