Terri | 19576 comments Watched Gentlemen Prefer Blondes this afternoon. Been an eternity since I last saw it.
Wow. What a performer that Jane Russell is. Completely overshadowed Marilyn.
Of course, Marilyn overshadowed everything with that fantastic performance of Diamonds Are A Girls Bestfriend, but the movie belonged to Russell.

The fashion was outstanding!! Worth watching the movie just for the fashion!

I'm obsessed with old Hollywood but never actually seen this movie. Am not a Marilyn Monroe fan at all. But if I were to watch it, it would only be for the clothes! :)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Morning all.

Bloody hell, I take a computer break and come back to importunate authors, flying cows and corks! God, I love this place!

On a bum note, I currently have my right wrist in a brace due to a fall courtesy of a crumbling kerb. :(

message 7568: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments In other words you fell? Is a kerb a curb? Is your wrist broken?

Spouse has been a fan of Pink Floyd for ages and got me interested. What is your favorite of theirs, Derek?

Yup kerb = curb.

Yes, I fell. Thankfully nothing broke. Wrist is sprained though.

message 7572: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Bumb wrist? Sounds like corks need to fly at your house. It takes some practice but it is possible to pop a cork with one hand. Generally I don't advocate for bottles without corks but when all else fails....

message 7573: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I have no idea what a bumb wrist is. Stupid smart phones.

I have never had shingles. My Mum did when I as a kid and she was in a lot of pain. I hope you are not suffering too much, Linda.

message 7575: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Poor Margaret. Thank goodness it did not break!

Did you fall into traffic? Was there danger of getting hit?

Terri | 19576 comments Allie wrote: "But if I were to watch it, it would only be for the clothes! :) ..."

Yes, definitely watch it for the clothes. The clothes had my eyes popping all the way through.
Also watch it for Jane Russell's performance. She had a lot more scenes than Marilyn. Marilyn was more her supporting actor.

message 7577: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Derek, I hope you never get them. I had the belt shingles once. The pattern and pain left no doubt as to DX. What I have now is on outside both arms and around ankles

Thankfully I fell onto the footpath.

message 7579: by Linda (new)

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Hit the wrong button. It doesn't hurt so much, so I am not sure it is shingles. Husband is determined to give me a shingles vaccination. LL

I have never had..."

When I was in my 20s, I was told that shingles was what was causing me to have a fever of 104 plus and major, major pain in my back around my kidneys. My boyfriend had to put hot compresses on my back every few hours. There wasn't ibuprofen yet, but I'm not allergic to aspirin, so I took that. The young DR. told me that his office had a prize for anything above 104.5, but since I hadn't reached that high, no prize for me.

I was really surprised when he asked me where I'd been when I started to feel sick. I had been in the pool at the apartment building where I lived that day and the day before and the DR. told me I'd picked up the chicken pox virus from the kids in the pool. When I protested that I'd had chicken pox when I was a kid and did he want to see the scars, he told me all that meant was that I'd not have the eruptions.

So Linda, you have my sympathy and best wishes to get well quickly. I remember how awful I felt, so I hope you are finished with this soon.

Best from
Portia

I would say the same as you if a Dr said it was chicken pox..I'd say "I've already had it". I am surprised to hear that you can get it twice. I didn't realise that.

I thought people didn't get shingles until they were in their sixties? Chicken pox when you are a child, shingles in old age.

Portia, if you were in your 20's, it seems like that would be pretty unusual.

Everyone who's had chickenpox, beware of shingles, which I had several years ago and is horrendous. You can get shingles at any time if you've already had chickenpox; the germ lies dormant in your body. They have a shot now against shingles.

message 7588: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I never got chickenpox. Just could net get it. When I was a kid it was the perceived wisdom that a child should have all the childhood diseases. So I was chuffed off to spend time in close proximity of sick friends.

The pesky chickenpox virus just sailed straight past me. Mum complained to the doctor. Doctor reckoned I must have had a conferred immunity via my father. He had had cowpox, the base of the more vicious, but definitely related to chickenpox, smallpox vaccine.

Terri | 19576 comments I have had the German Measles too. I had it, and was diagnosed, and then when they did the injection at highschool I got it again. The Doctors couldn't explain it.

Special I guess. :]

I'm falling hopelessly behind. *sighs* I don't want any part of that stomach flu, though! :)
