Shannon (glitco) | 7 comments Lately I have been in a huge reading funk. I can't seem to be interested in anything and simply don't want to read. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get over this?

message 2: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 291 comments I know the feeling. I usually take a break for a little while. Eventually the drive to read will come back.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I never had a reading funk where I never wanted to read.

message 4: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 68 comments I have had that happen Shannon. I took a break like Veronica said. I have a friend who got in such a funk after our MA program she just switched to audio books for a while. Maybe try that?

message 5: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments I often get into a reading funk this time of year. I usually just keep trying different books until something takes hold. I also use it as a time to catch up on movies or crafty projects.

Mary (marybt) | 336 comments Watch TV for a couple hours. The horrible quality of shows now will send you straight back to books! lol.

Seriously though, when I get like that, I'll read a book of short stories, usually funny. Celia Rivenbark, Dave Barry, Bill Bryson, Erma Bombeck. That usually works - plus, you don't have to finish the book in one whack. You can put it aside and read small snippets between books.

Sandra (sandee) | 328 comments Mary, that is so true. But I must admit that I have been enjoying the Big Bang Theory....it's on when I am making dinner...and to be honest it's on almost all day.

Shannon, it could be the books you are reading. I found that I thought I had no desire to read, but I just had the wrong stack of books. Have you tried Europa Editions? they have some great books.

I'm in a funk too. I pick up books that I'm normally interested in or on my TBR list and I just cant get into anything. I've been trying shorter books or novellas. Usually I break out of any funk but just reading the threads here on what people are reading and just finishing and other hot book discussions. If there is a lot of buzz around something that sometimes helps me.

Elizabeth (Alaska) If you can't get into what you normally read, then try reading something you normally wouldn't read.

Lori Baldi | 184 comments This is the time of year that I start a jigsaw puzzle. Someone else suggested a craft or knitting. We just need to mix things up a bit. I read much less than I used to but always read before going to sleep. But I've gone through a funk where nothing takes hold. We have so much choice and I'm very grateful for the variety.

message 12: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (glitco) | 7 comments Thank you all for the suggestions! Hopefully I snap out of this soon enough!

message 13: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 229 comments This happened to me during the fall. Had never happened before. I set up the DVR for a bunch of new shows and by the time the holidays got here I was dying to get into a good book.

message 14: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments I always break my funks my reading me "easy reads" I can always be interested in James Patterson. His books go so quickly I look forward to more challenging reads after!

message 15: by Allison (new)

Allison (sockweasel) ^ Easy reads are my go-to when I'm in a reading rut too. For me that's usually chick lit like Sophie Kinsella or Jennifer Weiner. It's always a nice break to read something so quick and easy.

Good luck!

message 16: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) | 212 comments I either use the easy read trick or I just plain take a break for a few days. I usually come back around after about a few days or sometimes a week.

I concur! Watch a few hours of TV and you'll have NO problems picking up quality literature again! LOL

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Shannon, I used to get into reading funks from time to time but have had 2 awful, prolonged ones in 2010 and 2011. I'm trying to read things I wouldn't normally read in an effort to break out of it.

I'm with Jayme...I don't think I've ever been in a reading funk where I didn't feel like reading. It seems to me, though that the advice about taking a break is good, though...why force it if you don't feel into it?

message 22: by Mary (new)

Mary (marybt) | 336 comments So did you ever break out of your funk, Shannon?

message 23: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (glitco) | 7 comments I'm still in it :( I think it's because I am so busy but I actually started a book yesterday and read for an hour so perhaps I am slowly coming out of it!

message 24: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Shannon I agree with all this great advice. Taking a break. TV or crafts. I also found I got in a bit of a funk until I stopped comparing myself and trying to keep up. That may not have anything to do with you but when I first joined years ago I wanted to read all the group reads and read X number a year. My crazy work schedule didn't allow. And I had to pick what I wanted when I could get to it. Not worry about whether it was "good" enough to be posted about. To thine own self be true.

message 25: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Hickman (bkread2) | 233 comments Well get there sometimes! I agree with the earlier posts on doing something crafty or listening to audio books. I listen to audiobooks while walking sometimes to keep from thinking about my exercise. But sometimes I re-read books of a series and it gets me in the mood. This year I have not felt like reading toothy new stuff in the last few weeks so I've been quilting and incidentally been reading how to books on quilting. (FYI I'm just as distracted w/ projects as reading I so far have 3 quilt tops done but none finished to use yet :) !) just try to get moving & be active an active body keeps your mind active too!

message 26: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I have LOTS and lots of UFO'S Leslie! And I love quilting! I'd love to know what you are reading. You should post those to the what-you're reading-now threads too.
