I checked online and it turns out my local library does have an ebook lending program. I love the idea of being able to borrow books whenever I want without having to make a special trip anywhere.

I have a date :D for the first time in aaaages I have a date! Unfortunately he works some weekends so it's not until 5th May, but that's cool, I'll have just been paid so we can go do some fun stuff around London :D
Sorry but I'm a tad happy today - there's no controlling my bounciness now!!

On the library topic, when I was seven or something, our library said I had a bunch of fines that didn't really exist. They thought I'd lost some books, which I paid for, and then never removed the fine. So it was there, like fifty bucks, until I started volunteering there a few months ago and my supervisor was an angel and removed them for me! So I used to go the library ALL the time, and then I had the fines that banned me from getting books there--so I had to buy all my books. Now it's like an addiction--I like knowing I own the books I've read, good and bad! Whenever I walk into my room, it's like a pathway of the things I've read and where I've been. <3
I'm sure I drive my kids crazy with the, "We can get that at the library" comment in the bookstore. I understand their frustration because I let them buy some books, but not others. I usually buy books as a reward or let them spend their own money as they see fit, but when it's MY money, I want to buy books that I think they'll love a lifetime. But one never can tell, I suppose.

(that's mine and my husband's dream...to have one of those exceptional libraries in our home with the sliding ladder..and to stock it with books, lots and lots of beautiful books! :) *sigh...someday! :) *for now, I just pretend that the library is an extension of my home:)

has anyone read the Scrapbook of Frankie Pratt? it seems interesting i just requested it for my library

Go to your FB - click on the down arrow next to where it says 'Home' (top right crnr) and then on the menu on the left it says apps - you can sort it out from there :D

Sometimes my library book requests get more out of hand than my book buying! I request a bunch of books since there's a waiting list and before I know it 10 books come in all at once... :)
Jessica wrote: "Sometimes my library book requests get more out of hand than my book buying! I'm so afraid that I'll be left hanging like I was with the Twilight series..it took me like 3 days to get New Moon and I was DYING! So...of course, now to correct that issue...I order them all at once...I guess my brain can't quite compute that there is no way I can read 4 700pg books in four weeks! LOL~ I'm glad someone else does this, it makes me see a bit, just a bit...less crazy! When we started this challenge...I went through and put everything I didn't actually own on hold...yup, all 12 came in at once! Needless to say, they've gone back...and they will be requested when I actually need them! :)
April wrote: "Jessica wrote: "Sometimes my library book requests get more out of hand than my book buying! I request a bunch of books since there's a waiting list and before I know it 10 books come in all at onc..."I get in this predicament from time to time. I like to read some books audio-style and I never (or hardly ever) buy audio-books. I am trying to read the entire Agatha Christie published works and so many are available as audio-books, but they're hard to get, so I'll order a few at a time. Of course, they all come in at the same time.
April, that is EXACTLY what I want! I also want my kids to be able to read all the books that I've read, which might not be available at the library by the time they're there! (And we're converting my brother's old bedroom in a family library, hahaha.) The other pet peeve I have when I borrow books is that I've read it already, so there's no urgency to buy it. When I buy a book, I especially want to read it right away for my blog; and if I've already read it for the blog, there's no reason for me to have it. Or like when I read the Pendragon series, I borrowed all of them except for the last three from a friend when I was thirteen. And I'm STILL missing two of them! And now there are new covers for them and I can't find the originals! I can't even reread the series yet, and that makes me terrible sad! :[
On an entirely separate note, since this is the "general" area, my parents and I went to the Coldplay concert last night...I seriously don't think anything could have been more glorious! <3
When my nephew was a little tyke his teacher complained that he wouldn't remain focused on tasks on the blackboard. He loved books and stories, but would tire from reading.
Eventually,a smarter teacher asked his parents to have his eyes checked. That was the problem! He now loves to read and read and read.

I so understand the whole library thing, I am very much that way. I've always gone to the library since I had an awesome bookworm mom, and I still get most of my books from there. I buy a book if I really love it, or when the number of times I've reread it can't be counted on my fingers anymore. When I was a kid, we would always go to the bookstore after grades were out, and if we had good grades we got to pick out a book. Besides that, we made lists of books to get at the library. I didn't mind not buying tons of books too much as a kid, though it would be a little annoying when one of my friends always got the latest book in the series we were reading the week it came out and I was number fifty on the waiting list. But at least I was always surrounded with books, and we still have very full bookshelves in our home full of our favorites. My mother was very into making sure the books were worthy of shelf space, since there are so many wonderful books out there. We generally have close to maxed out library accounts (I've gotten a little better about requesting too many books) and I have often had to return books before reading them because too many came in at once. Besides that, my biggest frustration with the library is when it takes forever to get a book when it's been out a while. Like with "A Game Of Thrones". It's been out quite a while, but because of the new show, people are requesting the book like mad. I'm currently 144 on the list. It seems like I have the bad luck to hear about an awesome book when a show or movie is released that I don't hear about but everyone else does.
I like scary movies. Put Woman in Black on the list. I wanna see Cabin in the Woods. I heard it was really good, which is surprising considering the current state of horror movies.

Alright! It's May...MAY! and...I'm offically behind:) Hoping to wrap up the three books I'm in the middle of...but that doesn't seem likely to happen in the immediate future with my schuedle:) So....I'm just gonna be ok with being behind. It usually drives me crazy, but I'm not gonna let it, becuase this is for fun! RiGHt?~? I'm reading with all of you and enjoying sifting through your comments on what you've read, enjoyed, disliked and just general blablabla about books! Love it!:) So...The blood pressure is going to go back down, and I'm not going to frett that I'm not even half way done with Paradise Lost, that I'm cruising through Emma, but still not close to finishing...and InkSpell...well, if I just go for an hour drive, I can finish that up on the cd player (what's 10 bucks in gas to get a book finished!?!:) LOL!!! So I may or may not in MAY get to the challange of the dustiest book...Oh, I'll get to it, but maybe not this month! :) Ahhh...thanks! I feel better! *and no comments from those of you who are 15 books ahead! :) giggle giggle:) *
I am 4 books behind according to my challenge widget! I'm not even half way done with Paradise Lost either! I guess I will be participating in the May challenge by default because Paradise Lost is my dustiest book :)
So, besides the mini challenge of reading your dustiest book, I don't have any events planned for May. Has there been enough for you guys to do around here? Or is there too much? What other things would you like to see in this group? Just looking for some general feedback :)

I'm already five books behind in my reading goal. I knew 50 was a very high goal when I started though, so I'm not fretting about it too much. As long as I read more this year than I did last I'll be happy. The thing that bugs me is I know I'd get more reading done if the break room at my job wasn't so noisy. Usually I'm very good at tuning out stuff, but lately the tv in there has been driving me crazy. I'll turn it off if I'm lucky enough to be alone but, without fail, someone will walk in 5 minutes later and click on the tv. It's always something annoying like Two and a Half Men or The View. But it's not like I can tell people to sit there in silence so I can read. I wish we had a separate quite space, but I'm more likely to find a cure for cancer than convince them to do something like that. Jessica - I think we have a good amount of stuff to do. There's not necessarily a lot of structured events, but I think we have an enthusiastic community and I almost always find something to talk about. And if not it's usually because there's a lot of talk about literary fiction whereas I read more genre fiction. It makes sense though that most of the discussion would be geared towards classics and literary stuff though, since those seem to be the books most people put off and allow to become dusty. I'm not really sure what other kinds of events you could do since nearly everyone in this community is reading something different.
Jessica, I really enjoy what you've done with the group. I don't feel pressured to participate in all of the challenges or buddy-reads, but I know that they are there and I can pick and choose the things in which I want to participate. Keep up the good work!
I usually dont participate in reading groups cos I cant be brought to reading at those groups' pace... I have my own pace, and so far it worked and brought me enough joy of reading :)
I think it is a great group, too, and it is really encouraging me to make a dent in my huge backlog of dusty books! When I can tick off another entry in my challenge, I really feel a sense of pride in accomplishment.
So far I've read 8 of my dusty books & I'm quite happy to continue reading them... dropping in on the group reads or challenges when I can :)
This isn't a pushy group that insists you take part in everything - which is good beacuse at the moment I would fail tremendously, I blame the big books drawing me in & not letting me go ;P

I love this group! There's something for everyone...and, like Hayley said...it's not pushy! I too would fail, if I had to be 'IN' everything:) I think you're doing a wonderful job, Jessica. You make it fun, there's plenty of challenges to participate in if we choose...and so many fun people to chat with...about books and everything else!
Since we were talking about Poe in the other group...I saw The Raven! *swoon* I'm officially on a Poe-fangirl streak. I have found myself unable to take off the necklace with his face on it my friend gave me. It was marvelous, in case you're wondering if you should go see it! (:
Congratulations Chimney :D
Thalia - I'm jealous but glad to hear you enjoyed it :) I was meant to go see The Avengers over the wkend but my friend backed out so I may go see it next weekend instead... with or without the friend ;P

Haven't had a chance to see The Avengers yet. :/ (But to be honest, I'd rather see The Raven again if I had my pick!) But I think that's my Poe fangirl winning out over my Marvel fangirl. (:
I don't think The Raven's out here yet - I know we got The Avengers before the US but that rarely seems to happen with the big films. Nope, I've decided I NEED to see the film before I go on holiday at the end of the month!
Oh really? Well, you should see it as soon as it comes out! Good luck with getting to the Avengers! I've heard it's REALLY great; which makes me super happy, since I ended up being kind of disappointed with Thor.
Congrats Chimney!!!I didn't even know they were making "The Raven" a movie..hmmm...have to check that out! AS far as Avengers...I'll watchi it cause IronMan is in it...but, I'm no Marvel gal! :) But! I am looking forward to the new GI Joe coming out at the end of next month! (and of course, as lame as I am!...I'll be awaiting the release of the second Breaking Dawn installment...already got a girl date planned for November! :) Probably all I'll see at the theaters this year (unless a really good kids movie makes it's way to the big screen and I'll take the kids this summer! :)

