Jim (jimmaclachlan) Sir Thomas Mallory who wrote Le Morte d'Arthur?

message 1459: by Will (last edited Jul 01, 2009 04:30AM) (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Yes, I've been in numerous embassies but didn't win the game. I admit I didn't know we didn't own the one in London; been there many times. Our international headquarters were in London.

Belive it or not my famorite embassy was in Nigeria. I knew everyone there. they were my friends and I was invited to their parties. The staff sargeant in charge of security when we were there moved into CIA operations later. He was the model for an important character in "Shifting Sands."

I have an idea who it might be but I'm leaving on vacation and won't be around to post clues so I'll pass. Have fun.

Old-Barbarossa Jim wrote: "Sir Thomas Mallory who wrote Le Morte d'Arthur?"

It is indeed Thomas Malory.
Le Morte D'Arthur King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table was published by Caxton 14 years after he died.
Tangled up in the build up to the War Of The Roses, was arrested for numerous trumped up charges (and probably a few genuine ones).
A manuscript copy of his work was discovered in 1934 at Winchester College, differing in some parts to the Caxton. Le Morte D'Arthur The Winchester Manuscript
T.H. White based his The Once and Future King cycle on Malory more than any other source, he in turn was used by Disney as the source for The Sword In The Stone.
Rape charges may have been more about the abduction of the woman in medieval English law, and it seems he was involved in rescuing a woman (Joan Smith, both times) from an unhappy forced marriage. Rape in the sense of theft.
Escaped from 2 prisons, once by swimming the moat, then another time he fought his way out.
Check out the very readable Malory The Life and Times of King Arthur's Chronicler for details.

Will Kester | 1047 comments Seems I missed a post again. Darn it. Congrats Jim. I was wrong anyway.

Has anyone watched the new tv show, "Merlin"??? It takes a LOT of license with the legend, it seems.

Yes, going sailing. It's a good time to get away with 4th of July and everyone leaving town or planning long weekend celebrations.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You got it, Marco. Your turn!

I happened to read a story about him & his reaction to the Internet. He was saying it was a distraction about the same time Twitter messages were all the news anyone was getting out of Iran. Full story is here:
http://www.networkworld.com/columnist...

Imagination! was the fanzine that published his first story.

"Libraries raised me. I don’t believe in colleges and universities. I believe in libraries because most students don’t have any money. When I graduated from high school, it was during the Depression and we had no money. I couldn’t go to college, so I went to the library three days a week for 10 years." is a quote from this article about his fight for a local library recently.

Read this: http://www.raybradbury.com/inhiswords...
about how Mr. Electrico got him writing. Pretty wild piece, in his own words.

Mind you I don't know if it was copper hulled.
French East Indiaman built in 1765, given to the Colonies by France. Captained by a Scotsman (JPJ).

Paula (paulaan) Thanks Manuel - it just seemed to easy to be correct and clues 2,6 and 13 foxed me.
2 - I thought she only had 2 children and 6 and 13 I did not get even though Vivian Leigh is one of my favorite actresses.

Here are my first clues:

(1) A Document
(2) Some say an early form of political propaganda
(3) Probably earliest document of its type
(4) Agreed by 51 people
(5) Document used a "template" for other famous versions

message 1495: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I thought of the Declaration of Independence but it was signed by more than 51 people--58 I think. The Magna Carta needed one signature--the king. It took a lot of people to get him to sign it and then he reneged on it, but 51 doesn't work. Hmmmm....
