I will read 12 I already own - at least that will somewhat justify that I purchase way more books than I am able to read, and also allow me to continue purchasing!
Me too - which also corresponds to some classics, and books oldest on my TBR list! Thanks for the suggestions, Michael. Oh, btw: are we doing 12 MORE than 2011, no matter if we reached our goals or not? The idea is to increase # of books read in the new year, right?
I will read 12 I already own but with a theme. All discworld books because i'm working my way through all of prachett's books. And more if I can.
Decided to read 12 graphic novels. I ended reading none this year and I have no idea why. This will be in addition to normal reading load, but I'm not setting any other goals. '12 will be all about just sitting back and enjoying reading whatever I want :)I swear I posted this before I saw Michael's post. Jinx!!
I have too many books. I read when I can. I can't imagine reading more then 12 to 15 in a year. That is being ambitious. I know it depends on the size of the book. I will say I am going to read 12 books in 2012. May be more. I have to be realistic.
I will read 12 from home and also I'm going to read the books that people have lent me and get them back to them - post haste! I will continue to borrow too many books from the library and keep up with my book discussion group (some times that is a monumental undertaking).
I will read 12 books in the TBR stack by my bed. I keep a notebook handy as I read and jot down things I want to remember, including titles and authors of books referenced in whatever I'm reading. I will go through last year's notebook and chose 12 titles that I wrote down.
My 12 in '12 Reading Challenge will be to read 12 classics; 12 books recommended by Michael and 12 books recommended by Ann of BOTNS; 12 books I already own; 12 books out of the 16 chosen for the 2012 Tournament of Books.
I pledge to knock down 6 National Book Award books and 6 Man Booker Prize books in 2012.
I have my bookclub and have joined 2 challenges, so I'll be busy!Last I checked I had roughly 850 unread books at home. So I'll try to read these 12 books that I expect a lot from (and have included in the challenges I'm doing) :-)
Johan Theorin; Blodlag or in English The Quarry
A.S. Byatt The Children's Book
Mathias Malzieu The Boy With the Cuckoo-Clock Heart
Marcus Sedgwick The Dark Flight Down
Alan Bradley The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
Craig Thompson Habibi
Paul Auster Travels in the Scriptorium
Colm Tóibín Mothers and Sons
Gail Carriger Soulless
Glen Duncan The Last Werewolf
Alessandro Baricco City
and I want to finish Flappers and Philosophers: The Collected Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald
I left some room in my challenges for books by Booktopia 2012 authors (can we have the names sooon please? ;-)
great plans everyone! (and yes, Louise, we will be announcing Booktopia author names soon!)
Going forward, can everyone post their reading plans in the other folder "What's your 12 in '12 reading plan?"
Let's keep this folder for updates on how you're doing once you've gotten going.
Thanks for the early enthusiasm!!!

I'm doing to read the 12 oldest books on my reading list, plus 12 more books than the 52 from last year so 64 books in 2012.
I plan to read 12 Classics, 12 I already own, and 12x12.. Which is a total of 168 books in 2012. I know this sounds like a big goal.. it's actually only 24 books more than I read in 2011! ;) Happy Reading!
Well it's officially 2012 here and while I wait for goodreads to update the "date started" field to include 2012 I have had a think about the 12 book challenge for this year. Along with many others I plan on reading 12 classics (starting with the Great Gatsby which is currently sitting on my coffee table staring at me) and 12 books I already own. In addition I will also read 12 books to review (I review books for our local newspaper) and 12 books I have borrowed (as I have about 12 books from friends currently sitting on my shelf which I need to return).
I didn't meet my 11 in '11 goal. I am determined to meet by 12 in '12 goal. I ended up reading 36 books in 2011 so my total for 2012 is 48. Happy New Year everyone!
Although I didn't meet my 2011 goal, I missed by one book, I will be adding 12 to last years goal. Included in that goal will be at least 12 graphic novels, 12 books (ebooks/audiobooks/physical) I already own, and 12 misc books to include books I started in 2011).Total 36
Michael wrote: "Going forward, can everyone post their reading plans in the other folder "What's your 12 in '12 reading ..."I already started on my 12 paranormals in 2012 with
Dangerous Highlander. It is a quick read and better than the other paranormal romances I've read so far though I still don't get when it was that romance turned into erotica!
I'm in for 12 books that I already own (and haven't read before). That gives me many, many titles to choose from and will make my brother happy. He doesn't understand that one can never have too many books. Maybe I will actually part with some of the books after I read them.
I'm in for twelve books that I own and have not yet read. I will get to the stacks by the bed and on the shelves, that have been on my to read list way too long.
I have started to attack my TBR list and the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. When I post up reviews, I will give you links to the main page of the various challenges that they are for.
I believe I'll go with 12 Pulitzer Prize winners from the fiction and non-fiction categories. I'm sure I'll also hit 12 in other categories in my race to read 100 books two years in a row - 12 audio, 12 classics (also counts as 12 e-books as that is how I generally read classics now), definitely 12 books I already own.
I'm going to brag now because this won't last...
I read 3 books last week toward my reading goals this year.

