The Chennai Book Club discussion
Group book read
I have a copy of the book. It's one of my favourite books and have read it many times. Will read it again so that I can participate in the discussion. Want to make it to the meeting this time even if the sky falls on my head. Keep me posted about the details of the next meeting.
Hi.. I am a new member and am looking forward to the next meet. I found the book on scribd (Jonathan-Livingston-Seagull). I just show 22 pages ? Am I reading the right book ?

22 pages sounds quite short. My edition has more than hundred pages.

I finished this book last week, how is everyone progressing?"
Haven't started yet. Planning to read it on Friday so that the book will be fresh on my mind when we meet on Sunday :) Hope you enjoyed reading the book.

Woefully behind on it - too many books to read at the moment and all urgent for various reasons. Need to get a copy from my library.Shd be done by friday, though.

It was wonderful to meet you yesterday, Saritha. We had quite a fascinating meeting discussing about Jonathan Livingston Seagull and also how it applies to our lives. I am making the booklist now.

I remember we talking about Siddhartha the last time and I'm intrigued by a german's take on gautama, so I'm for Siddhartha...
The Siddharta by Hermann Hesse. and its just amazing.. The way it goes around .. i loved it.... And I after reading a while realized that its not actually the story of Buddha..
Hey guys when is the next meeting? I'd love to come.

There is also a movie on the book. It stars Shashi Kapoor & Simi Garewal. I was blown away by the camera work. It largely remains true to the novel . The travels of Siddhartha with wandering saints smoking hookah has some bewitching songs/music. The book I will be reading once more after many years.

I'm sorry, I am still getting used to Goodread's commenting system. :)
Currently plodding through it as though it's a textbook. I can see there's hope beyond the last page - and I have some very interesting books waiting beyond that last page.
Lots of effort required to disconnect from mundanity of everyday life and enter the many worlds of Siddhartha. Read a couple of chapters 3-4 times to dig out some sense. 30% to go.
@Sahas - Did you really mean 'Putdownable'? Sure you didn't miss 'Un' in the beginning? :)
@Saritha - Sorry to know that. I liked your sense of humour - about hope lying beyond the last page :)
@Karthik - Hope you are enjoying re-reading it.
I am on page 49 now - got distracted by a few things today. Hoping to finish it tomorrow.

Herman Hesse makes life look very easy unfortunately that's not the way life is, anyhow trying to lead a life like a free flowing river :-)
Finished reading 'Siddhartha' today evening. I thought I might not like it as much as when I read it the first time, but I really loved it this time too. Can't wait to discuss it tomorrow :)

Yes, that is true. We can all dream to achieve that free-flowing-river-state, can't we :)

Finally managed to finish 'Siddhartha' ! The ending was quite profound, enough to move it from 'OK' to 'Really liked it'. Thanks to those members who stood by the book (or must I say author) which motivated me to finish the book.
P.S. Since it is a translated work, think the translator must have traded off legibility in an over zealous attempt to be too true to the original wordings, making the reading demanding for so many of us.

I guess that's true. I also found the book getting better as it progressed. I haven't reached the end yet. I agree about the translation part.
@Natraj - Glad to know that you liked the book.
@Saritha - Hope you like the ending!
@Sahas - Happy Reading!

Having a blast re-reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The first time I devoured the book like a greedy glutton, but this time I am letting the humour sink in slowly...Also, the first few chapters are quite a drag . Now I know why I did not complete the book for almost 5 years....

Yes, we had a wonderful meeting yesterday! We talked about 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' and how it foreshadowed technology developments like the Kindle / iPad and the touch screen / Kinect, how Adams uses a lot of subtext in his book to comment on today's world and how Adams combined humour uniquely in science fiction. We also discussed about whether the internet makes a person dumb, about what we were reading currently, on why humans eat fatty and sugary foods and whether there is an evolutionary need for it, on chennai food blogs and other fascinating topics.
Looking forward to discussing 'Sea of Poppies' by Amitav Ghosh during the next meet. The next meet is scheduled on 15-Apr-2011, Sunday. I will post a separate message on the venue once it is finalized.
Happy Reading!
