We have no idea what colour they will change into. We keep guessing, but they could end up looking like anything. :)
We think the lighter ones will turn out a light coloured mosaic like Mum. No idea on the others. Going to fun seeing them change their outfits over time. :)

Jane | 3480 comments Has anyone read The Lady in Gold The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt's Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Anne-Marie O'Connor The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt's Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Fascinating--this portrait was stolen by the Nazis and subseequently recovered. It was a very good book, and I love that portrait!

message 4654: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I haven't. I know the Klimt portrait painting though. So famous. I didn't realise the Nazis had stolen that one too.

Ian Mortimer in his books

The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century by Ian Mortimer
The Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England by Ian Mortimer

talks about how much animal protein the merchant and upper classes consumed ( three or four courses at every meal ). No wonder gout was a major problem :)

Terri | 19576 comments Cool. Goodreads Choice Awards are up and running.

For those who love voting on stuff (me) I like to vote.
I get annoyed by the choices a lot of the time, but i still like the voting.

He does mention the aroma of London and other major cities - but he credits it more to sewage disposal problems :)

Me too. Unfortunately I haven't read any. When I went to 'need inspiration?' for write-in votes, I see I only have 5 books published in 2013, 4 of them nonfiction, 2 of those on pre-order, 1 fiction a review copy I didn't love. Drat can't vote.

Both of mine were write-ins, so they won't come close. Oh well... some of these categories I don't even like. Plus I thought many choices were putrid in the categories I do like.

message 4661: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I voted and then went back and changed them already. :)

I remembered a couple good books published this year that weren't on the list so had to change my votes.

Terri | 19576 comments I have written in before (it was a Cornwell) and then realised that it hadn't been released in the US yet...and they work on US release dates.
This was back in the day when I did not realise that they only worked with books released in the US. I quite often forget that this is, despite being open to all internationals, a US site and not an International site.

message 4663: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Has The Lion Rampant been released in the US? I can only find UK publications of it.

message 4664: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I can only find digital books available in the US and I can't find a US release date either.

message 4665: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments I'm going to be bold and write-in, for nonfiction. I'll stand up for lit studies. Medieval/renaissance at that. It's won an award.

message 4666: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments Sure, good for you, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

message 4667: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Actually, now I think of it, I did write in a non fiction once too.
This one: What It is Like to Go to War by Karl Marlantes What It is Like to Go to War

Terri | 19576 comments Dawn wrote: "I can only find digital books available in the US and I can't find a US release date either."

I couldn't find a US release either.
We need an American to check an online bookstore and see whether there is a US publication of The Lion Rampant, or do they all come from the UK.

message 4669: by Marcie (new)

Marcie Kremer (goodreadscommarcie_kremer) Try this: it's HarperCollins, but don't know if it's the UK or not.

message 4670: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Nov 04, 2013 05:33PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Afraid because I am not in the US (I am in Australia) it will always throw up UK results when Americans link to the book. :( So I need someone in the US to see if they have any US editions available to them or do they all ship from the UK.

message 4671: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Checking The Book Depository, it appears there is no US edition. So I guess I can write in a vote for it to the Goodreads Choice Awards. *sigh*

What about The Ill-Made Knight?

message 4672: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Amazon.com has a pre-order price guarantee on The Ill-Made Knight so it's not released in the US yet.

Actually, with this one it actually says it hasn't been released yet on the left.

message 4673: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (last edited Nov 04, 2013 05:54PM) (new)

Terri | 19576 comments None of the books released this year that I have read and enjoyed a lot have been released in the US yet.
Or at all for that matter.

What about Templar's Acre?

or Rome: The Art of War (which I haven't read, but I love the series and would vote) or Stormbird (which I also haven't read, but would vote for becasue there are no books in the options that smack of the historical fiction books we read in here).

message 4674: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Maybe I need to look at my 2012 publications and see if any of those have been released in the US this year.

message 4675: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments of the 2012 ones I am not sure what their US release date was or even if they have one.

Crowbone
Rome: The Eagle of the Twelfth

Hawk Quest...now that one WAS released in the US wasn't it. I remember all the ads on GR Hawk Quest

1356 was released in the US in 2013 wasn't it, but I thought that was a awful book so wouldn't vote for it.

message 4676: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I tried to vote for Hawk Quest and got an ineligible message.
This one:

Books published for the first time in the United States in English between November 26, 2012 and November 16, 2013 are eligible for the 2013 Goodreads Choice Awards. If you think you've received this message in error, please contact a librarian.

message 4677: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Templar's Acre looks like it was released in September in the US.

message 4678: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Though I don't see why Hawk Quest would be ineligible.

message 4679: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I think this is happening a lot. I checked into the Librarians group and there is a thread set up for books such as Hawk Quest, where the US publication date is this year and yet it is saying it is ineligible.

I posted about Hawk Quest and we'll see how we go.

I may end up trying to vote for Templar's Acre. That one I really enjoyed and Hawk Quest I haven't finished, but I enjoyed what I had read and hope to get back to it soon.

message 4680: by Darcy (last edited Nov 04, 2013 06:16PM) (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments According to the book's details it was originally published in January 2012. Probably why it's not eligible. Perhaps a publishing date typo?

message 4681: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) That should be the UK release date. The US one was in April of this year.

message 4682: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments I wonder how GR knows which editions are from the US?

message 4683: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Sweet. Since it starts on Nov 26 2012, my fave hf of the year scrapes in by two days.

message 4684: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Which one, Bryn?

I know it isn't A Bloody Field by Shrewsbury lol. ;)

Terri | 19576 comments Darcy wrote: "According to the book's details it was originally published in January 2012. Probably why it's not eligible. Perhaps a publishing date typo?"

I even remember in April when there were sponsored ads splashed around GR and the GR newsletter for the April release of Hawk Quest in the US.

I wonder how a librarian fixes books like these to make them eligible for the awards.

message 4686: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Oh I saw your vote show up in your updates, Bryn. It was Arauco: A Novel :)

message 4687: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Bloody Field was my last year's love, Terri, aside from her lack of eligibility. :) This year it's Arauco: A Novel.

message 4688: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Oh, was that last year? I had it in my head that we read it in Feb. But yes, the wink smilie was for the extreme ineligibility of it anyway. :D

Terri | 19576 comments Bryn wrote: "Bloody Field was my last year's love, Terri, aside from her lack of eligibility. :) This year it's Arauco: A Novel."

The cover is truly beautiful.

message 4690: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Maybe we did. I have no time sense. It is a gorgeous piece of art for the cover, and done with great care to tally with the contents.

message 4691: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments No. No. You were completely right. It was September last year. I was just muddled up. :)

message 4692: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Tyler Jacobson is the cover artist. I quite like his other work as well. In case anyone is interested: http://www.tylerjacobsonart.com/#port...

message 4693: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments Oh thanks Dawn. I hadn't investigated.

message 4694: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I had not investigated either.

Nice nudes. :]

message 4695: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) I rather liked his Moby Dick stuff. And the nudes are quite nice, aren't they! ;)

message 4698: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I know. *slaps own hand*

message 4699: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments They fixed hawk Quest. I voted for it successfully.

message 4700: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) Their solution to fixing it was to change it's first published date. Which technically makes it the wrong info now?? Seems a bit odd.

I voted for a book in a series that's not being released in the US at all. Just because I didn't like any of the others. :)
