Marialyce One critic thought this novel to be too subversive and many who admire and love Charlotte Bronte for her Jane Eyre didn't even realize she wrote this book as well. Even her very good friend Elizabeth Gaskell said It was not as interesting as Jane Eyre. It is a dark novel and our heroine, Lucy Snowe seems somewhat distant and unaccasible. It is considered to be a non traditional Victorian novel.

Can't wait to begin!

Tim (tjb654) | 45 comments I realize that this comes too late for most of you, since you are far ahead of me in reading Villette, but I just found the book in two volumes in Google Books. Each volume has an appendix with translations of the French. I am finding the appendices a handy reference. Here are the links:
