Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I love the name Jackson. If I ever have a boy, that will be his name. I don't know of any characters in any book that I've read that have this name specifically, but one of my favorite books - and favorite characters- is Jack Sawyer from The Talisman by Stephen King. His twinner (essentially his personification in a parallel world) is named Jason.

Jack + Jason = Jackson! :)

message 152: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I came up with Jackson because I really like the name Jack, but I don't want to use Johnathan or just Jack.

message 153: by Lorna (new)

Lorna | 15 comments My name is Lorna and my mother named me after a character in a book - she doesn't remember what book it was. The name was actually made up by the author of Lorna Doone. It means love lorn. Do you think are personalities fit our names or our names fit our personalities?

message 154: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) My friend Christy named her middle son after a character in Fight Club A Novel; Tyler and his middle name is his dad's first name.

message 155: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (CherylsPearls) In January 1973, I named my daughter Jennifer; it is the English variation of Gwenhwyfar (Guinevere). I always loved reading about King Arthur, and that is where I got it. I didn't know even one Jennifer at the time. Jennifer ended up being the most popular name that year and several years after! Evidently, there must have been someone on a soap opera or an actress at the time named Jennifer. There were 5 Jennifer's in her 3rd grade class! Who knew? lol

message 156: by JSou (new)

JSou I loved the name of Tristran Thorn from when I first read Stardust. My ex-husband thought it was wierd, but we compromised and named my son Treston.

message 157: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I don't have kids yet but I know I want to name my first daughter - Marleigh Eyren - Marleigh because my dad's name is Mark and my mom's middle name is Leigh and Eyren because I love Jane Eyre and my best friends name is Erin.

I have two dogs named from Greek Mythology - Pandora and Phoebe - my name is Greek in origin, Pandora because in college my friends and I nicknamed the suite we lived in the "sin bin" and Pandora released the sins from the box, and Phoebe was a titan (the gods that came before those we know most about) of the moon which relates to the meaning of my name in Greek and she was also the name of a character on one of my favorite shows ever Friends.

My best friend named her animals after sex and the city characters - Carrie and Samantha cats - and Mr. Big or Biggie a dog (Phoebe's brother).

I went to school with people with really bizarre names...Jaczar, Shittall, Thuy (pronounced Twee), so many others I can't think of now - I also knew someone in college who was student teacher and had a student named Female.

message 158: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (avila01) I really liked the name Isabella after reading Henry James's "Portrait of a Lady." The name's so popular right now, though, that I probably won't use it.

A good friend of mine is named Brandon Scott. It was the name of the main character of a romance novel his mom read while she was pregnant with him.

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments I don't think I know anyone who admitted to being named after a book character. My mother tells me she wanted to name me Amy for Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit
but obviously that didn't work out.

Stephanie | 413 comments A woman at my works daughters name is Novalee like the girl in Where The Heart Is.

message 161: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 413 comments Cynthia your daughters name is soooooo pretty!!!

message 162: by Irene (last edited Apr 24, 2009 10:57PM) (new)

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments I did once name a cat Torey for Torey L. Hayden
Since I don't have any kids maybe a cat could count.
But she's an author but mmm her books are nonfiction and she does appear in her own books...
I highly recommend Murphy's Boy

message 163: by Lizzi (new)

Lizzi Crystal (fortelleren) I love naming kids (and pets) after characters in literature! I like names that can be for several characters, too - like, I named one of my dogchildren Anastasia, for the Russian princess of the fairy tale, but also for Anne Elliot in Jane Austen's Persuasion (one of my favorite novels). My second dogchild is Idyllwild, which comes from one of my novels, and my third and fourth dogs are Viola and Olivia, from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, and again from one of my novels. A cat I used to have was Galadriel (Lord of the Rings), and the dog we're getting next week will be Titania, the name of Shakespeare's fairy queen.

I plan to name a future son Rohan from Lord of the Rings (the name of a place, rather than a character), and a future daughter Evangeline from the Irish myth.

GracieKat | 864 comments I didn't name my son after a book name but I did take his name from a movie. His name is Connor Neil. Connor is from the movie The Highlander (with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery) and Neil is in honor of his two grandfathers, both of them named Neil. I did want Lestat, Marius, Dante or Julian but my husband didn't like them.

Wendy | 246 comments Petra X wrote: "I had a friend called Wendy, not such an unusual name but she was called after the Wendy in Peter Pan (which actually was the first instance of the name anyway). "

My name is Wendy and my brother is Peter. My mother loved Peter Pan!!!

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments I had some friends name their son after a comic book character. He is Damian.

Becky wrote: "Who would name their child VAGINA?? Oh my goodness. That's terrible! Poor kid is in for a really, really tough life. My guess is that she's waiting at the courthouse on her 18th birthday to get THA..."

Autumn (and this thread) reminds me of my favourite story as a kid 'Princess September'. For a while my doll was called that but I got over wanting give that name to my child .

message 168: by Stacey (new)

Stacey | 6 comments Although my children are named after family members, I had more literary freedom when naming pets...
I once had a male black lab named Sawyer, a yellow female lab named Becky, and a male cat at the same time named Huckleberry. (They have all died. :( )
I currently own another male black lab named Atticus and a goofy, gray, male kitten named Dill.

message 169: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments yeah animals don't come back and get you for the names you give them. But I'll bet there are few Bambis out there who aren't happy with their mothers.

message 170: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (sherylmarasi) | 93 comments I named my dog after a character in a movie...does that count?

message 171: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments I have a friend named Cressida, after the character in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

message 172: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Sherry - I say yes about your dog, so let's hear it. On that same note, I just rescued a kitten on Saturday and named her Bella!

message 173: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (sherylmarasi) | 93 comments Bella = Beautiful in Italian :)

