Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Have ya spotted the new challenge box on the home page?
If not, it's time ya got to the eye doctor >;)

Goodreads recently created a "create challenge" option within groups. The feature link can be found on the right hand tool bar above the "search discussion posts" box.

The challenge works similarly to GR's yearly reading challenge on your home page. When you join the challenge, you are asked to state the number of books you'll attempt to read and the name of the shelf where your challenge books are held. The shelf name refers to the shelf (that will be automatically created for you when you enter the name) on YOUR profile. It doesn't refer to a group bookshelf.

In order for your challenge ticker to "catch" the books you've read, you will need to move your challenge books to that shelf and post a read date within the challenge duration dates. As you do that, the ticker will count down your books read showing your progress to all participants and create a "view books" link once the first book is read. All of this will be familiar to those of you who have used GR's yearly reading challenge.

I have created one as a test run for our group re/read of Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series in prep for the 2012 release of Tangle of Need.

All joking aside, in case you really did miss the challenge box, it's located on the home page under our "currently reading" box. You can access the challenge box here. In case you don't want to join in this way, but do want to take part in the challenge, you can access the challenge thread (same as our others) here. Either way you join in the fun is cool with us. As of right now, 12 people have joined in on the "box" challenge (not really sure what to call that thing), including me.

So, this being a test run and all, I thought I'd open a thread for us to talk about what we dis/like about the "box", how to use it in the future or if you prefer we avoid using it in the future, etc.

(Yes, I realize I rambled a bit, but wanted to make sure everyone understood what the thingymadohicky does. Now, what should we call that thing! LOL!)

Let us know what you think!

message 8: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Other groups have tested this new feature and I like it though it's hard to remember to place the book in that particular shelf. The GRs 2012 challenge is easy because it works off your READ shelf which is easy to remember or forget.)

message 9: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Hmm...it is hard to remember, so maybe Don's is a better idea...GRGC is likely to get scrambled in my brain with the GR12RC...

Barbara, the easy way is to put the books on that shelf when you start the challenge or before you read it. RRRCs was easy I just created a Challenges 2012 shelf, and for ours here I already had a Nalini Singh shelf.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments :D Thingymadohicky it is.

I add my books to the shelf as soon as I join the challenge, otherwise I'd forget too.

I'll have to try to remember to join in on RRRC's one too. Still haven't gotten my lists together for 2012 challenges. Will do that soon.

Lauren (laurenjberman) I like the Thingymadohicky, too. It is very satisfying to see the count go up as you read.

Tessa (tessamc) | 171 comments Not that I need another challenge, but I cant stop myself from asking--what is RRRC?

message 18: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Terri it is another group here at GR that a lot of our members belong to, in fact a lot of us met there :)

Romance Readers Reading Challenges

All types of books are acceptable including pnr & no one minds at all if you also slip in uf.

message 19: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL! Oh my, if you haven't found RRRC yet, Terri, and aren't looking to join any add'l challenges, that is NOT the group for you. You will find no shortage of good ones over there!

message 20: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Oh...Terri...you're gonna have so much fun over there!

message 21: by Tessa (new)

Tessa (tessamc) | 171 comments OMG, no wonder I couldn't find it in the SOS challenge list! I'll check it out. I'm assuming they don't mind if I list books that qualify for more than one challenge? It's not like I wouldn't be reading something anyway!

You're right Judithe, getting involved in this group has made GR soooo much more fun! Thanks Ya'll!!

message 22: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments LOL! Cross-challenging is almost always acceptable there, too!

And the same is true for me...love this group!
