Aeva Personally, I disliked Katniss.

Throughout the entire series i found her to be a whining little girl without developed thought.

What really pushed me to the edge was how she voted to continue the Hunger Games once the war was over. I thought the entire point of the civil war was to stop the hunger games. She had gone through them herself and so I think she should have realized that they served no purpose.
I understand that she wanted to revenge Prim's death, but, in my opinion, one death does not justify countless more.

What do you guys think?

Jules:) In MJ yes she pissed me off. Too complainy and sedated all the time. (is complainy even a word?:P) But I think she voted for the games because she had in her head to kill Coin. Collins didn't let us see that, but she kinda hints at it when Haymitch and Katniss have their lil exchange at the table. Maybe?

Kirby ~Jules:3 wrote: "In MJ yes she pissed me off. Too complainy and sedated all the time. (is complainy even a word?:P) But I think she voted for the games because she had in her head to kill Coin. Collins didn't let u..."

I believe it would be "complaintful." :)

and, yes, I agree that katniss never actually wanted there to be any more games...another clue to that (I thought) was that she said, "for prim," and at that point she blamed coin- not the capitol- for prim's death.

Emily I loved the books, but at times I did find Katniss slightly weak and annoying. She completely broke down at nearly every turn, but i guess it made her more human instead of being this untouchable person.

i think Katniss voted for a new Hunger Games because that's just the kind of mentality she has. Just because you wouldn't choose that doesn't mean that she, in her situation wouldn't. But that definatly made me mad.

Jules:) Kirby wrote: "~Jules:3 wrote: "In MJ yes she pissed me off. Too complainy and sedated all the time. (is complainy even a word?:P) But I think she voted for the games because she had in her head to kill Coin. Col..."

Ahahaha thxs Kirby:P And ya, she was not liking Coin at that point

Shay Yeah, she drove me crazy several times. However, I like her. In a way, I feel like she tried to act tough when deep down she really isn't in a way.

Jules:) Rike' wrote: "Yeah, she drove me crazy several times. However, I like her. In a way, I feel like she tried to act tough when deep down she really isn't in a way."

Ya I think that's true...she didn't like showing weakness

Odalys I really disliked Katniss.

Walter Ullon My litmus test for character likeablity deals explicitly with said character's ability to procure my friendship in an alternate universe.

The possibility of this hypothetical relatioship affects how well I end up liking the narrative as well, as I believe that the character's likeability is directly proportional to the enjoyment of the story.

I would not let Katniss be my friend.

Cat duh

message 11: by Emma (new) - rated it 3 stars

Emma Martínez Is not as if I dislike her but I must admit that it annoyed me how much it took her to decide becoming the Mockinjay, I mean I really never understood why to refuse since it was the only logic thing to do.
Also I don't know if it just me but in the first book I though of her as someone with more guts. Don't get me wrong she has a lot of courage, not anyone could have done everything she did, she proved her bravery in a lot of stressful and difficult times, but I always though that she would enter the battlefield willingly and had the same leadership that Gale showed, maybe with a kinder point of view, but still she would be a rebel... and she was not.

As I've read in some blog maybe all of those reactions from Katniss were because the war and becoming the symbol of the revolution were thing she never choose, the situation forced to do that. All started because of the berries stunt but she only did it to protect Peeta not as some act against the capitol, she never planned to start a fight that would have so many consequences and deaths so maybe she was such a whinny because she was not prepared and she started to break.

Diana ❀ ☺ i kinda disliked her too because of going back and forth with peeta and gale...! like she likes peeta but next thing you know she kisses gale!!

Cassy Annoying? I found her irritating to the max. By the end, i was like, what the hell happened to the Katniss we all know and love from the Hunger Games? She went from awesome to a confused zombie who couldn't make up her mind...i dislike her greatly!

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked her, I think she was just acting like a girl who had been put through a lot of stress and was worn out and didn't know what to do...

message 15: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee I liked her, I thought she was a strong, independent character in the books..but that's just me.

