Ted (efcorson) | 151 comments Augusto Pinochet? Someone reviled, but he apparently went to military school at age 18, so #5, 7, and 8 don't work. And, you say Latin America, not South America. Can't think of what movie either. This is a killer, Manuel!

A person:

1. Heir of a whiskey fortune.
2. His toothache led to the formation of the Royal Army Dental Corps.
3. "The machine gun is a much over-rated weapon; two per battalion is more than sufficient."
4. Refused to visit the front lines, "lest the sight of wounded men" affect his judgment.
5. Received a state funeral.

No, that's right. "Took the minutes," as in a meeting.

Refined clues:
1. Took the minutes at an important meeting
2. "11 million" - an inital estimate
3. Klement - final last name
4. Didn't get off the expected bus

message 423: by Ted (last edited Mar 15, 2009 12:39PM) (new)

Ted (efcorson) | 151 comments OK, I'm trying not to give it away. Instead of adding additional clues, as is customary, let me further elaborate on the current ones:

1. Took the minutes at a high-ranking conference
2. "11 million" - a rough estimate
3. Klement - last name (an alias)
4. Didn't get off his accustomed bus

I seem to remember a movie where he was going to get kidnapped by Israeli agents in Buenos Aires. They were waiting for him to get off the bus

Ted (efcorson) | 151 comments Manuel wrote: "Adolf Eichmann?

Yes! Good one, Manuel.

1. Eichmann took the minutes at the infamous Wannsee Conference on January 20, 1942, the purpose of which was to inform Nazi administrative leaders that Reinhard Heydrich had been appointed as the chief executor of the "Final solution to the Jewish question."

2. "11 million" Eichmann made up a chart listing his estimate of how many Jews inhabited each country under Nazi rule at the time. This was his total.

3. Riccardo Klement was Eichmann's alias in Buenos Aires

4. The Mossad had set up (technically illegal) operations in Argentina. They discvoered Eichmann's whereabouts and watched him come and go for a week. They finally decided to pounce, but on the evening they selected, he didn't get off the commuter bus that he usually did. Insead of scrubbing the operation, they waited and grabbed him as he got off a later bus.

message 426: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments

Initially I thought 11 million was a reference to WWI dead.

The clue that grabbed my attention was #4-the bus.

I remember the movie was kind of exciting. The Israeli agent who was going to grab him didnt even speak Spanish, all he knew how to say was.....
"Un momentito, por favor" and he pretended he needed a match for a cigarette.

Not sure of the title
possibly? The Man on Garabaldi Street?

I think the title is The House on Garibaldi Street, Manuel - it's the title of a book by Hannah Arendt about Eichmann's capture and trial.

message 429: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments thanks Susanna,
I knew it was something on Garabaldi Street.

Every time I travel to S America, Im always surprised at how many local companies have German sounding names. I cant help thinking of who and WHEN they were started.
My Argentine friends still make it into a sort of joke about the Peron era and their reputation.

Manuel | 1439 comments apparently she had a great affair with John Barrymore before she got married,

supposedly Stanford White didnt approve of her seeing Barrymore, even though Barrymore was 19 and White was 47 when they slept with her.

White had her shipped off to boarding school and had her abort her pregnancy.
She latter had a child she claimed was her husband's, but he had been in jail during the baby's conception.
