I will try for 15 different countries, at least. I mostly read authors who are from USA/England or other country with English as mother tongue. Especially USA. So that is why I wanna do this challenge. I hope to get more than 15 but I don´t dare to give a higher number!
I am in. I have no clue where the majority of the authors I read are from. I am guessing North America or England for most, but who knows. Worth some research. So let's say... 6? I should be able to manage that surely!
I have one done, as it turns out that Oscar Wilde was born in Ireland. For anyone who wants to see what I read and the review and such, it's in my personal challenge thread.
Johanna, maybe you can make a thread just devoted to the books that everyone has read and where they are from with a link so if so if someone wants to read it to count know where to count it. (just a thought)
I am up to three for this challenge. I've read The Help by Kathryn Stockett who was born in Jackson, Mississippi, USA. My third book was by Paint Your Dragon by Tom Holt born in London, UK. So I have Ireland, USA and England so far!
Edit: Ratings and reviews are in my Personal Challenge thread if anyone is interested.
I have Finland, USA and England, the easiest ones! :) I have also started on France with my door stopper book!
I think it is a matter of not realizing where some of these authors are from. Though I clearly have more USA and English authors than anything else, if I had only known I would have had a German author... but I read the book at the end of 2011 :(
The same with me, mostly american/english authors. Though now if read quite a few in my mother tongue as well. But I also have been suprised where some authors are from now that I have actually checked! Someone not from usa/england in the group might give us some hints?! People help us! What would you recommend from your country?
Well, I can give you some suggestions for Canada. 1. I do honestly believe that everyone should read at least one of L.M. Montgomery's books in their lifetime. The author of the famous Anne of Green Gables series, she was born in P.E.I.
2. I cannot make a list of Canadian authors without putting down Margaret Atwood. I will say that I have read several of her books and not liked any of them. But people the world over love her. She was born in Ontario.
3. Kenneth Oppel from British Columbia wrote a much loved children's/YA series about bats, the Silverwing books. Apparently he also wrote a couple of other series I was unaware of. My son loved Silverwing and I enjoyed it as well.
4. Gordon Korman was born in my own Montreal, Quebec and then moved to Ontario. He's a prolific children's/YA author. One of my favourite as a child and one of my kids' favourites too. Both my kids and I prefer his humourous series, like the Bruno and Boots books or the Swindle trilogy, though I hear his other series were very well written/well received as well. Most recently he's known for writing several of the very popular 39 Clues books.
That's all I have for now!
None of these are modern but:Homer: Greece
Dante: Italy
Cervantes: Spain
Dumas, Hugo: France
Chekov, Tolstoy, Solzhenitsyn: Russia
Orwell: Although raised in England, born in India
So far I found:Japan
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Britain
The Roar by Emma Clayton
Australian
Mac Slater Hunts the Cool by Tristan Bancks
Canada
Airborn by Kenneth Oppel
Sara I know you are such a Pratchett fan, you must give Tom Holt a whirl at some point, Holt is not quite as good in my opinion, but still a similar style (You can check my review of one of his books in my personal challenge thread). He's also from England.
I´ve read Atwood´s Handmaid´s Tale and I have thought that I should read Anne of Green Gables, at least one book. And I think I have some other Canadian authors lined up already :) So that should be easy! Thanks for the suggestions!
I'm going to attempt to read 6 books by authors from different countries. This will be interesting.I'll track in my member's corner
