Will Kester | 1047 comments You're warm, Marco. What was the event?

message 653: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I could accept the arrows, I suppose. The event was when the British renamed New Amsterdam to New York City.

If Geri ever shows up, we can let her have a turn, but for now...Marco? What yah got for us?

I'm still out here lurking...just busy with work. It will be a while before I can do a proper one. You guys are really good at this game.

Will Kester | 1047 comments You were the one, Geri, who solved that toughest one we'd had. You won the right to do one when you want to. In the meantime...Marco, what kind of clues are those? That could be my neighbor.

message 657: by Will (last edited Apr 04, 2009 04:09PM) (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments It's definitely my neighbor. I win! Just kidding. Don't tell my neighbor what I said.

Manuel | 1439 comments LOL

These clues remind me of my days in a music store.

I would often get the following request......

"Can you help me?"
"Im looking for that singer....you know the one......
She sings that song thats on the radio all the time,..... you know the one.....
She's cute..................and, oh yeah!!!!!
...........She's black"..........

message 659: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments Okay, my mistake. Geri! It's your turn!

message 660: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I'm tellin' yah; it's my neighbor. Not sure what she did to MLK, Gandhi or Lincoln, though. She's old enough to have known them.

Please explain the body odor clue

message 663: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments The way Marco does it, it doesn't have to be the person, just someone he knew, or mentioned, or read about, or.... Obama definitely isn't a single mother. He probably knew my neighbor, thus the body odor clue. I'm curious about the "Tata the primate" clue.

Was anyone else knocked off Goodreads this afternoon? I was. "We cannot connect to that page at this time. We will investigate it." something like that on almost all threads.

A server going AWOL according to Otis.

Great, obscure clues, Marco. Wish I'd had more time to look. I was no where close, but did wind up on a couple of interesting tangents. Wish I could recall what they were, but it's been busy.

Don't yah hate it when servers go AWOL? Sounds like my lunch yesterday. "Now where did that server go?" I was forced to drink water instead of tea.

Okay, I gotta win one soon so I can use the most obscure clues imaginable: Woke early one morning; Was late to work, once; etc. This is gonna be fun.

Gotta go to the dentist today, though.

Oh, Manuel...everyone is snubbed the Belgians.

Will Kester | 1047 comments I'm beginning to get a feel for who this might be; I'll think on it.

Meantime...I actually like Belgium and the people, once I have the chance to get to know them. It takes work, but it's worth it.

I say ugly things too often about all people all over the world. Why? I'm not sure. The thinnest skinned people in the world, in my experience, are Americans. I'll say something about us being ignorant and THE OUTCRY! I should quit it, but I'm old and set in my ways. I say terrible things about Iranis, but have several very good friends from there and some who live there, still. The most picked on people in the Middle East, in my experience, are the Yemenese. That's because they deserve it. Oops! I did it again.

Back to our regularly scheduled program, still in progress.

Will Kester | 1047 comments I thought it might be Alfonso, for the clash with El Cid, played by Charlton Heston. I can't make "composed beautiful love songs" fit, however, and if my memory is correct, he had two siblings, one sister and one brother, whom he outlived, and left no legitimate heirs.

Oh well, have fun.

message 685: by Will (last edited Apr 08, 2009 11:59AM) (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments I don’t watch movies very often. I’ve seen very few of Charlton Heston’s movies, but it’s probably the most revealing clue. So, I looked up all the historic characters Heston had ever played, and pondered with whom his character might have clashed.

Apparently he played God in a movie, but I wrote that one off, quickly, as I did John the Baptist. He played Henry Hooker, an Arizona rancher who befriended Billy the Kid. Nah. He played Josef Mengele’s father, but I can’t imagine it fitting any of the clues, really. He played Marc Antony several times.

Belgium and Germany were either not countries or fledgling countries during the time of Antony, but that’s a possibility. Antony clashed with several people, Cleopatra, Brutus, etc, but I don’t think it’s that time period.

He played Andrew Jackson, who may have been snubbed by German and Belgium Royalty; I don’t know. He played William Clark, who clashed with Lewis. He played Cardinal Richelieu but I don’t think mother-in-law would apply. He played Henry VIII. Henry clashed with popes and wives, and might be the answer, but love songs and conflicts? Not sure, but decided...nope.

I seriously considered Michelangelo who wrote love sonnets. I couldn’t force him into the other clues, however. His clashes were with clergy and Medici. Gen. Chse. Gordon didn’t fit, even close. We’ve eliminated Alfonso of El Cid fame. So…

I have no idea.

Oh, and I looked at rare stamps and found no one who matched up with any Heston character conflicts of my knowledge. I'm not saying there isn't one, just that I didn't find it.

If this helps anyone solve it; help yourself. Not much help, I fear.

Actually, Will, Henry VIII was quite the musician. "To the Tower With Her!" made me laugh, though!

Henry VIII did right love songs.

He wrote one to Anne Bolyen
Supposedly; he asked her what she thought of it?.

message 691: by Will (new)

Will Kester | 1047 comments For those who might get confused; Susanna was refering to something I had edited out because it would be someone who had a conflict with Henry VIII, but the line "To the Towers with her," as a love song was kind of cute. Thanks for noticing, Susanna. I don't get many good ones. Henry VIII did write love songs? He did manage to seduce Anne Bolyn and her sister; maybe so. I thought he used more devious devices.

Head-quarters? That would be quarters where heads are stored? Who'd want to occupy that? someone solve this tonight, please, so I can sleep.

You can listen to clips of Henry's music here: http://www.amazon.com/All-Goodly-Spor... .

I have to assume that songs with titles like "En Vray Amore," "Alas What Shall I Do For Love?" and "If Love Now Reigned" are love songs.

Adultery? What kind of clue is that? Throw a dart and hit an historic person who committed adultery. Unsatisfactory, loveless marriage? Just throw a dart.
