Manuel | 1439 comments Not the biggest nor fastest ship. But became a favorite of pre war travelers.
Made a lot of money for her owners.

During WWII she was a beloved troop carrier.

After WWII her 3rd funnel was removed and she again became a favorite with travelers to and from Europe.

Her sisters :
the Normandie and the Paris
were both victims of fire. In both cases too much water was pumped in to fight the flames, both ships capsized while moored to the pier.

A pale ale, if that helps. English brewery.

Will Kester | 1047 comments Edmund Burke? Irish by birth, I think. Was a paymaster, twice. Not exiled that I remember. Don't know of an ale named for him; just a guess. Certainly wrote some books that have had impacts on many levels of conservative philosophy.

Manuel | 1439 comments I was going to say Thomas Paine, but I cant get all the clues to fit.

This sounds so familiar, Im fighting the temptation to look it up in wikepedia.

message 1426: by Old-Barbarossa (new)

Old-Barbarossa It is indeed Tom Paine.
Which clues are giving you the problem?

message 1427: by Manuel (last edited Jun 29, 2009 11:17AM) (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments Oh wow, that was a guess on my part.

I didnt think
clues #1 and #5, or #7 fit him.

Of course I was just using memory and trying not to use Wikepedia, so I could be wrong.

message 1428: by Old-Barbarossa (last edited Jun 29, 2009 12:06PM) (new)

Old-Barbarossa 1) Wanted to be buried in a Quaker cemetry in New York, but ended up buried on a farm he had. Bones Dug up by the radical Willian Cobbett to be reintered in England, but were lost.
2) Sacked for stamping goods he'd not inspected and for aggitating for better terms for excise officers.
5) Much more famous in France and America than in England.
7) Father was Joseph Pain(note no "e") a Quaker and farmer from Thetford...also was a stay maker (clue 9).
Clues 13 and 14 along with what would have bee 15 (French by decree...) are on a memorial to him in Paris.
Oh, and 12): http://www.harveys.org.uk/bottledbeer...
Very nice...
Also: Thomas Paine

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I remembered the place I was thinking of with a 999 year lease. It was the Crystal Palace, the exhibition hall in London. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the rest of the clues.

message 1448: by Will (last edited Jun 30, 2009 06:56AM) (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Good job, Barbarossa.

We're moving from my favorite part of London to the gay district? I used to belong to the American Club in London. I've been to the embassy several times; not since security became such an issue, though. The move must be from the Bush/Cheney terrorist paranoia era--maybe it's just because of the parking fees.

message 1449: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments Bravo Barbarossa!!!
Yes the American Embassy in London

Its the only embassy not owned by the United States.
The site is owned by the Dukes of Westminister aka the Grosvenor family.

The own the area around Grosvenor Square as well as Bellgrave Square in Mayfair. Most other residents have 99 year leases. A great source of wealth for the Grosvenors.

I figured the Tangier clue would probably give it away, since it was mentioned in Obama's speech in Egypt.

message 1450: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments I almost used our friend Will as a clue. Though he had not actually said he had ever been to our embassy in London.

I was going to say he has probably set foot in a quite a few of these....