I'm nearly done with my first book of 2012....100 pages left....reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Jonathan safran Foer)....very different than most things I read but liking it and wanted to read it before the movie comes out.
Finished up my first three books for the overall +12 challenge, very exciting! I'll probably read another 3 graphic novels today, before I get started on #1 from my goodreads TBR shelf, Slaughterhouse-Five. Happy January!
I'm on the second half of my second book for 12 in 2012. Then I need to take a break for buddy reads and because I just can't stick to one genre for more than a couple of books.
Callie wrote: "Finished up my first three books for the overall +12 challenge, very exciting! The Morning News just announced the 16 books chosen for 2012's Tournament of Books. Part of my 12 in 2012 reading challenge is to read 12 out of these 16 books. I read 6 of the 16 in 2011; I need to choose 6 books from the following titles. The Last Brother; Open City; Lightning Rods; The Stranger's Child; Salvage the Bones; 1Q84; The Cat's Table; The Devil All the Time; Swamplandia!; and "The Green Girl" by Kate Zambreno. I've just started "The Cat's Table" and "1Q84" is already on my nightstand. Any suggestions for my final four in this category?

Definitely Salvage the Bones. My next 3 (since you already have Ondaatje) would be Devil All the Time, Stranger's Child, and maybe Open City. Open City is the only one of those choices that I haven't read. I really like Swamplandia, but I've heard so many great things about Open City that I feel like I would have to pass up a known entity and give it a try. (I also have not read The Last Brother or Lightning Rods).

If you are reading classics and can't concentrate on them for long periods of time, you can head over to LibriVox, where they have quite a large selection of public domain books on audio for free. Sure the quality is not as good as if you bought an audiobook, but still I find that I can read large portions of these books quite quickly. As I write this, I am listening to A Midsummer Night's Dream (and am almost done). They download into your podcast area, if you use iTunes. That being said, I am sorely behind, but I am almost able to check off one of the Shakespeare plays that I need to read for a Shakespeare challenge (I am going to read a total of 13, an additional one for another Classics challenge).
If you are wondering about the icon, its one of my favourite quotes from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (and yes it was in the movie).
wow! 13 books! I was proud of myself for having finished three already and two of them were kids or YA books.Next up: Sense of an Ending

I finished Witchling my second paranormal this year. It was half as bad as many of the reviewers claim. Now I'm taking a break with some fantasy - The Left Hand of God.
I'm so relieved to read that others don't read just the classics - gives me courage to post that I like thrillers, police procedurals, among others. what I've decided to do is read 12 I already own (10 from the pile of thrillers, 2 from the living room bookshelves which include bios, historical nonfiction, cultural history) plus reduce my kindle list by 24 from 1/5/12 when I made the resolution.love BOTN!!
I am on my way to 12 in 12 - I just went through some of my bookcases and selected the books I plan to read and placed the January selection on my night table.
I don't normally do reading challenges (for the same reasons Ann gave!), but I decided to try a few this year that won't put too much pressure on me! One of those is the BOTNS 12 in '12 Challenge. For my challenge, I am going to read:12 books already on my TBR shelves, including at least 3 recommended by my husband.
Here's my challenge post on my blog:

Maybe this will help me clear off some space on my TBR bookcase!

Don't know if you've ever seen those Planet Fitness commercials, but I want to co-opt their tagline for BOTNS: "The Judgment-Free Zone."

Hi! I have already decided an 12 i 12 challenge - I will read 12 books from my bookshelves. Bought but not yet read.
Melissa wrote: "If you are reading classics and can't concentrate on them for long periods of time, you can head over to LibriVox, where they have quite a large selection of public domain books on audio for free. ..."I've read quite a few classics and enjoy them. But I read most of them when I had little money and they were what I had on my shelves or could find in the discount bin. As a result I am always surprised when people are impressed.
Personally I am impressed, and mildly intimidated, by people who read newly published books and those on the best sellers lists. I'm too disorganized to keep up with publication dates.
As part of my +12 in '12 plan, I decided to try 12 Indie bookstores that I've never been to. Today I visited the Toadstool Bookshop in Milford, NH. It's a great location, lots of staff recommendations, and from their website it looks like the host lots of events. It's also much closer than I thought it was going to be, so that's a huge plus! Made a few purchases, said hi to the store puppy, overall a great experience!