Elizabeth (Llewellyn) Green I did find her annoying at times. But hey, in the second book she's supposed to be what, 17? She watched all these kids die, killed some her self, her town gets blown up, she has all this guilt, it seems like her and gales relationship is falling apart, and peeta is getting tortured and brainwashed. In the third book he tries to kill her. I think it's understandable and more real for her to be confused and unsure.

Alexa She really annoyed me when she got to the love triangle crisis of her life, but I really admire her bravery and courage. I can't blame her for acting the way she did after everything she's gone through.

Monica I found her annoying and the character took a step backwards in mockingjay(which in my opinion just a bad book) but i liked her in the first two books.

Torie Aeva wrote: "Personally, I disliked Katniss.

Many have speculated that Katniss really didn't want the hunger games to continue and only voted yes to lull Coin into a false sense of security. I think the games became null and void after Coin was assassinated because someone new stepped into power

message 20: by Deta (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deta Adams I also struggled with why she agreed to the games. I came to the conclusion that she wanted Snow to believe that they were going to have the games and that his grandaughter would be in them. Coin tells Katniss that she will make sure that Snow knows before he died. Since the games never really happened and both Coin and Snow died, she kinda got the best revenge she could have hoped for.

I liked her because she was flawed and struggling...those are the things that made me feel for her and feel the pain that comes with knowing that you are failing in people's expectations of you.

message 21: by Stephanie (last edited Jan 17, 2012 02:01PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Stephanie Katniss never annoyed me. She was real. People aren't meant to be perfect and say exactly what everybody wants or thinks they should or should not say. Yes, at times Katniss was off. She went through hell and made it back. Can we really pick off her flaws after all that she had gone through? I know that if I had gone through all she did, I wouldn't have turned out nearly as well as she did. Who can really say they would have been any better? And I don't just meant that she became damaged by the hunger games, but before and after. She lived in chaos and still managed to shine bright. I don't think she should be judged on flickering now and then.

Tanvira Hate her but admire her.I hate her in general but I love what she can do and......what she gets.....>________<

Jay no katniss is cool

message 24: by Sam (new) - rated it 2 stars

Sam katniss was epic in the hunger games, even more epic in catching fire, and crashed and burned to ashes in mockingjay. i disowned her halfway through the last book.

message 25: by WinterRose (new)

WinterRose Katniss is one of those characters that I started off liking and ended up hating by the end of the series. I couldn't stand her, but what's more is how worshipped she is by everyone else. I found her very unlikeable.

Obi loves Chewy No I liked her from the start

Gwynn White Cassy wrote: "Annoying? I found her irritating to the max. By the end, i was like, what the hell happened to the Katniss we all know and love from the Hunger Games? She went from awesome to a confused zombie who..."

I agree. I think it was a tragic waste of a great literary character.

Gwynn White A lot of people are saying that she can be excused for becoming a drug-dependent, self-absorbed whiner in Mockingjay because of all she had lived through, but I don't buy that. It wasn't the premise of the series. SC set her up as a girl who stood back for nothing and who could take on the Capital in her defiance. How could she allow the character to just deteriorate from such a high? I felt she did Katniss a dis-service.

Tanvira I've loved all the characters in the series except her.She was annoying, cranky, indecisive and a huge pain.what i can never stand. She's got talent, that's all I like about her or else shes more or less a dumb ass!Man,I know when you lose someone you love you're shattered but it doesn't mean you can go ahead and make out with someone else.PEETA loved her,OKAAAY?I know that I could never have done something like that, that's why she has a sister!I mean, really!

Stephanie Gwynneth wrote: "A lot of people are saying that she can be excused for becoming a drug-dependent, self-absorbed whiner in Mockingjay because of all she had lived through, but I don't buy that. It wasn't the premise..."

I don't agree. Katniss was realistic. She went into the first hunger games just wanting to survive. She did nothing but try to survive throughout a majority of the parts in the books. She was someone who was made into a hero who fought against the capital when all she really wanted to do was get out of there and back home to care for Prim and her mother. How can a person blame her for not wanting the position of being a hero? Or, for being forced to and then flailing under the immense pressure? Suzanne Collins may have written about Katniss falls to be realistic. Do you seriously think that anyone could do all that and still stand strong? I think she can be excused at the very least bit.

