While you provide us with the explanation for your clues, I will be thinking about my next question.

Answer must be precise ie: the name of the event.
1. Happened when a previous planned event was canceled.
2. Early success was illusory.
3. Justified by a theory that was unproven and false.
4. Violated a treaty signed 2 years earlier.

Explanation:
1. Son of a linen-merchant. I think this one is self-explanatory.
2. Educated illegally. Pope's parents were Catholic. He was educated furtively and, in the end, at home, via much reading.
3. A hunchback. He had Pott's Disease.
4. Bought villa, complete with spring and grotto, but, alas, no nymphs. His house, at Twickenham, is gone, I believe, although the grotto remains. It is open to the public once a year. Pope once said the only thing it was missing was nymphs. They found the spring while they were adding the grotto.

Sorry about that. I live in Hong Kong and because of the storms and earthquake in Taiwan, which destroyed a number of cables, I have had very spotty access to many sites.

Is clue 5 refered to in this quote?
"You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched glasses when your back was turned! Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha..."
— William Goldman (The Princess Bride)

I hope you're not implying that I'm a major military assault with a view to genocide and oil theft that was carried out with poor understanding of terrain and meteorological conditions?
I am a comedy pirate, more akin to Captain Red Beard Rum of Blackadder fame than a slush disrupted advance into Russia.
