Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Is anyone else participating in the Goodreads Reading Challenge?

I've put myself down for 40 books, but I hope to exceed this, so may adjust the number later in the year.

message 2: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 8 comments yeah, I'm going to, last year I read about 30 books (but re-read others as well), so this year I think I'll going to aim for about 32, but also hoping to extend this. I would put a higher number but I've got AS level exams coming up so most of my time will be spent on studying soon.

message 3: by Cat (new)

Cat (dodgeremerson) I have twenty-five chosen for this year. We'll see, but I'm hoping to surpass this by at least half. Last year was muy busy, so reading was a rare treat, sadly.

message 4: by Kat (new)

Kat (elfkat) | 5 comments I put myself down for 125 since I read 137 last year but am hoping to get another book of stories done.

message 5: by Julia (new)

Julia (wiccanlady) | 3 comments I am down for 75, though most likely I will read more.

Dish Wanderer (philologistatwork) | 45 comments I have out myself down for 30 ,hoping to read more :)

Dragonflydreamer68 | 18 comments I dropped mine down to 45 from 65 because I hope to be working soon and thus less time to read.

message 8: by Kouk (new)

Kouk I challenged myself to read 100 books this year!

Good luck everyone!

message 9: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I have put myself down for 160 this year. I can always make it higher as the year goes along. Last year I kept raising it as the months went along.

Happy reading everyone!

message 10: by Slmstanley (new)

Slmstanley | 8 comments I have no idea how many books I read in a year...it's a lot. Maybe this year I'll actually keep a running total.

message 11: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Slmstanley: The reading challenge here at GoodReads is a great way to keep track of what you've read. I find it helpful in keeping me on track.

message 12: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I also find that it makes me push myself a little bit. Last year when the little ticker would tell me I was behind or on track, was fun.

message 13: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6 comments Hello Everyone. I am new so that is why I may not be familiar to any of you.
I just read this thread and boy I am shocked as to how many books some of you read in a year. I thought I would try and do one a month so I have 12. Now you make me feel I should up it a little more. Maybe like 20. Any ways, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know I also was doing the challenge.

Sue

message 14: by Emelie (new)

Emelie I've challenged myself to read 100 books. I like the way the challenge makes me try harder and I love how it says that I'm x books ahead or that I'm behind and it makes me read even more and more.

message 15: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Hello Susan and welcome to the challenge, I'm sure you will outdo yourself though, because, as Emelie points out the little reminders are a great spur.

message 16: by JoEllen (new)

JoEllen (msp-webb) | 5 comments I am new here, also. I joined the challenge mid-year last year and gave myself a goal of (maybe) 45, then increased it twice to 50, then 60. In December I re-read The Dragonriders of Pern, which is actually a 3-in-one (bought it that way because it was cheaper on my Nook), so I don't feel too bad that I ended up with 58 books on my list for 2011...I know that I read far more than that.
For 2012 I am starting with a goal of 60 books, but I will definately try to increase that to 100.
I am also trying to increase my walking in order to get healthier, so it's possible that I am working at cross-purposes to myself, lol.

message 17: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6 comments Ok, I didn't feel right with my whole big 12 so I changed it to 20. Make it a little bit of a challenge any ways. (To me it is a challenge since I can't "hold" even the nook very long due to my shoulder and arm/hand and some nerve issues.)So I will see how this goes. Who knows, I may surprise myself and even change it again.

message 18: by Ancestral (new)

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) Ah, well audio books can count, too. About a third of mine from last year's challenge were audio books.

message 19: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6 comments I thought of that. However for some reason it isn't the same. Dean Koontz sent me a set of audio (and hard covered which were signed by him and sit in a safe spot on display and no one is allowed to touch them...LOL) but listening to books (to me) just looses something. I may just try again because there is no sense to buy them in e-books when I have them in audio right there waiting to be listened to.

message 20: by Emelie (new)

Emelie Good luck, Susan! But remember it is not winning the challenge that is important, rather that it makes you read more and have fun. :)

i think the same way about audio books, I've only listened to one full audio book which was the life of Lee Evan which was really good because it was him reading it making it more funnier but I've only listened to half of a fiction book (vampire) and it didn't appeal to me, i think its because the accents of the people reading. when i read it the accents sound perfect to me but listening hardly ever sounds right. also i sometimes think it takes the pleasure away from reading and the feeling you get when you finish a book but that might just be me! :/

message 22: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6 comments Emelie, Yes, you are correct...it isn't about winning the challenge at all. Like everyone here says, it is about setting a goal for yourself. I just didn't know what to set it at as I haven't read in so long I haven't a clue what I can read in a year. I just wanted a realistic one for myself. I thought a book a month was good for me but really, I think I can do better than that in some months. I know that once the baby (my grandchild) who will be born in Aug. comes I may not be reading much. (I will be watching her/him while mom and dad are at work). Then again, I may have way more time to read, who knows, the baby might sleep a lot (unlike mine did). Any ways, I figure 20 is really a good one for me to start the year out with. I am just so thrilled to read again.

Sarah, I am glad to hear I am not the only one that "looses something" when listening to audio books. I never thought of the voice/accent. That could be it or at least part of it.

message 23: by Emelie (new)

Emelie Susan, glad you're thrilled to read and hope you'll get the time to read as much as you want! Congrats to getting a grandchild - how fun!

I can't listen to audio books either. I can't grasp the story and it doesn't stick in my head and I will loose concentration and not hearing the story at all. Those few audio books I've tried, I was also really annoyed by the narrator. I think that I just want to create the voices, accents myself.
