12 was the first one, and then the rest of them fell into place. 14 was a big signal I was on the right track.

I was hoping the clue about nuclear war would tell you it was a 20th century person and the Queen Mary mentioned would be George V's wife.

Isnt PBS great?

I knew you must be a fan when you once guessed "Lady Marjorie Bellamy" to one of my clues.

I haven't watched Masterpiece Theater much since about 1990, but was raised on it in the 70s and 80s.

I am certainly a fan of PBS generally, though! I was one of the first generation to watch Sesame Street (so odd that it is almost 40!).

R (feste) Clues 4, 5 and 6 are making me think of Take Me Out to the Ball Game, but I'm not sure if Jack Norworth ever lived in London...

message 1569: by James (new)

James Nevius | 157 comments R - you are correct.

When Jack Norworth and Nora Bayes called it quits, he moved to London and played the vaudeville circuit (so to speak) there to great acllaum.

For those who don't know, Jack Norworth wrote "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in 1908 but didn't see a professional ball game played until the 1940s.

A life peer is (or was?) a member of the House of Lords without the hereditary title. Usually distinguished "retired" politicians.

R (feste) Apologies, I didn't realise how ambiguous the clues were. It might be less confusing with the new clues...

2. Eventually caught and given heavy sentences
3. Have had a movie made about them
4. One of them allegedly had an affair with a life peer
5. From London
6. Siblings

Paula (paulaan) Is it Désirée Clary

Julie Clary - Queen of Naples and Spain

Manuel | 1439 comments Bravo Paula!!!!!1
well done.........even your explanations were spot on.

the only clues I have to explain are #5,8

5. The Hollywood movie was Desiree. Staring Marlon Brando as Napoleon and Jean Simmons as Desiree Clary.
6. The David painting mentioned is indeed the Coronation Painting......Desiree is shown holding the train for Empress Josephine.

James you were very close. Right painting, wrong person.

Ok

1) Born to a farmer
2) Fathered illegitamate child
3) Died at the age of 37
4) Appeared on British Stamps 3 times

Manuel | 1439 comments Question to Marco:

Marco, I have always been curious about how American history is presented in other countries, especially in Britain.
Is our history mentioned much and at what level?
Im especially curious how our Revolution and Civil War are presented.
I read recently that the British are just coming to terms about how to teach the history of their empire, especially on how it relates to colonialism and immigration to modern Britain.

message 1592: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I've been impressed over the years how much all the British know about American history and politics, where in America, only the very well educated and literary know much about Britain's history and politics; the rest know very little--me included.

Our history is much shorter, though, in our defense.