THANKYOU!!! No one listens to me when i voice my exact same opinion on Katniss... I'm just glad I'm not the only one..

Nya Tomlinson-Horan-Malik-Payne-Styles katniss is okay. if she was real, i wouldnt rush to be her friend. i think she and i would just be buddies.

Sam Gwynneth wrote: "A lot of people are saying that she can be excused for becoming a drug-dependent, self-absorbed whiner in Mockingjay because of all she had lived through, but I don't buy that. It wasn't the premise..."

yes, i completely agree. katniss was supposed to be a kick-ass heroine, not letting anything control her. she was the one who scorned her mother for "checking out" and it was exactly what she did. she may be struggling from PTSD, but the katniss in the beginning would've fought it with everything she had.

Jacob I liked her but she did annoy me throughout the book, with the Peeta and Gale thing, and always snapping on ppl but she had good things about her to though.

message 35: by MDM (new) - rated it 3 stars

MDM Thank God other people feel the same way!!! I am only through the first two chapters of Mockingjay and I already want to wring Katniss by the neck!!! She is unbearably annoying and immature in this novel! Not sure if Ms. Collins intended for this to be the reader's perception- if so, kudos on a great success!

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

I didn't find her annoying for the first two books. In the last one, she was INCREDIBLY whiny and annoying. She's probably one of the main reasons why I hated the last book. -_- I get she lost Peeta, but that doesn't mean you cry in closets and lose all hope. You have a rebellion to run! Get off your butt and get to it!

message 37: by Amanda (Gale's Chosen One) (last edited Mar 21, 2012 04:54PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amanda (Gale's Chosen One) Potter I loved Katniss.
Of course, I found her annoying and there were times where I wanted to get inside the book and punch her in the face but I understand her completely. If I went through what Katniss did I'd probably end up in the same state.

The thing I loved about Katniss though is she's so cold and flawed at times and as you said annoying- but that makes her more relateable and human.
I'd much rather read about Katniss than some other YA "heroine".

I think in order to be a great heroine you need to be like Katniss who is so flawed and cold. It's much more interesting to read about.
Every great character in my opinion has a flaw that drives you crazy but you can over look that and see how much of a great character like Katniss is.
She's actually my 3rd overall favourite heroine behind Hermione( Harry Potter) and Tessa( The Infernal Devices).

message 38: by Jack (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jack Katniss was okay in the first book. It was all downhill from there.

I especially hated her from the second Hunger Games on. It was REALLY annoying when she became so paranoid about every other player, and was convinced they were trying to kill her.

And in Mockingjay...

I don't think that was even Katniss anymore. I think it was her way weaker, way more annoying long-lost twin sister, because damn, she was annoying. She was way weak, and nothing like the strong heroine she was in the first two books.

Mockingjay in general was like that.

Well said. Those are my feelings exactly.

Jacobismypetwerewolf Uhh annoying? Seriously you FIND her annoying? She's strong and confident unlike in some teen books for example Bella from twilight. Compared to Bella, she's the most confident person ever -.- I can't believe people think she's gone all weak in catching fire and mockingjay just because their was romance in them. And plus wouldnt you be paranoid if you were in that situation where everyone would kill you to get fame and fortune and wealth. -_______- this fucking 'katniss is annoying' annoys me. -______________________-

message 41: by Jthen7 (new)

Jthen7 I hated the fact that SC made Katniss the center of morality in her world. For example, if Katniss killed another kid it was because she had too but the "careers" were automatically evil for preparing for the games, or the fact that when she gets a bunch of people killed on a fake mission, it's fine because they knew she was lying...

Cassy Jacobismypetwerewolf wrote: "Uhh annoying? Seriously you FIND her annoying? She's strong and confident unlike in some teen books for example Bella from twilight. Compared to Bella, she's the most confident person ever -.- I ca..."

