@Chimney: I think that's the basic gist of it - models being seen as role-models and not promoting the idea of year round suntan (which is impossible in this country unless it's your natural skin colour or you can afford to winter in sunny places). Now if only they can get them to promise not to drop below a healthy weight for their height/body type ;D

Also, yeah - this group really has exploded, it's great how big it's become :D I remember back when there were only 2 members ;)

Hayley - So true ;) I fondly remember trying to set up my group and you showed up before I was even done LOL

I saw this thread with 50+ posts and I really wanted to read them all. Today was the first chance I got! I can't keep up with you guys.

I was thinking that I could start some more specific threads so I can keep up with you all better. I was going to start ones on video games, movies and tv shows. You are all welcome to start other ones as well :)

Haha, that was fun - it just seemed like exactly what I was already planning to do for this year so was perfect!

Tell me about it - I could hardly come on all of yesterday (can't sneak on when company's holding interviews) and quilting in the evening - catching up now I've got so many posts to read through :D

Unfortunately more interviews today so will hafta do this catch up all over again tonight ;D

I'm jealous! :)

message 109: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 87 comments Darn it, I had to take the dog out and now I forget what I was going to say. I hate it when that happens!

I hope all of you are well and didn't have to suffer any of the horrific tornadoes that went through the midwest yesterday. We're north of it here in Michigan.

I tried to get into scrap-booking, but I couldn't get into it. I would always want something I didn't own and I never have a chance to scrapbook with friends. I think when I'm an empty-nester in another 12 years, I'll do it digitally and forgo the print and stick completely.

I used to cross-stitch a bunch in high school and college, but then I started making my own reeds in graduate school. Now I teach bassoon privately, so I make reeds for my students as well as for myself. It's a living!

Haha!! Party time! That tracker is so positive and encouraging for us ;)

message 112: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) LOL I thought it was fun. I keep logging back in over here just to see it. :P (Well okay, not really, but still!)

The one on the main page still says I'm 3 books behind though. I'm surprised it's only 3 books. I think it will be 4 after Saturday though? Unless I can finish one of the ones I'm reading now... maybe....

message 113: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments For the yearly challenge, I feel like every time I get "on track", the VERY next day I fall behind a book again! Ughghgh, so frustrating!

But I've been doing pretty well on my dusty books, so after I do my Shiver review, I'll be two ahead! (;

message 114: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus | 89 comments I set a fairly realistic goal I think, I hope, alright, we'll see :D... five books done, Malazans ahead, so that should be fifteen and then I will have to find something short to meet the goal LOL

message 115: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 307 comments I'm ahead in this challenge and also the general 2012 challenge. I set modest goals in both, though. Here, I knew I would read more than just dusty books, so I started with only five that I selected, but I've been adding as I go, and am now up to nine (I've read three so far). For the annual one, I wanted to make sure that if I chose to read some really long ones, it wouldn't throw me off track, so I figured a goal of two a month would be reasonable (total 24; I think I've read seven so far).

message 116: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments I feel like I'll fall behind this month...Poe set me back a little, and Shiver took me like, six days to read. Nine days into March and I've only got one. Ok under my belt! My yearly goal is eighty books, originally one hundred until I decided to tone it down a bit.

message 117: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Silmarillion definitely set me back, but I still don't regret the decision to start the year with Tolkien. ;) I just should've started at the start of the year instead of waiting 2 weeks I suppose! LOL

I'm totally not on track with my non-fiction though. :P

message 118: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Speaking of Tolkein, I got my new box set in the mail! Of LotR, that is! Mine was soooo old, and totally falling apart, and Fellowship had the last three pages and the back cover separate to the rest of the book. They lasted twenty years, going through both my brothers and then almost me--but too bad they really can't see the light of day anymore!

So now I have a new one and they're perfect! <3

message 119: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Awesome, Thalia! I have some used paperbacks with covers including shots from the movies. One of these days I'll love a nice set, Hobbit and Silmarillion included!

message 120: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 307 comments I have a lovely LotR, in one volume, leather-look (I don't think it's real leather, but it might be), with gold and colored printing on the spine/cover, slipcased with one of those ribbon bookmarks in it. I love it!

message 121: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Yay! Mine is only about 10 years old, and it's an all in one...it's not a nice "leather" one like Denise's but I love it because it has an incredible appendix that has elvish translations and is like a whole additional story in itself for all the explanations it offers:) along with spectacular maps, timelines and family trees! <3

message 122: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 307 comments I don't think I've ever gotten all the way through the appendices - like you say, it's like reading another whole book! I've always meant to, though.

message 123: by Razmatus (new)

Razmatus | 89 comments Mine is a paperback one-volume, 50th anniversary edition based, beautiful orange cover with an eye... read it, loved it, now it looks neat on my shelf :)

message 124: by [deleted user] (new)

i hate scary movies!

message 125: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 87 comments I set my annual goal for 52 - one book a week - and I'm several books ahead, somehow. I also will have to adjust my goal to reflect the children's books I review after reading with my daughter. They don't count towards my goals, but I want to track when I read certain things with my kids, otherwise I could record them without a date and they wouldn't count. Oh, well.

