Nick i read this book and personally thought is was better than the hunger games, but the hunger games is still the close second. which would you say is better?

Kaitlyn Gee I think this book beats it by a long shot. The problems seem so much more real, so much easier to understand. I could experience everything with the characters. The Hunger Games was good, sure, but it was all so political. I felt like Katniss never really is in control of her own life, that she's continually being made a puppet. Whereas in Unwind, everyone seems so much more driven and so aware of who they are. They fight to be in control more than Katniss ever did. Also, I mean, Neal Shusterman is a genius. Seriously. The way he twists the plot, portrays the characters... it's amazing.

i agree the characters did seem more like real people.

Allison I think both of these stories are amazing. I can't put one before the other because they are both good in their own ways. Unwind has the amazingly believable characters but Hunger Games has the amazing plot and the love triangle that adds to Katniss' dilemma. I would have to say that they come in at a tie because they are both good in their own ways.

Michael Taylor Not even a thought on this one - UNWIND is sooooo much better.

Sarah Unwind is better.

I like the Hunger Games and love Katniss as the strong heroine but the characters in Unwind just seem more complex and interesting.

I can't wait for the sequel for this book to come out this year! I think it's called Unwholly.

Kathleen Harsch Hunger Games is hands down a better read. It's much more exciting and everyone's life is on the line.

I don't really understand the comparison, but definitely Unwind. As everyone has said, Neal Shusterman's characters are more developed. I hated Katniss so much in Catching Fire that I haven't gone on to the third book.

Unwind is also more original; The Hunger Games isn't the only children-in-a-bloody-battle-to-the-death novel out there.

well i found them similar in the way that all the characters in each book hates what the government is forcing them to do, and that they fight the system any way they can.

That makes sense.

message 11: by Cora (last edited Jan 03, 2012 01:48PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cora I think Unwind is better, the characters are more likeable and there is no silly love triangle in it.It felt more real.I don't know why exactly, but I was blown away by Unwind.

Irisjade Unwind, but I don't know if there's much of a comparison. They're pretty different books to me, but Neal Shusterman is defintely a much better storyteller. I fell in love with him at an early age, so obviously he's already in my good book. But he's also much more believable. I mean, how many can see Unwind happening compared to the Hunger Games? I mean, really? Not to mention there are much better climaxes.

i described what in my opinion are the 2 major similarities in message 9

message 14: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I liked both and besides being dystopias, not enough was similar for me to compare. Unwind made me think more. THG was just one hell of a ride throughout the entire trilogy. Both are worth reading and equally worthy of recommendation if you like this genre.

message 15: by Dee (last edited Jan 04, 2012 04:12PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dee but everyone's life is on the line here too, they are going to unwound if they are caught

which would prefer, the quick death (or quickish) that many of the HG contestants had, or the one that the guy in unwind went through (admitedly, he couldn't feel anything, but he knew what was going on)

george ☽ erm... oooh a tough one... but I think it's the Hunger Games... even though I loved this book, the Hunger Games was AMAZING! This is better than Catching Fire and Mockingjay though.

Olivia Definately Unwind

yael Unwind vs. Hunger games???!! Ur insane!!! I'm frantic now becuz i can't think of one because there both good.

Inday Aero wrote: "Unwind vs. Hunger games???!! Ur insane!!! I'm frantic now becuz i can't think of one because there both good."

Yes, I feel the same way about the two books too, they are both exciting and I think its bound to be a tie for me atleast :)

IanGB Unwind! Hunger Games deserves a ton of credit, but overall I preferred Unwind.
When Neal Shusterman finishes the Unwind trilogy it will be easier to compare

message 21: by yael (new) - rated it 5 stars

yael that's true.

message 22: by Madi Marie (new) - added it

Madi Marie I read most of Unwind (I never got around to finishing it) and I've read and own the Hunger Games series and I definitely prefer The Hunger Games!

Peter Both are great novels, but I feel that Unwind was the better read. I didn't really like how Katniss' relationship with Gale/Peeta was portrayed; it seemed to be something akin to the Twilight saga, parallels which I do not like.
I am a fan of the dystopia novel and while both have their own merits and are exciting in their own way, Unwind, for me, is the better read.

Melanie Both books are fantastic, with creative topics and amazing characters, bt I'd have to say I prefer the Huger Games for the writing style and the action. It was more suspenseful for me then Unwind- and that's saying something, considering I cried through Unwind! If you haven't read the Hunger Games and you like Unwind, pick those books up!

message 26: by Gerriane (last edited Mar 01, 2012 08:55AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gerriane Unwind deals with issues that are more understandable. The hunger games is more political but both are really good books with lots of plot twists and suspense!

Alfonso Dela Cruz Unwind is more believable, and it can, possibly, really happen in the future. After reading Unwind, I had an eerie feeling of complete satisfaction but somehow disappointed because a great book has ended too early. I was totally overwhelmed and had a mental trauma that lasted for days. Hunger Games is an awesome read, but Unwind is clearly astounding.

