Count of Monte Cristo Chap. 21 thru 25
date
newest »

Edmond has just contrived a way to remain alone on the Island of Monte Cristo.
Edmond returns home to find his father long-dead and Mercedes disappeared. It's hard to go home to a home that is no longer there.
I've just purchased the Penguin complete version, and I already notice some differences. The language flows a little better (the other one wasn't bad, really) but most importantly there are really good footnotes which explain a whole lot of stuff. I may have to go back and read the beginning just to get all the political information. There's also a long introduction which I haven't read, yet.
Edmond has just escaped from the prison and managed to swim to the island. One wonders how he is going to manage without a stitch of clothing on, save that red cap he found.

I'm reading the Penguin version as well, and those footnotes have been very helpful!

I will eventually buy a hard copy of this. It's too good to have only as an eBook.
I think I will read this more than once!
I knew you'd love it, Jeannette! :-)
Thanks for encouraging me to read it. :)

I'd forgotten this bit... clever man. But would his companions really have abandoned him so?

Isn't that the truth, Kim. I find when I'm reading in a foreign language that I have to set a dictionary limit, or I too would be forever looking things up. I usually limit myself to 2 words per page. If I know I can't use the dictionary my brain forces itself to figure out what the word means.
I've never tried an audio in Italian or French. (chicken!)

I'm not even looking up all of the English words I don't know! I'd be in big trouble trying to read this in another language.

They were smugglers, so their first thought was their trade. That they came back for him shows that they truly cared for Edmond.

Just finished this chapter. I've been busy and haven't been able to read much! I'm out and about again today... hopefully I'll get a seat on the bus so I can read going into town.
Chapter 25 ends with Edmond visiting the village of Les Catalans, asking for news of Mercedes and Fernand.
