I've never been into the whole western thing, but I loved this book. I've since obsessively read most of what Doig has written, but this remains my favorite. Epic, sweet, sad, smart...

This book was recommended by a friend and the contents were a complete surprise. It was a glimpse of those Europeans who settled the state of Montana and the difficulties they endured as well as the the complex human relationships that develop in all communities and families.

If you enjoyed this book, pick up Doig's English Creek. In my opinion it is even better, and involves itself with the same family, different generation.
