How were you introduced to the Brontës? I really should have read these books earlier as I live near the Bronte's but I read Jane Eyre for the first time when I was 36! Since then I have read Villette and both of Anne's books. Next on my hit list is Shirley.

Welcome Boof! I must first say how jealous I am that you actually live in Yorkshire. Beautiful country. I WILL make it there one day. Second, so glad you are going to read Shirley. It was the last Brontë novel that I read, and while not as dramatic as Jane Eyre, it has a really sweet story. Did you know that Shirley's character was based upon Emily Brontë if "she had health and prosperity". Happy reading and Happy New Year!

Cheers, Marie

Welcome Samantha! Indeed it is really hard to pick a favorite. Villette was AMAZING. I think it is the ambiguous ending that keeps it a pace below Jane Eyre for me. :) You MUST read Anne's work, especially The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. We'll probably get around to it sometime this year in this group.

message 7: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (samanthajw) | 17 comments I was initially disappointed in the ending of Villette, but it definitely kept me thinking about it and got me to go back and reread the last couple of pages a half dozen times ;-)

message 8: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (thedoctorscompanion) | 16 comments Name- Rachel

Location- Massachusetts

Favorite Brontë Novel- hmmm...I waver back and forth on Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. If I HAD to choose, I would probably say Jane Eyre.

Favorite non-Brontë Novel- Currently it is the Hunger Games.

Favorite Authors- (Brontë or Otherwise) I don't really have a favorite. Probably the Brontes as a group. Otherwise, I just read what looks good to me, regardless of who wrote it.

Hobbies/Interests- Cooking, travel/culture, the Medieval time period, Christianity, and music, expecially the piano. :) And obviously I love to read, since I'm on here!

How were you introduced to the Brontës?- My 10th grade English teacher wouldn't stop mentioning how much she LOVED Jane Eyre. I liked her taste, so I had to read it. I've been hooked ever since.

Rachel (thedoctorscompanion) | 16 comments Hi Rebekah! I LOVE your profile pix!!! Aragorn and she are my faves from the movie. Are the books hard to read? I attempted them a long time ago, and I couldn't get through them. Maybe I will give it another go sometime.

Thanks! I really like your profile pic too, do you know what piece it is? I found the trilogy very fascinating, perhaps a little slow at the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring, and some of the names can be a little tricky, but once I started reading them I couldn't put them down, literally.

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (thedoctorscompanion) | 16 comments I really don't know what the piece is, but I would love to find out! I found it randomly online. I love playing the piano, so I have a lot of piano pix. I keep meaning to take a pix of my piano and upload here as my profile pcture.

I have the Hobbit on my TR list, so maybe I will move that toward the top.

Karen | 2 comments Karen L,
San Diego, CA
Favorite Bronte: Wuthering Heights
Favorite author: keeps changing - depends on my mood
Interests: genealogy; reading historical fiction or novels set in foreign countries
Intro to Brontes: I was an English major in college, but did not have time to read all the classics. As young mother, decided to tackle a list at library listing (just) one hundred of the best novels of all-time. Loved "Wuthering Heights" and really liked "Jane Eyre." Later found "Wide Sargasso Sea" fascinating.
Favorite non-Bronte: as I write this, I'll only mention books I've read in last couple years - "The Kite Runner" and "Cutting for Stone." What I answer may vary from day to day.

Favorite non-Brontë Novel: Too many to list, but I loved Wide Sargasso Sea. Also, although I can't honestly say I've read every single word of it, I'm really infatuated with George Eliot's Middlemarch.
Favorite Authors (Brontë or Otherwise): Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Jane Austen, and 20th-century New Zealand author Janet Frame, among others
Hobbies/Interests: Poetry, art, music, reading, and writing (my first book, published by NYQ Books in 2011, can be found on Goodreads here). In all this, the Brontes have been a huge influence on me.

Wow Maria. I'm jealous that you live SO close.

message 21: by Maria (new)

Maria (mariakelly) | 4 comments Actually it's ages since we've been to Howarth. I have 3 girls aged between 7 and 11 and although the oldest has read Wuthering Heights I think they would probably all be a bit bored looking around the parsonage and museum. It is a lovely village and I loved it when I went with the hubby but I do think you have to be a proper Bronte fan, as I am, to really enjoy it.
