Jim (jimmaclachlan) I thought of the Mayflower Compact, but I don't know that anyone smoked it & I thought only 40 signed it.

Will Kester | 1047 comments I was all around it but never hit on it. I've never heard of Arbroath smokies. The 10th clue doesn't fit the translation I found, but I think you probably got it, Marco.

The smoked fish clue, for me, turned out to be a red herring. I considered the Declaration of Arbroath and was familiar with Arbroath Abbey, but could not find a way to make the fishy clue work.

Paula, what say you? Marco got it? It has to be right.

What the hell are Arbroath smokies?

message 1509: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) Yep it was the Declaration of Arbroath. Well done Marco

message 1510: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulaan) Arbroath Smokies originated in Auchmithie, a small fishing village a few miles north of Arbroath.
Only haddock can be used to produce an authentic 'Arbroath Smokie'. The resultant golden brown smoked fish.

message 1513: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Marco wrote: "Explanation

1) Controversial; some people believe it's a hoax. Some people believe that there was no moon landing..."

I've heard that. Do they believe the world is flat too? I guess they don't believe in atoms or bacteria, either...

message 1514: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments Ive heard that in some countries, the Moon landing is still considered a hoax, or at least it used to be.

The People's Republic of China never publicly acknowledged the moon landings until the late 70's.

message 1515: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Actually, there are otherwise intelligent people here in the U.S., who think it was all staged; they'll tell you where it was filmed, by whom, why, how and would scoff at the "Flat Earth Society" or anti-evolution beliefs.

I was amazed to watch my grandfather as he watched the moon landing, poised on the edge of his seat. He was convinced that the transfer of mass from here to there would throw the balance off and everything would crash. When it didn't happen, he still watched for changing weather patterns due to the change in the balance of mass. His theory might have been plausable if there were a more siginificant change in mass--much more significant--like to 100000 power, maybe...maybe not.

message 1516: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I have some sympathy with those who say, "Show Me", although I've never resided in Missouri. Still, there's too much going on in the world to be skeptical of everything that one doesn't experience themselves. There's a balance to be struck & I think the idea of a hoax moon landing is a lot less likely than the real thing - if only because the USSR would have loved to make a big deal about it.

message 1517: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Oh yeah, if they'd gotten caught?!!!!

What's the game; who's on first? Oh, Manuel?

message 1518: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments Its been my experience that the larger the number of people involved in a conspiracy or cover up; then the greater chance of discovery.

A perfect example would be; Watergate.
Too many people knew about it, consequently it became harder and harder to put a lid on it.
My point is that if there had been a faked moon landing, it would have taken a HUGE number of people to carry it off successfully; consequently the greater chance of exposure.