When you compare her to Bella, you are absolutely right. But Bella and Katniss aren't the only female protagonists out there. There are thousands of books where strong, confident young women remain strong and confident throughout troubles. Look at books like Matched, and The Chemical Garden Trilogy. All the characters are put through terrible ordeals but still stay true to who they are. The fact that she voted for the Hunger Games, and was so obsessed with revenge was what really annoyed me about her. Instead of trying to make things better, she just became a depressed, vacant shell of the person she used to be. And if you say, "but she went through horrible ordeals"...all I can say is...so did Peeta, but he remained faithful to who he was and what he believed in all throughout the book!

Alicia Haynes A common complaint I've seen with many others is that in the third book she seemed crazy and incredibly unstable. While Mockingjay Katniss was not my favorite of the books, I find her character to be most east to relate in this piece. Realistically, we lose a small part of ourselves when we lose those we love. However, for Katniss most of her losses were quick and clustered. Her ability to adjust were not going to be spectacular in consideration of her age and the influence she had from her mother. Nature and nurture, which we can easily forget to acknowledge, played a role in her entire behavior throughout the last parts of the war.

In regard to her choice to keep the Games going, there's no perfect answer to this since in the last book Katniss' thoughts were not cohesive and occasionally difficult to understand. I think many have hit the obvious answer that she wanted to avenge Prim's death. Also, I noticed many thought it was a plot against Coin, which I suspected had been looming in between the lines Collin's wrote. For my personal preference I've always reasoned with myself that her decision was made in her selfishness. She wants to make her own decisions, she's never listened to anyone before. It could be in her own strange way that she expected the vote to be in favor of not carrying out the Games in the future, and being an uncontrollable part of her personality she voted the other way.

However, there's always the possibility that there was no reasoning behind it at all. Not everyone is perfect and not every character is flawless. Everyone's opinion is their own.

Celine_dailey Yes i did find Katniss annoying. I personally didn't like her I was fond of the story and the other characters mostly.

message 45: by Valeria (new)

Valeria I don't personally like her as a person, I mean, her character was kickass and all that and she was confident and cool but if I met her in real life I just wouldn't like her. Some say that her character was realistic but in my opinion that doesn't mean it's likable. I mean real people are unlikable aren't they. The fact that her character was realistic has nothing to do with the fact that she was not likable as a character.

message 46: by Isabella (last edited Jan 02, 2013 07:14AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Isabella Katniss is actually one of my favourite characters out of any book ever. And I mean, ever. She's actually realistic. She's not all happy and perfect all the time, like a lot of other characters I can name. She's flawed. It makes her a lot more interesting to read about.

She started off in the first book as a strong, decisive character who just wanted to make it out of the games alive, if possible. Just for Prim. She did, but not only did she have to deal with living through that, the Capitol was after her as well. She became one of the centre's of attention in the media. That was probably hard to deal with.

Then she had to go through the games a second time. Again, same kind of traumatizing experience as the first time, only it didn't last as long because she was broken out by the rebels. Only to be told that her district was burned to the ground, and her not really knowing who made it out or not.

Of course, that's not enough for a sixteen turned seventeen year old girl to go through.

She wanted to become part of the rebellion, and now she is. Except it doesn't seem like she's doing what she wants to. After going to see a hospital, then to have it bombed and then later getting shot in another district. Then going to the Capitol, watching quite a few friends die, and thinking about a plot by the President for her death.

And then her sister, the reason that she went into the games in the first place, being killed right in front of her. And one of her best friends designed the bombs that killed her.

You think that she's going to be perfectly all right after all of that?

Anyways, I think that there's quite a few reasons for her to be a lot different than she was from the first book.

She is only worshiped in the capitol because she one the hunger games, shes the symbol of rebelian to the rebels, she fights for them, but they dont know her personality. I repeat katniss herself said she was unlikeable, the only reason people "worshipped" her were for two thing pretty much out of her control. She is supposed to be unlikeable, but even so i really liked her