Karen I liked Unwind a lot more. First of all, I liked Shusterman's writing a WHOLE lot more than Suzanne's. Second, Unwind had a more main protagonists than The Hunger Games, so you got more than one point of view. Third, Unwind is a lot more in-touch with today's world. Sure, it's set in the future, but it's a future that's very similar to today's world, and that's probably not an accident. Shusterman didn't spend 100 pages creating a fantastical new future with awesome technology or anything, and I think it's because he wanted the readers to think of this happening in today's society. With The Hunger Games, it was the opposite. While the whole watching-kids-kill-each-other things is horrifying, it's so completely removed from what society today thinks as a whole that it doesn't seem remotely possible.

And that...is why I liked Unwind more.

Elora I liked the Hunger Games book 1, but the 2nd and 3rd ones ruined the series for me. the only good thing about them was Finnick. Unwind on the otherhand was so much more interesting, and i thought that the disturbingness of it was cool. It was exciting, and the characters were way better.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved Unwind. Which is something for me because it's very difficult for me to read a book all the way through if it doesn't grab my attention. I also tried to read The Hunger Games, but I couldn't get into it for the life of me. I think that The Hunger Games would be a good series. In my opinion Unwind beats The Hunger Games.

Kaitlin The thing is they're both so great and the writing and situations are very different. There was a lot more complexity and various stories and the writing in Unwind was fantastic. However, I found myself becoming more attached to the characters and more emotionally invested in The Hunger Games...I honestly don't know. For me it's a very tough choice.

Carmon I liked the themes in Unwind and thought they were really interesting, but the way it was written was quite dull in my opinion and I didn't feel any attachment to the characters. The hunger games on the other hand drew me in a wouldn't let me put the book down, i read the entire series in two days. The characters are more interesting and it's more exciting. Plus it faces themes that i feel are more relevent to todays society than those in Unwind.

Loved them both so much! :)

message 34: by Jess (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jess I loved them both. But I can't compare them until the unwind series is all written. I think Shusterman is an excellent writer, but you never know what will happen in the next book.

Kidhawk I liked them both but i thought that hunger games wasnt all over the place. so i go with the hunger games.

message 36: by Nicole (new) - added it

Nicole Hunger games.

Anissa Unwind is better hands down. It not only affected me mentally but physically. Thinking about being unwound makes my stomach knot up, Neal Shusterman did a way better job the Suzanne Collins. I love the Hunger Games series but I just finished reading Unwind and I want to reread it again and I finished today! This book is amazing.

message 38: by Kat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kat Well, comparing the Hunger Games and Unwind is something I haven't even thought about. But I don't think I could pick one over the other.
The Hunger Games has such a good plot (Well, until the third book...)and I love the characters, especially Katniss and Gale. But I do believe that the series could've been so much better if it hadn't ended like it did. The series could have easily been an even better read.
However, Unwind is only one book so far. Though I know it will be a series. And I absolutely loved the first book. (and I loved the first Hunger Games book too) So I suppose that if this series doesn't disappoint me, I'll have to agree that its better than the Hunger Games.

message 39: by Khadija (new)

Khadija unwind is more relatable and complex and interesting. done.

Anmol I liked both The Hunger Games and Unwind the same but Unwind compared to Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Unwind definitely wins

Randomness Unwind is WAAAYYY better than the Hunger Games because it shows the point of views of all the characters, its not confusing at all and the action is awesome. Plus, its SOOOOO much more intresting and ALL the characters are AMAZING!!!!!! LOOVVEE this book!!!!!!!!!!

Amber Myers Unwind is way better then the hunger games!!! Unwind kids are being sent to be basically dismembered and put into other people. They have no choice in this which is sad. These kids are fighting for the right to live. FOR EVERYONE TO LIVE. The Hunger Games are a bunch of kids fighting to live too but in order to do this they have to kill everyone else. Which makes a cool story don't get me wrong. Unwind though there is just so much more to it not only is everyone fighting for themselves but there also fighting for everyone else. I think Unwind is also better cause it was just written better, the Hunger Games were written well its just Unwind had so much more to it you got to see the sides of more then just one person knowing there thoughts and how things actually come together not just one person and wondering how things work together or being pursated to see and think one way which usually happens when you only see one point of view. Unwind is just Simply better i think but the Hunger Games is still a great book and a great set of books it just simply isn't as good and that's all there is to it really.

Nicole Powierski Both The Hunger Games and Unwind are amazing series. But personally as of now I believe The Hunger Games is hands down a better read. Although it all depends on the third book of Unwind, which doesn't come out until October(I think) considering the third book in The Hunger Games SUCKED. The first two books were amazing, just like Unwind, hopefully Unsouled doesn't suck like Mockingjay did.

message 44: by Joe (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joe I disliked unwind, i just found it extremely boring! The hunger games all the way.

Nicole Powierski The beginning is a little slow but once you get into it I think it's really good :)

Tiffo I liked Unwind because its style was unique--from the way the author wrote to the way the characters acted to the mini "our world" articles that began some of the chapters. Hunger Games... the concept was good, but it was based on traditional YA tricks that made it really good, but not great.

message 47: by Megan (new) - added it

Megan Harrison they were both good series, but I think Unwind was better by a long shot.

message 48: by Jenn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenn I felt like Hunger Games was more believable. I enjoyed both stories a lot, but I haven't been able to get my hands on any of the other Unwind books to do a proper comparison.

Erika Hébert Unwind all the way!

message 50: by Jo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jo Elliott Unwind! So much more unique than The Hunger Games!
