Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 198 comments Can someone please answer my question? Does anyone have any actual evidence that simply adding up big numbers of followers made up primarily of other writers, results in book sales or brand recognition? I've been cautious in my tweets, and in any "tagging" on Amazon as it seems to invite skeptics to say -- "this is self-generated, market hype". I'd like to know that I'm wrong. it would be so much easier.

message 175: by Jade (new)

Jade Varden (jadevarden) | 42 comments I can show you hard evidence if you like. Send me a private message here on Goodreads and I can send you screen caps to back up what I'm about to tell you.

I work hard to build up the number of followers I have and I work hard on tweeting. Generally, I tweet links to my books and to my blog 4-5 times a day throughout the day. But some days, things happen and I get busy and I don't get my tweets ready and end up tweeting nothing. On those days, I don't get nearly as many hits on my blog. I can look at my blog stats and literally see a steep valley marking the day that I wasn't tweeting. I also use a program to schedule some of my tweets in advance, and I can look at the report there showing how many times the links I tweeted got clicked. When I don't tweet, I can see another sharp dip in this graph showing the day where no one is clicking on my links.

Does it translate into sales and can I prove it? I'm not going to show you (or anyone) my sales figures, but yes I've noticed a difference. I definitely sell more when I'm tweeting regularly. However, my sales are still subject to peaks and valleys that seem independent of my Twitter efforts. I'm still trying to figure out what works and what doesn't when it comes to selling more books. I CAN tell you that tweeting noticeably increases my blog traffic, my Facebook fans and the number of sign-ups I have on giveaways because I check all of that stuff. I CANNOT tell you for certain that all of this automatically equals huge books sales, because it doesn't...but it does seem to equal SOME book sales.

message 176: by Richard (new)

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 198 comments Do you actually tweet content beyond just book passages and live links? I generally unfollow lots of other authors when all they do is send out book hype. My own desk is pretty cluttered as it is, and I don't have a lot of time to wade through other writers' promos unless they also carry something of interest. Do you use a particular mix strategy?

message 177: by Jade (new)

Jade Varden (jadevarden) | 42 comments Richard wrote: "Do you actually tweet content beyond just book passages and live links? I generally unfollow lots of other authors when all they do is send out book hype. My own desk is pretty cluttered as it is, ..."

I do, yes. I try to interact with other people, particularly if they've tweeted to me. I also sometimes tweet quotes from TV shows I like and sometimes I tweet about what I'm watching on TV or what I'm out doing. Most TV shows pop up hashtags so you can talk about the show while you're watching, and I love that.

message 178: by Amy (new)

Amy Martin | 52 comments Hi all,

I use my Twitter for everyday musings and also to tweet about my new book, In Your Dreams. I'm at https://twitter.com/ThatAmyMartin. I do follow back.

message 179: by Richard (new)

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 198 comments I like to stay in touch with readers and other writers, if we write in similar genres, but I find that when an authors tweets are mostly self-promotion, I un-follow pretty fast. My Twitter in-box is always really full and it's hard to give it enough time every day.

message 180: by Mike (new)

Mike Miller (mikeemiller) | 15 comments Here's mine. I'll follow you back IF you aren't an auto-tweeting machine or an incessant self-promoter. Sorry. Don't mean to sound harsh, but I want to be honest. :-)

Alex (alexlukeman) | 63 comments Hi All, tweeting is a strange thing. When I have a free promo, I tweet to a lot of places and people about it. When I get an interesting follower I will often make a friendly comment or at least a thank you. Sometimes not, because I'm really busy. I usually follow back, unless it's someone trying to sell me penny stocks or whatever. It's a random thing for me.

I appreciate a good rant now and then--especially one that hits the nail on the head. I, too, get annoyed with authors bleating, I mean tweeting, about their book every other minute, though I don't mind it occasionally. (actually appreciate it, since I discover new books that way) As a general rule, for me, the more hashtags in a tweet, the less I want to read it. A quick tweet funny story about remodeling your kitchen or camping with the kid's scout troop--I'm all over that. Twelve tweets in a row (in one day!) about your amazing awesome book--forgetaboutit.

I had 1-2 blue pages of non-existance and one or two people were not on this list that posted on page 4 and 5 so they need to be added... (Like escape the arroyo)

Ken Consaul | 180 comments I did the blog/website route and tweeted a lot. I tried not to flog my site too much and tried to interact more with other people. Using the widgets in WordPress I was able to see where the hits on my site came from and whether they clicked through to the point of sale. I was able to actually attribute one referral from twitter that went to Amazon and bought the book.

I met some people and we keep in touch but not so much by tweeting as by e-mail and private messages here on GR. I would spend my time joining some groups here on GR and participating. I've made friends and done something towards establishing myself as a 'brand'. I've received some great reviews from readers here and that helps sales.

Your time, IMHO, is better spent here rather than shouting at the world 140 characters at a time. Twitter is like being in a crowded bar with everyone trying to be heard over the background noise.

FB? Set up a page to promote my work and next thing I know I've been friended by family and the purpose of setting it up is gone.

GR and KDP Select is working for me and its a lot easier than adding hashtags.

Let me add I am also a woodworker and belong to a woodworking forum. I can't say how much but I've received a lot of support, and I assume, sales from my ten years there. I even got my cover design done for Createspace done for free by a friend there. Reach out into other interests and occasionally drop in you write.