I can't remember the movie...i think it was called Double Jeopardy (?). Anyway, the kid's name was Mattie and I fell in love w/it :)

message 174: by Maliades (new)

Maliades Yes, I do know someone - my mom! She named me Jocelyn, after the book titled Jocelyn, by John Galsworthy. I have the book, haven't read it. Lame, I know... I should read that ASAP. I think I tried to as a teen, and it just totally didn't get me interested, so I never picked it up again. Anyway, that book isn't even listed here on GR! But you can find info on Galsworthy on wikipedia (I'd link but am html-challenged).

message 175: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments My mother loves John Galsworthy- I couldn't get into him.

message 176: by Mel (new)

Mel (melcdn) | 90 comments If pets count I have:
Dogs:
Max (Where the Wild Things Are)
Pippi (Longstocking of course)
Cats:
Fiver (Watership Down)
Darcy (Mr. Darcy to you)

Future dog names under consideration:
Huckleberry
Sawyer (not sure I like it as well now with the Lost connotation)
Noddy (love this but think I would have to spend a lot of time explaining Enid Blyton to people in the park)
Dickon (Secret Garden - like everything but the short form).

Mel

message 177: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (sherylmarasi) | 93 comments Huckleberry w/be cute for a dog! Never thought of that one!

message 178: by Diane (last edited May 05, 2009 11:38AM) (new)

Diane (dianedj) Sherry - I'm afraid to admit (if you don't already know) that I named the kitten Bella because of Twilight although she is beautiful too! :) I got kidded about it at the rescue group.

Mel, I love the name Fiver, as Watership Down is one of my favorite all time reads.

message 179: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 92 comments I forgot all about the characters from Watership Down. I used to love that book.

message 180: by Manday (new)

Manday | 212 comments My sister's name is Laurelyn, after the tree of life in the Lord of the Rings mythology (spelled Lorelin in the book).

message 181: by Diane (last edited May 05, 2009 01:24PM) (new)

Diane (dianedj) My boss, Ayla, after the character in The Clan of the Cave Bear.

Manday, that is pretty cool that your sister was named after the Lord of the Rings Tree of Life...

message 182: by GracieKat (new)

GracieKat | 864 comments I named a cat Khayman from Queen of the Damned.

message 183: by Diane (new)

Diane (dianedj) Hi Grace!! Good one!! I loved that book - my favorite of the Vampire series!

message 184: by Bucket (new)

Bucket | 44 comments I loved reading Langston Hughes in high school, so I thought that would be a great name for a son. Then I read "The Solace of Leaving Early" and for the past 4-5 years I've been hoping to have a daughter someday to name Langston!

message 185: by Rebbie (new)

Rebbie | 140 comments A friend named her daughter Dagny after the woman in Ayn Rand's ATLAS SHRUGGED. I liked the name and the daughter is a doll!

message 186: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wanda71) No, but I have named my long-haired dapple daschund "Dibbuns" after the animals in the Redwall Abbey Series. Before Dibbuns we had a long-haired daschund for 16 years. She died in 2006 after a short bout with cancer. During this time I read several Redwall books and the antics of the little animals called Dibbuns kept me smiling---so, I thought Dibbuns would be a perfect name for my new doxie.

message 187: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty Well, I don't know anyone personally who was named after a character/author. However, the author Elizabeth Aston was named after Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, because her parents were Jane Austen fans.

Many of my favourite baby names come from characters in books.

message 188: by Lottie (new)

Lottie | 7 comments I named my kitten Arya from Eragon.

:P

I was named after a famous doctor (both my parents are doctors).

:D

message 189: by Lydia (new)

Lydia (ltarbox) | 6 comments My sister has an Alice (Alice in Wonderland), Peter (Peter Pan), and an Oliver (Oliver Twist), and her oldest boy, Maxwell, has the middle name Atticus (To Kill A Mockingbird). She is expecting baby #5 this year. I wonder what name she will come up with.

My daughter's name is Raegan, which is a twist on Regan from King Lear. I love the name, but i hope my daughter will be nicer than Regan was.

message 190: by Abbie K. (new)

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments Only if you consider The Bible a book. My mother named me after David's wife because she looked it up and it meant "my father's joy". It could be worse, she named my sister after a car. LoL

message 191: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Which car? :)

message 192: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Becky wrote: "Which car? :)"

Not Volkswagon I hope!

message 194: by Abbie K. (new)

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments There used to be a car race from London to Brighton before WWII and the wining car one year had the name of "Genevieve".

message 195: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh, well that's not bad at all! I was thinking it was going to be Gremlin. ;) Just kidding. LOL

message 196: by Abbie K. (last edited Jun 29, 2009 04:59AM) (new)

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments Could have been Edsel or Humvee...ewww yucky hahahaha

GracieKat | 864 comments Abbie K. wrote: "There used to be a car race from London to Brighton before WWII and the wining car one year had the name of "Genevieve". "

That's not bad. I went to school with a girl named Chevelle.

message 198: by Rachel (new)

Rachel My husband met a man in Kenya called "Oos-mael." Turns out his parents got the name from an envelope: U.S. Mail.

message 199: by Eve (new)

Eve (eve_lyn) I named my son after Griffin of Griffin and Sabine by Nick Bantock. I read the series the year before I became pregnant and once pregnant, I dreamt I would have a boy. For awhile, when he first learned how to write, my son would write me notes and letters, like character for which he was named. He doesn't anymore because he's 14 and writing letters to your mom is like kissing or hugging her in public - unthinkable!

message 200: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesliecs) I wasn't actually named after Leslie from Bridge to Terabithia, but when my brother was born my parents named him Jesse, and my mom admits that the book had some influence on that decision. She can't remember if she read the book before or after I was born, though.

I named my cat Jane after Jane Austen.
