Kindle and Nook Users opinion needed

I have an issue where I want to give the first book in my series away for FREE, but amazon and bn.com don't allow a price of FREE (I have been working on workarounds and loopholes). Smashwords does allow FREE and I will be moving it there in the future, but smashwords is NOT amazon.

I have no issues with sending or providing a link of a Mobi or ePub file and having readers load it on their nook or kindle. How many kindle or nook users would be bothered with loading an eBook onto their device? Do you just prefer to have amazon or bn.com load it for you?

Wyatt, you could enroll your book in the Kindle Select programme, which would allow you to offer it free for five promotional days during the ninety day trial period. It might be worth looking into.

Wyatt, I ran into the same problem recently. I wanted to do a giveaway but Amazon and B&N wouldn't allow the FREE price. So Smashwords was the only way. Your other option is what you're doing, give away copies yourself. That is time consuming and a big job but doable.

I also found Goodreads would not allow in its giveaways ebooks. Bummer.

The problem with that is Amazon's exclusivity clause:

1 Exclusivity. When you include a Digital Book in KDP Select, you give us the exclusive right to sell and distribute your Digital Book in digital format while your book is in KDP Select. During this period of exclusivity, you cannot sell or distribute, or give anyone else the right to sell or distribute, your Digital Book (or content that is reasonably likely to compete commercially with your Digital Book, diminish its value, or be confused with it), in digital format in any territory where you have rights.

Which basically means Nook users wouldn't be able to get the first book.

I wonder how many people would bother to load an ebook on their device. Amazon makes it so easy.

Wyatt, it is so easy to download a book onto our e-readers. I wouldn't let that deter you. I get a lot of books from indie authors and it is just as easy to download an e-pub as it is to hit the button on B&N.

For me it depends on how much I want the book. It is super easy to put a book on nook and if a book is free and I really want it, I'll go ahead and download it and put it on my nook. If the book sounds just okay, I'll pass.

So, if I was you. I would just go ahead and put it up for .99 cent on B&N and Kindle, so it gets exposure and just put it on smashwords for free. Let people know they can get the book for free at smashwords or pay the .99 cent.

Also another option is to have a free download on your site or even put the book up in its entirety.
