From Dean's Holiday Edition of USELESS NEWS:

THE MOONLIT MIND
Available exclusively as an ebook, THE MOONLIT MIND is a 34,000-word (130-page) novella set in the same city as 77 SHADOW STREET, although it is a very different kind of tale and one of Dean's favorites among his own works. It's the mesmerizing tale of Crispin, a twelve-year-old boy who lives wild in the city and has no friends but Harley, though Harley never speaks. Plagued by fearsome memories, Crispin moves in the shadows, through a metropolis both familiar and infinitely strange, evading an evil that also knows the city well and hungers for this special child.

Eventually this piece will be published either in the back of the paperback edition of 77 SHADOW STREET and/or in a collection of novellas.

Marc-Antoine I have read and although I found enjoyable, the ending seemed to have been to easy, came about to quick. Lacked proper closure.

I haven't read it yet - might wait until it's available in another format besides ebook.

K. Wood (kallenwood) A lot of people complained about the ending, but I think it worked. I really enjoyed it. The omniscient POV was a bit weird at first, but I got used to it.

I *really* dislike the idea of anyone's work being made available ONLY as an ebook. IM(not so)HO, ebooks are great for those who CHOOSE to use that format. I am not one of those people, preferring the feel/smell/look/idea of what I consider a REAL book, one I can curl up with . . .

K. Wood (kallenwood) Well, like "Darkness Under the Sun," it'll likely become available in print in the paperback version.

I understand the dislike of exclusivity, but when it's temporary, I don't see a big deal.

Darkness Under the Sun is also now available as audiobook. I'm still old school so I listen to audiobooks & music on CD rather than download. Yesterday I ordered the Darkness Under the Sun Audiobook on 2 CDS. I do own an ereader because I bought the cheapest model when I worked at Borders last year and that is what I used to read Darkness Under the Sun. I may break down and buy the ebook but I prefer paper pages or audio.

You're right, it is not a big deal, just a minor irritation. I can also be a *little* impatient, lol, when made to wait when I'm looking forward to what promises to be a good read.

I purchased The Moonlit Mind on Audiobook and I'm listening to it now. I don't have printed copy to follow along with so I don't like that but oh well. I am currently on disc 2 of 4. I just finished Odd Interlude so the tone has taken some adjusting to - Odd was filled withe humor which The Moonlit Mind doesn't seem to have. So far a few key phrases stick out....

Crispin loves his nanny.

By the light of the moon the truth can be seen... By the Light of the Moon by Dean Koontz

Crispin has a brother named Harley and a dog named Harley both Harleys seem to like cats.

I'll have to read this sometime. That tidbit sounds intriguing. :)

This is a dark tale with very little humor. Listening to this story, certain elements are reminding my of Midnight Voices by John Saul - a book I've read a 2-3 times.

I haven't ever read anything by John Saul. Does he write thrillers, too?

I have the audiobook. It might also be included in the paperback of 77SS I'm not sure. I don't do ebooks either.

Barbara | 486 comments Oh....well I have hardback of 77SS so no help there....I will do audio books sometimes

I do audiobooks like crazy! :-)

Barbara | 486 comments My sister loves audiobooks too.... They come in handy during long work commutes and I don't have as much time to read as I used to....but I have to read every night in bed or I can't fall asleep!!! Lol

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments I love audiobooks too. And i sometimes get the Kindle book with the professional narration. The books sound terrific.

Barbara wrote: "I have to read every night in bed or I can't fall asleep!!!..."

Yeah. How else would one fall asleep?

I own the audiobook for The Moonlit Mind and it's very short so I will be joining in re-reading or re-listening to this one next week :-)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Actually certain audiobooks do help put me to sleep. I got a free copy of a Dickens' Christmas story "The Cricket on the Hearth" narrated by Jim Dale. I like Dickens and had never read this story. I doubt I have ever gotten past the first chapter of the audiobook.

I love having someone read me a bedtime story :-)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Last night I was reading the Moonlit Mind on my Kindle Fire with the narration while waiting for my TV show to come on and drifted off to sleep. It's not that Koontz books make me sleepy, it's that reading. I am really spoiling myself when I get the professional narration with a kindle book. What I like too is that I can increase the speed of the narration if I am reading along.

I also must read every night to fall asleep. This is actually the 2nd time I am reading The Moonlit Mind. I am picking things up this time or perhaps don't remember from the first time about a year ago. U can not rush an author. It's a creative process that has it's own way of working. On top of that the author has to be ready to "share" his work. It's not black and white like a newspaper. We want The Dean Koontnz. Not someone who can put words on paper to get copy out. My glasses are not on so please excuse typeing errors.

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Diane, I have come to the conclusion that with koontz books, not only is the writing a process, but also the reading. It seems I notice more things, make more connections, etc. when I re-read the books.

Barbara | 486 comments I am going to read them again too. I need to find the movie....when is the DVD coming out??

The DVD is out now. Was released the middle of this past week. I bought mine at Barnes & Noble. I hear Redbox might have them to rent.

I love re-reading my favorite books and still loving them - that is how I know it is a true gem :-)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments I just ran across something in The Moonlit Mind which illustrates how you can pick up something in the second reading. It's a little thing but it makes sense regarding what happened in the house.
(view spoiler)

Diane Lynch (dianedesmarrstlynch) | 486 comments Karen B I agree with u about the writing and reading process with his books.
