Recap/Review: Once Upon a Time is a new show on ABC that has already grown into a large fan base and after watching the first episode, I am totally onboard to become just as obsessed!
The episode opens on a black screen with a dark enticing composition of music and by stating the above words then moves into a scene with a prince galloping desperately through a forest in search of his true love. He finally finds her, locked away in a magical coffin and protected by dwarves. He’s too late; she has already been poisoned by the evil queen. But alas, true loves kiss saves the day! Snow White is swept up by Prince Charming to the castle where they promptly get married in a gorgeous ceremony . . . Which is then rudely interrupted by the evil Step-mother slash Queen.
The Queen comes to bare a gift to the newlywed couple: she will allow them their one happy time together but vows that soon everything Snow White loves, everything everyone in the kingdom loves will be taken from them and out of their suffering the Queen’s victory will rise, “I shall destroy your happiness if it’s the last thing I do.” Prince Charming attempts to take the Queen out with his sword but the Queen just disappears as quickly as she entered.
The scene changes, moving into our world with a boy on a bus, holding a copy of a book entitled Once Upon a Time which seems to hold the same exact story. The boy gets off the train and grabs a taxi. The scene then moves to a restaurant where Emma Swan, a jail bondsman is on a pretend date with the man she needs to capture. After she successfully knocks him out when he tries to run away, she returns home and finds the boy from the train whose name is Henry and declares himself to be Emma’s son.
Thus begins the fairytale world meets modern society is 2011. Emma’s usual reclusive life of catching bad guys is turned a little upside down after her son Henry—who she gave away for adoption when she was 20—seeks her help to break the curse the evil Queen had placed on Snow White and the world of fairytales. Henry lives in a town called Storybrooke which is Maine where time is frozen and where Snow White and everyone from the Enchanted Forest where sent to when the Queen cursed them. Now Henry is desperately hoping Emma will help him take down the evil Queen and set things right. But the problem is Emma doesn’t believe in fairytales.
My Own Thoughts: Once Upon a Time may just be the new big hit in TV. What I really love about the show is that it has a movie theater feel. You really do wind up feeling as if you are watching a movie and get swept away into the story. The costumes are beautifully crafted, the actors portray their parts quite nicely, the transitions between fairytale and modern world flow well, and the suspense is build up just as well.
I am looking forward to see where this show goes and recommend it to all you hopeless romantics out there!
Important Events in the episode:
• The Prophecy: Snow White and Prince Charming spent about a nine months happily married (except for the constant nagging reminder of the vow the evil Queen made). Snow White becomes pregnant and in an attempt to protect her unborn daughter, she seeks out Rumpelstiltskin who may know of a way to save her daughter from the evil Queen’s curse. Rumpelstiltskin offers his help but there is a price: he must have the name of Snow White’s daughter. Snow White agrees and Rumpelstiltskin tells her that she should send her daughter off and her daughter will return when she is twenty eight years old and the final battle will begin. • Birth of Snow White's Child: Snow White gives birth to a daughter and name’s her Emma just as the evil Queen invades the kingdom. She and Prince Charming had summoned to create a magical wardrobe from an enchanted tree which could only fit one so Snow White and Prince Charming reluctantly place their daughter inside the tree to save her so that she may return to them when it’s the right time. • Prince Charming's Valiant Fight: Prince Charming puts up a valiant fight against the evil Queen’s soldiers who are trying to get to the magical tree to get the baby. He gets stabbed in the side and falls to the ground; and just before he falls unconscious he watches as his daughter disappears into some unknown world through the magic of the tree. He is in a comma in our world. • Time Begins to Move Again: Emma heads to a bed and breakfast, she agrees to stay for a week just as Henry asked and as she is handed the key, the clock on the clock tower which had been frozen begins to tick again.
Favorite Moment/Scene/Revelation: When Snow White finds Prince Charming unconscious, slipping away, she kisses him thinking the same way that true loves kissed worked on her, it will also save him but Prince Charming remains at death’s door.
Swoon Alert: Josh Dallas! He plays Prince Charming and is ridiculously gorgeous! He also looks pretty darn hot in tights *wink*