I'm not currently reading a dusty book. But I think my next book will be. It happens to be a kid's book, The Red Pyramid. I tried reading this last year, I think, and I couldn't stick with it. I loved the Percy Jackson series and my friends loved this one just as well, so I have hopes to get through this time. It's not very dusty, admittedly.

First week of April, I'll have some time to read since my kids will be at Walt Disney World with my parents. Maybe I'll read something really BIG like World Without End or David Copperfield.

message 126: by Ray (last edited Mar 24, 2012 11:45AM) (new)

Ray (tilma) | 8 comments I am saving up the children's books for if I don't reach my target and cheat my way to 53 with the hungry caterpillar, Miffy and where is Wally. Currently I am reading Shakespeare's Coriolanus, which isn't even on my dustlist, although IT should be. In all actuality it IS my dusty shelf, or propping it up at least. I downloaded it on Kindle, because extracting it from the bookcase would cause a definite collapse.

Oh, and I am really not liking it so far. Really, what are these people on about?

message 127: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Ruth, your goals and methods sound very similar to mine. I'm also doing book-a-week and not counting books I read with the kids (which is a lot since we homeschool), but am counting a few YA books here or there IF they are books I *want* to read and not for the kids *and* they are over 400 pages.

Anyway. Just thought I'd shout out since your goals sounded so similar to mine! I'm behind instead of ahead though, but the 18 month old twins keep me on my toes. Plus I've got spring fever pretty badly at the moment! I'll get over it though. LOL

message 128: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Dalynn, like Eragon? (; That one should count!

message 129: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Yep, exactly like Eragon. ROFL

My sister loaned me all 4 of the books in that series, and I got a kick out of the fact that each book is thicker than the previous one. Knowing how young Paolini was when he wrote them, I'm hoping this is indication of his growing ability and not just indicating a push of some sort by the publishers... but we shall see.

Eventually. *sigh*

message 130: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 87 comments I'm going to read a big book during spring break this coming week. I thought I'd read "Storm of Swords" from the Song of Ice & Fire series (Game of Thrones). BTW, if you haven't added these books to your TBR stack, I highly recommend them.

I've had a great time this week - got my friend up from Berlin so yesterday we walked to Rochester to visit the Cathedral & then walk around outside the castle (plus walk around the old high street like proper tourists ;D)

Today I'm taking her to Canterbury but not sure if we'll be visiting the Cathedral as it's a bit expensive - I'm going to try to get my sister's Resident's Card for at least 1 free entry ;D

Tomorrow I'm taking her round my favourite places in London that I think everyone should go to at least once ;D

I'm just so glad the weather's been so gorgeous & will continue to be for the rest of the week :)

I have some majorly dusty books but still keep getting a stack from the library. LOL

message 140: by Denise (new)

Denise (dulcinea3) | 307 comments I grew up going to the library, although I always had a lot of my own books, too. Especially when I was little, I could spend hours and hours in the library! But I guess maybe it was when I went to college and had to buy all the books I studied, I stopped going to the library. I don't even have a library card now. Like you, Chimney, I feel like I have my own library at home, and I love it!

message 141: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 11, 2012 08:21PM) (new)

If everyone acquires a library card and uses the library at least occasionally, the funding will more likely continue in communities where children and adults can make use of them. Many families need to use the computers, get literacy tutoring and cannot afford books.

A lot of libraries are changed from the quiet, solitary environments they used to be. Check them out!
PS. Job seekers and seniors are a large part of society using public computers. I'm just saying...

message 142: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 63 comments I used to buy a lot more books than I do now. The last move, though, contained more weight from my books than furniture! My husband was not impressed. That, and running out of shelf space curtailed my book buying of fiction. Those are easy enough to get at the library. I love libraries. Haven't met one I haven't liked! I have a tiny library in my tiny little town, but they can bring books in from anywhere in the province within a reasonable amount of time. Plus I have library cards to the area colleges and university, and cards for the libraries in towns I used to live. We have a fantastic system that allows me to return books from any library in the province at the one here in town and they ship them back. Like I said, what's not to love about a library? :)

I feel like this book club is a bit like a book-buyers anonymous because we obviously buy lots of books and don't read them, otherwise books would not become "dusty."

I'm reading The Red Pyramid right now. Technically, it could count towards my dusty book challenge, but it's not on the list. At least I haven't read it already!

I LOVE the library! Just to go in there and get lost...ahhh, peace! I always tell my husband, when I grow up I'm gonna be a librarian! :) (and yes, I look at those as books I've already paid for via taxes, and those are my off site shelves! :)

That's exactly what happened to me the last time I moved. Moving several bins filled with books was not fun. I invested in a kindle after that. Of course, the kindle makes it extremely easy to purchase more books whenever, but at least I won't throw out my back lugging them all around.

I've been thinking about trying out the local library. I haven't been to a non-school library since I was about 9. I'm not even sure on where my local library is (relatively new to the town). I really want to start reading the Lord of the Rings books, but I can't justify buying them when I have ten other books laying around in my room.

My local library has a kindle-edition of "The Fellowship of the Ring" available for download, so you may not have to "find" your local library beyond applying for a library card! Once you have your card, depending on the system used by said library, you should be able to borrow e-books and kindle books from your home computer. I have done this LOADS of times... so easy!
