One of the technically smartest people I know is dyslexic.

message 1680: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments Columbian Exposition/aka/Chicago World's Fair 1893

message 1681: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence. My wife & two of my kids are dyslexic. While not in Einstein's class, none of them is stupid. My son is a network engineer, my wife holds a BA & a BS.

My daughter is doing well in college & even managed decent marks in a Spanish, although they told her halfway through she didn't have to take it because someone like her could never manage to pass it.

Ed (ejhahn) | 72 comments Manuel wrote: "Columbian Exposition/aka/Chicago World's Fair 1893"

Nope! Do you all need another clue? Perhaps the word architect was misleading. I meant it in it's broadest sense.

1. Changed the face of the U.S.A. forever.

2. Involved someone who had to violate his principles.

3. Was considered a wasteland by many.

4. Disappointed its architect because of one thing that was missing.

5. Its name is misleading.

The Manhattan Project?

message 1684: by Ed (new)

Ed (ejhahn) | 72 comments Susanna wrote: "The Manhattan Project?"

Nice guess but you're in the wrong century, which becomes clue #6

1. Changed the face of the U.S.A. forever.

2. Involved someone who had to violate his principles.

3. Was considered a wasteland by many.

4. Disappointed its architect because of one thing that was missing.

5. Its name is misleading.

Ed (ejhahn) | 72 comments Tony wrote: "The Mexican-American War?"

Good guess. Right century wrong decade. See clue #6

1. Changed the face of the U.S.A. forever.

2. Involved someone who had to violate his principles.

3. Was considered a wasteland by many.

4. Disappointed its architect because of one thing that was missing.

5. Its name is misleading.

6. Early 19th Century.

7. One of the indirect causes of the Civil War.

Are my clues too vague? The next one will most likely be the closer. But maybe someone will get it before tomorrow.

Ed

Manuel | 1439 comments The Louisiana Purchase

message 1690: by Ed (new)

Ed (ejhahn) | 72 comments Manuel wrote: "The Louisiana Purchase"

You are correct. Explanation follows.

1. Changed the face of the U.S.A. forever.
Ex: No longer 13 ex-colonies and opened up the West to exploration and exploitation.

2. Involved someone who had to violate his principles.
Ex: Thomas Jefferson violated his belief in strict interpretation of the constitution to do this. No where in the constitution is the Federal Government empowered to expand the borders of the U.S.A.

3. Was considered a wasteland by many.
ex: The West was almost totally unknown and many people felt that the $3 million had been spent on a wasteland.

4. Disappointed its architect because of one thing that was missing.
ex: Jefferson was hoping for a water route from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately the Rockies intervened.

5. Its name is misleading.
ex. What is now Louisiana is a tiny part of the purchase. Jefferson was originally just looking to buy New Orleans.

6. Early 19th Century.
ex: 1803

7. One of the indirect causes of the Civil War.
ex: The eventual creation of new states threatened the status quo balance of "Slave" vs. "Free" states. In fact, when the "free" states were able to garner enough electoral votes to elect a President, many if not most people in the South felt they had no choice but to secede.
