I always get my flu shot. I never get the flu but I rarely get sick in general. I am very grateful for my immune system. It's only ever really let me down once when I got mono in high school and bronchitis on the end of my mono. Fortunately my girls seem to have inherited my immune system.
and
are two of my favorite children's books of all time. All of my girls own their own copies. On a seasonal note, my favorite children's Christmas book is
I admit I don't remember too much about reading anything other than the Asterix the Gaul books and the texts from school. I do remember helping my brothers read:Barbapapa
Histoire de Babar le petit elephant (we eventually got a board game that went with this series)
And these translations.
Bertrand, Le Gros Chien Rouge
Monsieur Chatouille
Later I read older childrens' books, but again they were all French. Even the first author I ever met was a French children's sci-fi writer.

Oh yeah forgot to mention you'll feel like S**** for a few days afterwards........ ;D they DO pass & generally it tends to work against colds as well Ive found
So, what's the bargain if you feel like s*** for days after the shot, which is exactly what happens if you catch the flu?(....except naturally for the satisfaction to say: ha! see? I didn't catch the flu!) :)

It only happens the...... ONCE ;) whereas you can be bothered with flu(s) throughout the winter/wet season & in truth it varies year to year (Jab) & mostly only effected me the first time & was only for 3 days or so.
I see that some companies now pay for their employees to have the flushot each year - less time of work for workforce :)

I think I'd rather take my chances...
Rudolph will be driving the sleigh this year! He is in the kitchen baking a fruit cake, frosted fruit bars and pecan crescents as we speak! For those of you who got the shot, you did good!

Some of us can't unfortunately :)

I got the flu so badly one year I nearly died. Since then I haven't had the flu once. It's now 29 years since I had the flu.
Dawn wrote: "I used to work for a company that did that. But like Alli..."The company I work for does that. The only year I caught the flu was when I decided to try and have my shot. Now I'm pretending to forget to book the shot with the lady who's making the lists...every year.
Simona wrote: "It seems that you got the ultimate solution, Margaret :)"Yeah. DNA mutation is a wonderful thing. :p
Oooo..I have always dreamed to have a X-man (well, woman..) among my friends! (well, I thought someone more like Wolverine, but I wouldn't want to make you feel as a second choice...) :)
Greatchen - the same thing happened to me. Mono in highschool and for about a year I caught everything that came along. I haven't had the flu, strep or anything else since then. Mono was a pain but it sure paid off. Nurses say I'm the healthiest cancer patient they've ever had! :D

Barbar! I had forgoten all about Barbar, how on earth did I forget.
Our company pay for the flu vax, well, it is a medical company so I would hope so. That shot covers the strains of flu that are most common in Brisbane on the given year. It doesn't cover you for all the other strains of flu though and we always have people travelling overseas. Someone brought us an Italian flu earlier in the year, so kind of them to bring back pressies for their co-workers when they go overseas :)
A jus to cover us against all Adriatic strains.... Best get some Ouzo & Slivovitz..... cant be to careful these days :D
um, Grappa. Yes that would have been so much healthier and so much fun. Honestly though, I would not have turned down the Sambucca, Ouzo or Silvovitz. Throw in a nice bottle of Arak and some Finland vodka and we could have ourselves the perfect party. Who is pouring?
Actually, hold my glass until later, must go to work now.

Hahah, that was brilliant!
Deborah wrote: "um, Grappa. Yes that would have been so much healthier and so much fun. Honestly though, I would not have turned down the Sambucca, Ouzo or Silvovitz. Throw in a nice bottle of Arak and some Finlan..."Alas, no shot to prevent a hangover. ;)
I normally get a flu shot - my work covers it and even brings in someone to give to to the employees on site. Since I belong to two high risk groups ( old and diabetic) I get to go the front of the line :)I normally feel miserable for a couple of days after. That said a few yrs ago I missed the shot and did get the flu - It was 10 times worse than the shot, so I haven't missed since:)
My reading has slowed down, I've been doing the Christmas thing - I'm the chief candy maker and baker. The grandkids have been over helping. Hopefully I can get my current read, The Last Valley: Dien Bien Phu and the French Defeat in Vietnam, finished in the next couple of days.

