What do you like to read besides Jane Austen?

I love to read all the sequels, prequels and adaptations of Austen - good and bad; I love to read historical romantic fiction (especially the regency period but also medieval period); I like the occasional mystery; biography and history; and I love to read books about knitting (my other large obsession).

I also love anything about Austen or her characters written by other authors. My favorites are books by the Bronte sisters and Louisa May Alcott,plus any other classic romance. I also like to read the historical fiction of Rider H. Haggard,and all books about ballet,fiction or not.

I read some Austen adaptations mostly those by Amanda Grange.I love the Bronte's and I also read Clean Regency Romance,YA and Adult Fantasy and some but very little Sci-fi,poems and other classics.I also read books about cat care,fish keeping,and some other genres.

I like Wilkie Collins, Edith Wharton, Dickens, Conan Doyle. I loved "To Kill a Mockingbird", Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go" and the suspense/horror novels of Thomas Tryon - "Harvest Home" was a real chiller. In mystery fiction, I have enjoyed Aileen Schumacher, Walter Mosley's "Easy Rawlins" series, Elmore Leonard's "South Florida" books and Tim Hallinan's "Simeon Grist" series.

I enjoy a wide range of books: fantasy, particularly Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series and George R. R. Martina's Game of Thrones; disaster novels like Jaws; also pandemic novels; romance novels, particularly regencies by Mary Balogh and Georgette Heyer; some mysteries; some thrillers; science fiction; Jane Austen sequels; science books; books about Dimitry Shostakovich; books by Chelsie Caine and Carl Hiassen and a variety of other authors.

Well, aside from the whole Austen world, I try to be as eclectic in my taste as I can. I divide my reading time between new books and classics, and I try lots of different genres--romance, historical, mystery, fantasy. The only one I'll never read much in is horror. I do the same with my non-fiction reading too.

I'm into a lot of stuff right now. My current favorite is Divergent, by Veronica Roth, and I'm into the whole dystopian worlds (i.e. Hunger Games). I also like L.M. Montgomery, P&P fanfiction, and historical romances (i.e. The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society).

I love young adult novels, historical fiction and anything Austen inspired (as long as it has good reviews and can be well recommended)

I will read just about anything, but my current favorite among contemporary writers is Lisa Lutz. You have got to read her Spellman Files series. The protagonist, Izzy Spellman, is part Nancy Drew, part Dirty Harryl; she's definitely flawed but entirely likeable. Her entire family is twisted and disfunctional but lovable at the same time.

Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen detective series is a good read, too.

Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair was clever (lots of my favorite characters from fiction are involved) but his more recent additions to the series were lame.

For me, well crafted characters are a must if I am going to enjoy a book. I read lots of different things but tend to prefer something with a little romance or at least a developing relationship between the main characters. I like historical, science fiction, suspenseful, paranormal, biographical, or reality-based fiction. I challenge myself to read 7 classics each year and love it when I read one and think "I know why this is a classic." Honestly, some leave me wondering. Some of my favorite non-Austen writers are Diana Gabaldon, Suzanne Brockmann, Jodi Picoult, Luanne Rice, Christina Dodd, Deeanne Gist and Catherine Coulter.

Agatha Christie, Colin Cotterill, Minette Walters, Margaret Maron, Janet Evanovich, notice the trend?
I loved the Stephanie Barron series too.
Larry Niven, Alan Dean Foster, Philip Kerr and an absolute ton of suggested books of all types that I rarely finish.