Speaking of good kids movies, "Brave" will be out June 22nd. I'm really looking forward to that one. It's Pixar, so I can't lose.
Hmmm...never heard of it! We love Pixar...maybe we'll have a family "MOVIE' to look forward to afterall! :) Thanks!EDIT: Yes! We did see the trailer for this and thought it looked really good! (I was even teasing my husband a bit in saying...hey! A kids viking movie..maybe his book will sell more with the release of a viking movie! :)
Chimney wrote: "I graduated from college! (*happy dance!*)"Congratulations, Chimney!!! Maybe you've mentioned it before, but what was your major? And now are you going to go to grad school or look for a job?
April, The Raven is not based on The Raven. It's set during the last few days of Poe's life and follows him and the Baltimore police and they try to track down a serial killer using Poe's stories as inspiration. And it was AMAZING. (Did I already mention that?) To be honest, I was kind of psyched every time I recognized one of the stories. (: John Cusack was a GREAT Poe, and it was just all around amazing. (: Definitely a good one for fans of Poe and have read a lot of his short stories!

Alright..I had to bring back the general topic because I had no idea where else to post...that I'm on track! Woot woot... I know lots of people have read way more books than I, but I was excited to see that little widget thing-a-ma-jiggy say "you're on track"! Yay!!! That's all:)
Grrrargh - been so busy the past few weeks that I'm starting to fall behind on everything - including the GR site :S
But I'm back and trying to catch up on my reading like a thing possessed!!
I hope everyone is well :D

Right - with Halloween coming up this thread has been resurrected in a zombiefied fashion ;D
Also we've had so many new people join since the last post that I thought it'd be good to get chit-chatting to everyone.
Anyone got costumes, plans etc for Halloween (if you do Halloween)? I've had to put my weekend plans on hold as I got handed 5 A4 pages full of questions that need doing asap - very miffed and think I upset almost boyfriend when I told him that I needed this weekend to get as much done as I could :(
I've also signed up for NaNoWriMo next month, for the first time ever :O Is anyone else doing this or has anyone done this and can help me out with how much chocolate to keep in fridge, how many tea bags to stock up on etc etc? ;)
Ach well, hope you're all well :D

I'm going to a party tomorrow night. I like to put together my own costumes. Last year I was a gypsy, but I don't want to do that again, so I'm going to try a hippy this time!
Ooh, have fun Denise :) I had to cancel my weekend plans - got given 100+ questions for apprenticeship that need answering asap :(
Can we expect pics of the finished costume ;)

I've done NaNoWriMo twice Hayley, and it's not easy. The first time was last november, and I beat the word count but didn't finish my novel, and this June for Camp Nanowrimo where I beat both word count and finished my novel. There is a nanowrimo group on Goodreads, which can be helpful. I would recommend getting a couple of boxes ahead of your favorite teas, you'll need them. As far as chocolate goes, that is up to you. I used reading as one of my rewards this summer, if I made my word count I got to read for an hour. Of course, in November it can be harder if you have classes. Regardless of anything else going on in your life, make sure to take care of your wrists! Many people, myself included, develop carpal tunnel as a result so make sure you do wrist exercises, and if they get sore stop, and put your wrists in icy water for several minutes to prevent further damage. I was really stupid, did it during the paper writing time of the semester my first time, did in my wrists writing for school and Nano, and didn't give it enough time to fully heal before I did nano again in June. Of course you probably already know of that danger, but another warning won't hurt. ;) My wrists are still healing, and while it's worth it to get a shinny new novel you won't want to look at for at least a year, you don't need to hurt yourself if you absolutely don't have to.
Use your first weekend to get as many words as possible. If possible, use any challenge days to get a massive word count. The most words I ever wrote was 11,321 on the 11/11/11 challenge to write 11,111 words. Another way to beef up your word count is to refuse to let your word count have a 0 anywhere in it. I hate zeros so it I had 20,128 words I would write the extra 1000 words to get rid of that zero. Be stubborn.
Have fun at Nanowrimo. I won't be doing it this year, I have enough writing with my senior paper this semester. I already wrote one novel this year, and that is enough with my planning for the next one. So far I've written one novel for each decade I've been alive. :)
Have fun and good luck!

I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, I got a new laptop with a webcam and was playing around with it yesterday, so this is kind of a costume...
I'm thinking about taking part in NaNiWriMo but I don't really have any hopes of completing it. I have just done advanced entry into uni so missing the first two years is taking a toll on my social life and brain, far too much work and not enough fun. I'd still like the motivation to actually get the story that had been in my brain the longest onto a bit of paper finally though.I'm going out for Halloween, going to be dressing up as Marlene Dietrich. Or evil Willow if I don't have the time to source a suit.
He he Denise! Love the web costume!! :)
I got a Captain Sparrow hat from Disneyland and I'm going to wear that for halloween. :) Can I just say that I miss Disneyland? What other place on earth do you get to wear a costume any day of the year? I wore my pirate hat all day and all I got was compliments :)
Also, I can't WAIT for Wreck it, Ralph to come out. It looks so funny.
If you haven't seen the trailer you have to watch it
