Will Kester | 1047 comments You got it. Just in time; I have to work, now. Have fun.

message 1004: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You posted so many clues & so fast! No wonder I got it.

Now I have to come up with one. Give me a bit.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm not sure when I'm going to get back on. Hopefully later tonight, so I'll leave another clue to chew on.

2. Accomplished surfer
3. Known for using old weapons in battle.
4. Qualified to jump at 40.
5. Defended a Jewish medical convoy from an Arab ambush.
6. Credited with capturing 42 men single handedly (may have had 1 person helping him).

message 1008: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments That must be it. Fighting Jack reportedly was disappointed WWII ended so abruptly. "It could have lasted ten more years if the Americans hadn't intervened."

If I were you, Marco; I'd take it and start another game. Jim won't mind; he's working, as I should be.

message 1009: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Never mind; it's past five where Jim is. He should be back to confirm soon. I know that's gotta be it.

"Old weapons" were bow and arrow.

message 1010: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You guys figured it out. Sorry I couldn't get back to the computer last night.

message 1011: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments It's not an opera and doesn't fit Blue Alien that I can imagine but the 3rd Act of Hamlet deals with madness. Just a wild guess.

message 1012: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments The fifth element is Boron, or ether, or a musical group, or....

Blue Alien is a musical group, or a UFO web site, or....

An opera?

message 1013: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Maybe space opera. Robert William Cole's "The Struggle for Empire: A Story of the Year 2236."

message 1014: by Will (last edited May 16, 2009 11:57AM) (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Sir Walter Scott wrote "Ivanhoe"

Gaetano Donizetti wrote a LOT of operas; I'm not familiar most of them; certainly none with a blue alien in it.

Someone smarter than me...help.

message 1015: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Lucia di Lammermoor

Someone else will have to get this one - I'm OK on Walter Scott but clueless on opera.

message 1017: by Will (last edited May 16, 2009 12:27PM) (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I'm not well trained in opera, either; can you tell?

'Lucia di Lammermoor' was adapted from a Scott novel, I think.

I have no idea what "blue alien" has to do with anything.

message 1018: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments I think its from the movie the Fifth Element

message 1019: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Ah, the movie...never heard of it. Is there a blue alien in it?

message 1020: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Sorry, but I'm having laptop problems. I'm sending from my PC but it's very awkward to use on the internet.

Ahah! I would never have guessed the connection.

I'll post something in a minute. Not sure how often I'll be able to check back but will do my best.

message 1021: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Will emailed his apologies 11 hours ago. He can't seem to get back into this topic on the computer he has now. He says he'll have his regular one back tomorrow & we should all carry on without him.

Anyone else want to go or wait for Will tomorrow?

Sorry for the delay in relaying. I've been working.

That's why I said it probably wasn't.

message 1031: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Occupation? Not Seabiscuit. He was a racehorse, just like Secretariat. Both very good. It's a shame they can't run longer, but the handicapping gets too heavy & they're worth much more as a stud. Mine That Bird won't have that problem, of course. That's a worse shame, but no one thought he'd be worth keeping as a stud. They're a pain.

Jet Pilot?

message 1038: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Good guess, I'd say, Susanna except Jet Pilot won the Derby in (I think) 1947. The "Jet" line continued to "Go Jet" from "Go Man Go" and Jet Pilot stock to become one of the outsanding race horses of all time and is buried on the grounds of Buena Suerta Vet Clinic, one of the two owners of Mine That Bird.

Rachel Alexandra's foals will go for what? A million dollars a piece? Half a million? Stud fees are cheaper.

Anyway, I doubt it's Jet Pilot. I'd have to research it but I'm leaving on vacation. I have my laptop back now. Sorry. My PC is so loaded with financial stuff it's very cumbersome on the net. Have fun, all.

message 1039: by Jim (new)

message 1040: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I would have said Assault, who won Belmont and Preakenss in '46 but was buried on King Ranch; that's not near you. Battleship? Hmmmm.... brb

message 1041: by Will (last edited May 19, 2009 12:47PM) (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Never mind. My memory sucks. Assault won the Derby, too. Capot was born in '46. Ran in the Derby also. Won Belmont and Preakness. I was thinking there was a horse with a battleship name, but I guess I was wrong. Man o' War goes too far back. My grandfather had a print of Man o' War over his fireplace. Awesome horse. I give up.

message 1042: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Will got it, even if he doesn't think so.

Man O' War is the correct horse.

message 1043: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments Wow
I thought Man O War was much much earlier than 1947.

Congrats Will

He was. He died at 30 in 1947.

What a great horse!

message 1045: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I don't get "Remembrance by Hazeltine." That was a reference to "Man o' War?"

I have a few hours before I leave, so I'll do a quickie.

Another Horse, while we're on the subject. A hint, then the clues. This horse was the sire of my stepfather's stud, to which I bred my mare, Sugar, when I was a boy.

A great horse:

1. Originally named Buttons. (I named my favorite gelding that to honor this horse)

2. Sired many winners, and two Hall of Fame horses.

3. Originally purchased as a weanling for $150.

4. Double-bred Traveler

message 1046: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments 5. Registration number usually included with his name.

message 1047: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I may be wrong about two Hall of Famers; it could be more, maybe four. Poco Bueno was one of them. My mare, Sugar, was from the Poco Bueno line.

message 1048: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments (I'm doing this one from memory, not from research, so take it with a grain of salt)

6. A common misconception is that this stallion came from America's largest ranch.

message 1049: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I refuse to attempt an answer on the grounds that I don't have time to do another game right now.

Man O'War's grave is marked with a statue by Herbert Haseltine. Oops! I misspelled it when I did the clues. Oh well, that's why there were multiples.

message 1050: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments You know the answer...cheater. am heading for the airport; will check in before my flight.
