Old-Barbarossa That one fell right into my lap. Reading loads of Dark Ages Hx just now.
He stuck in my mind as he went to Rome to get baptised by the pope and died a few days later. He either had lucky, or very unlucky, timing.

I'm trying to be as cryptic as I can...but it's in Wiki (amongst other sites), though the Wiki mention seems to embelish a wee bit.

Aye...are you reading the same books as me just now?

Short series of events known by one name.
1) Green and blue. - Colours of the rival teams with political influence. Regular riots with different factions trying to influence Imperial opinion by mobilising one group or the other.
2) Sport related. - Chariot racing at the Hippodrome in Constantinople.
3) Protest at sentences. - Some fans condemned to execution after rioting.

5) 2 principle ministers removed as an attempt to satisfy the mob. - A Praetorian Prefect and a Quaestor.
6) Victory. - The chant of "Nika" became the ralling call of the rioters.
7) 30,000 dead. - Belisarius entered the Hippodrome "team handed", and on the orders of the Emperor Justinian executed all there.
For a fictional account see:
Count Belisarius

Tim (mcgyver5) | 17 comments heh. I was looking through news reports of recent British Football riots to solve that one.

1) Washington, DC
2) 1970s
3) Upset over release of film
4) Among the wounded was someone easily recognized today.

message 1866: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments The Hanafi Siege, 1977.

Gunmen took over 3 Washington DC buildings.
B'Nai B'brith
Islamic Center of Washington
The District Building (city hall) among the wounded was Marion Barry, then just a councilman.

Among the demands was the destruction of the movie.
Mohammed Messenger of God. They thought the movie was blasphemous.

The Crisis was mediated by 3 Islamic ambassadors from
Egypt
Pakistan
Iran

I remember this because Carter had just entered office and everyone said this was a test of his leadership.

Kind of a shame their aim wasn't better. Losing Barry would have cleaned up the world by a fair amount.

message 1872: by Ted (new)

Ted (efcorson) | 151 comments The only person I can come up with is also Francis Ford Coppola, assuming that the "masterpiece" is "Apocalypse Now" I don't think that Laurence Fishburne's character qualifies as "the hero," though.

Another stab might be Michael Cimino for "The Deer Hunter," but this film certainly has no black hero.

Robert Altman?

message 1879: by Ted (new)

Ted (efcorson) | 151 comments Norman Jewison, "In the Heat of the Night" starring Sidney Poitier?

A reaction to and reflection of the civil rights movement, though. Matches all criteria except #2 and possibly #3. Also not an all-white cast, as I recall.

message 1884: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments Well worth seeing Ted.

The blood in the movie was actually chocolate syrup and the flesh they were eating was baked ham.
The movie was filmed between Sept-Dec 1967.
Originally it had a different title, but another movie was already using the working title.
Cost $113,000 to make, returned $12 million in domestic sales and $30 million abroad.
