Old-Barbarossa Did she receive the Croix de Guerre and was she prone to wearing fruit skirts?
If so I agree whole heartedly with clue 14...
That was the giveaway if it is Josephine Baker.

Will Kester | 1047 comments I never heard of the very famous "Josephine Baker Beach."

When it comes to callipygian, all us guys are shallow.

Wikipedia: "Baker bore only one child, stillborn in 1941...."

Manuel wrote: "Twelve children." Maybe she was one of twelve children; I don't know.

Will Kester | 1047 comments ahah! And the beach is where?

message 811: by Manuel (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments congrats Barbarossa
Yes Josephine Baker

La Plage Josephine Baker
recreated every year on the banks of the Seine in Paris,
located next to the Piscine Josephine Baker

message 812: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments La Piscine Josephine Baker is a swimming pool. La Plage is an artificial beach on the Seine. I'll give to to you, though. Threw me wayyyy off at the beginning...tricky.

message 814: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments actually, La Piscine Josephine Baker is a barge with a swimming pool in it, on the Seine. It has a retractable roof for summer use and is open year 'round. It's been in service since about 2006 or so. La Plage is recreated each summer. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

message 815: by Manuel (last edited Apr 23, 2009 03:23PM) (new)

Manuel | 1439 comments you are 100% correct

the beach was just going to be a one time thing, but Parisians loved it so much, they recreate it every summer

Old-Barbarossa OK.
Another thing from me.
1) In London
2) A lot smaller than it's name suggests.
3) About 1/4 what it used to be.
4) Cursed.

And it's not the £ sterling...

message 821: by Will (last edited Apr 24, 2009 07:46AM) (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments The Crown Jewels were virtually non-existant after Cromwell's rule. Some were restored but not all. One-fourth? Probably not. There are many curses on jewels, but not on the Crown Jewels that I know of.

King Tut's exhibit was reduced for London, when Egypt refused to allow the "death mask" to leave its home, but that wouldn't be by 3/4. It fits "cursed" though.

The London Globe newspaper?

5) Various countries claim it should be theirs. The conflicting claims one excuse for the Brits keeping it.

Old-Barbarossa Susanna wrote: "This isn't the Koh-i-Noor, is it?"

Ooooh, you're good.
And that's you getting it with my rubbish maths for clue 3...clue 7 gives the reduction in size and it's now neared 1/8th, not 1/4, sorry.

message 827: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I thought less than half of that was cut away to make it shinier.

message 828: by Old-Barbarossa (new)

Old-Barbarossa Started at 793 carats and was butchered in the 1500s down to 186.
Then when the Brits got it they again cut it down to 109 carats.
Koh I Noor means Mountain Of Light. Hence clue 2.
It's fictional "liberation" is recounted in Flashman and the Mountain of Light with a heap of good stuff in the notes about the real Hx.
