I don't know if hated is the right term, maybe misunderstood and taken advantage of (like leak...)
maybe Malcolm Galdwells Outliers: The Story of Success could potentially be used as a comparative

Case in point: Justin Bieber. He's got his fans, but there is an even more vocal loathing and hatred thing going on toward him.
The graced had their fans, but more so they had their detractors.

I agree with this very much! I also thought'graces' to be a gift rather than a race. And gifted people today also stand before a lot of hatred and misunderstandings.