I think it's more of a bargain if you're in a high-risk group where the flu might actually kill you, rather than just make you feel grotty for a few days :)

Ever since I started teaching (and now working as an advisor at a Uni) I've gotten a flu shot - and haven't had the flu in years (knock on wood!!) This year I went to the flu shot clinic held at the University; nursing students were giving the shots under the watchful eyes of supervisors. The young lady who gave me my shot did a great job. And I don't seem to have much reaction to the shots except for a soreness at the site of the shot. But since I work in a petri dish (University) I'm not going without a flu shot.
Ohhh don't blame you Catherine - I hated it when I needed to visit the uni doctors for any reason because the waiting room was permanently full of coughers and sneezers!
Simona wrote: "Deborah wrote: "Someone brought us an Italian flu earlier in the year..."It wasn't me, I swear! :)"
OH YES IT WAS! Lols, panto joke. ;)
Boss just gave me my Christmas gift. A giftcard from a local mall that has an Apple store.... and the giftcard is enough to buy the iPad mini I was already planning on buying myself. :D
I got a gift card too, it wasn't enough to buy an ipad-mini, but it was enough for a big chunk of taxes to be deducted from my pay. I hate that cash-like 'gifts' aren't considered gifts by our government, rather they're seen as 'income'. I hope that isn't the policy in Australia.
Ugh Darcy!! That sucks!! You totally scored Margaret!! :)

I went into a used book store the other day figuring I'd buy myself a nice little cache of cheap books. Not the case. The cheapest one I found was $10! WTH? This is a USED bookstore! All just piled willy-nilly on shelves and tables, ripped, stained, colored on and you want to charge at the lowest ten bucks?? What?? I can go into Barnes & Noble for that price and come out with squeaky clean books! No wonder I was the only customer shopping in the store! It was such a cool place too --- owner had his cats lying around (one kept following me and head butting my leg for attention, so cute) and he had an old 50s record playing on a turn table. I really wanted to purchase something but there was no way... he really needed a $2 and under section!
Darcy wrote: "I got a gift card too, it wasn't enough to buy an ipad-mini, but it was enough for a big chunk of taxes to be deducted from my pay. I hate that cash-like 'gifts' aren't considered gifts by our gove..."Nope. Gift cards are gifts. They do not constitute legal tender in Australia.
Besides, the gift isn't from the company, it's from my boss personally. We exchange presents at Christmas.
The junior accountant gave me a Doctor Who coffee mug and a cute figurine of the Tenth Doctor. :D
Coffee mug and cute Tenth Doctor :Dhttps://www.goodreads.com/photo/user/...
I gave the junior accountant a Fourth Doctor scarf. :D
Oh bugger, bugger, bugger.... have just discovered there is a pop up BBC shop in the city at the moment... selling Doctor Who AND Sherlock merchandise....and I'm going into the city on Monday.*makes mental note to leave all cards at home under lock and key*
Darcy wrote: "I got a gift card too, it wasn't enough to buy an ipad-mini, but it was enough for a big chunk of taxes to be deducted from my pay. I hate that cash-like 'gifts' aren't considered gifts by our gove..."It is the policy in Australia too. My hubby sometimes gets a cash bonus. Not at xmas, but at the end of the financial year in July. He loses a big chunk of that cash to tax. Really sucks.
Allie,It always amazes me what some used book stores ask for their used books. So often it is nearly the price of a new book.
They especially go a bit crazy with Hardback prices.
Okay my good xmas news now (unfortunately it has nothing to do with cash stipends.) Next year, probably a few months in, Mr Terri's bosses are transferring him. This means two things. 1. He won't be away as much because he'll be working closer to home. 2. (And more importantly ;-)..) He'll be working near a big library system again and I'll be able to get lots of books again!!For those who missed it. We have a large system of connected libraries an hour south of us. My hubby used to work to the south and could pick up and drop off regularly for me. Then he got a new job which took him north. Away from the libraries. For the last 18 months it has been a struggle to get library books.
Now he's going to be working in the south again, I'll be back in action. Library books galore for me! Yip yip!
We got a heart monitor and some weird contraption to monitor your motion... I think it is meant to be to encourage us to exercise and it does look reasonably good if you like that kind of thing. I don't do aerobic exercise though and am totally underwhelmed. I plan to offer it to a friend who does gym type stuff.
Otherwise, would anyone here like it? Shame to waste the thing if there is someone who might use it.
