Jason | 1 comments I use a dollar bill (US) it's cheaper than a regular bookmark, and far more durable. I've been using the same dollar bill for the past four or five years, the store bought plastic ones fall apart after two or three books (about 6 weeks).

I also used to remember the page number!
Now I use whatever I have at hand, maybe loosing the ability to remember the page is a way of knowing you are maturing. lol

Ashley (FoxhoundTCF) | 37 comments I used to use a Star Trek: Generations one that I had since 1994 but it finally fell appart last year so the one I use now is one from a book store in the UK called The Works (The bookmark was for them celebrating over 100 branches nationwide)

message 154: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 17 comments I used to have an awesome "zombies are crap at knitting" bookmark...but I'm pretty sure my cat ate it...so right now I'm using an earring...because I like to keep it classy.

message 155: by Darin (new)

Darin Ramsey A post-it, folded in half so it sticks to itself. If one isn't available, any piece of paper smaller than the book will do.
I used to be able to remember page numbers, even on several books at once, but I might have nearly a dozen books going at once, with a couple weeks between picking one up. A marker is a necessity, now.

message 156: by Deb (new)

Deb F | 28 comments The bookmarks from the book depository. They have useful information, and are often quite entertaining, even if the book isn't.

message 157: by Sadie (last edited May 15, 2012 03:52AM) (new)

Sadie Forsythe | 40 comments It's one of two extremes. I love fancy bookmarks, and have several expensive ones. If I am at home with on within reach I love slipping it between the pages. More often than not, however, I'm out and about and just grab whatever scrap of paper is close by. If its a hardback with a book cover I often just use the leaf.

message 158: by Frederick (new)

Frederick (xthawx) | 52 comments I've got a freebie from a local museum, which I'm currently using for Hyperion, and a more sentimental one from Krakow, sent to me by a friend. That's currently stuck in A Blight of Mages - hope to finish that book soon!

message 159: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 67 comments I have a few different ones I could use, but I am currently using this one. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I...

message 160: by Rambler (new)

Rambler (theawkwardrambler) I use pretty much anything as a bookmark, but it has to have some sort of sentimental value.

For instance, I have feathers from different places I've been, I have ticket stubs from films I went to see, I have bookmarks I received as gifts, graduation invitations, that sort of thing.

message 161: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (olivyaa) I typically listen to my books, but if I am reading one in print I always use a 3x5 card.

message 162: by Sarah (last edited May 26, 2012 06:25PM) (new)

Sarah (Scream_Deafening) | 6 comments I find whatever peice of paper is lying closest, usually a receipt or bit of envelop. Though last year I bought a book mark at a pop culture con and it's lasted really well despite being longer than I like (sticks out of the end of normal sized books) though it's great for the tall books particularly hardcovers.

When I am reading one book regularly, and have none on the backburner then I'll just remember the page number or chapter number. Though when I've got several books on the run and can't read often because of tafe (school) I usually just use a receipt. I find thick things such as cards damage the binder and leave marks.

When travelling I use train tickets, work really well because they are a thin cardboard and don't mark the page.

message 163: by Mike (new)

Mike | 21 comments I use whatever is lying around unless it is a library book. If it is a library book, I use the receipt so that I know when the book is due back.

message 164: by HeyT (new)

HeyT I'm a big fan of the post it. I like that I can just stick it on the back of the book while I'm reading and that it doesn't fall out of the book when I toss it in my bag.

message 165: by Snap (new)

Snap (snaap) | 1 comments Same here, i've been useing the small pink post it thingys for ages

message 166: by Skaw (new)

Skaw | 116 comments While I usually use library receipts, junk mail, or none at all, I am a sucker for a cute kitten or puppy on a bookmark. It doesn't mean I use it (I mean too, but they're never around when I need them). But the cuteness lures me into buying them. . .

message 167: by September (new)

September (septemberrain) I cut strips of index cards, fold them in half, then stick a piece of magnet (Pre-sticky on one side.) on each end, causing the ends to stick together. I never lose my place or my bookmark! :D

I'll never go back to just some piece of paper, etc. :D

message 168: by Albert (new)

Albert | 3 comments I use an old bookmark I got from my local library about 15 years ago.

message 169: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4407 comments I bought this one last week when I decided I wanted Endymion in DTE. I don't usually even look at the bookmarks at B&N but I couldn't help but think of this thread when I walked by it en route to the register.

Receipts. Anything else I lose. I have had some really gorgeous bookmarks over the years, including handmade ones and I lose them, but for some reason a receipt for the book when I bought it sticks around forever. >.<

message 174: by Julie (new)

Julie (ju_j) | 9 comments Currently using a Darren Shan business card type card (from when he signed my book), until I lose that. Then it'll be back to the first beat up/worthless trading card in my duplicates pile.

message 175: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (holeyknight) | 16 comments A D&D miniature's card or the "We the People" bookmark from the Smithsonian.

message 176: by Maybe (new)

Maybe (maybeawizard) | 16 comments I use a miniature laminated diploma that I got when I graduated high school in 2001. I have been using this for 12 years now.

message 177: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7230 comments At the bookstore I often grab cards that fall out of magazines.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) I use whatever is at hand. Right now I collect bookmark size stuff...and I just stuff it in whatever book I'm reading.

Currently I'm using a chocolate chip cookie recipe.

message 179: by Erick (new)

Erick Taggart | 71 comments I usually use whatever's closest, but currently it's been a brochure for a hostel in Yangshuo, China, that I picked up last year. It's a good size and heft, and it has some nice scenery on it!

message 180: by Monique (new)

Monique | 4 comments Mainly numbers 3 and 4. The free stuff is great for when I need something substantial to remember my place and I remember to grab it before I start reading. However, when that fails, what ever is handy works just fine. Lately however I have been using an information card about sun safety. Works great to remind me to put on my sunscreen before I start to read in the sun.

message 181: by Anne (new)

Anne | 336 comments A little fuzzy gift bookmark that is essentially the hind legs and tail of an orange cat. (not a real cat)

message 182: by Jordan (new)

Jordan | 12 comments Most of the time I use the receipt from the bookstore where I bought it. There have been a couple of books where I've been terrible and just left it open to the page I was up to But most of the time it's receipts.

message 184: by Dustin (last edited Jun 10, 2012 09:16PM) (new)

Dustin (dustincorreale) I like when you find someone elses old bookmarks in a used book. My favorite so far is an old 70's flight time table brochure, although it's pretty large so I only really use it for larger books. I have several from bookstores, which I like since I got them from different stores in different places. I also will sometimes just use odds and ends, namely a largish sticker (from a softer world). My main consideration is the size in proportion to the book. I don't like a little bookmark in a big book or vice-versa. There's a ratio I like.

message 185: by AC (new)

AC (acekyken) | 3 comments I have some bookmarks that promote certain books, if I don't use those I like to use postcards. If I don't have postcards, "real bookmarks" or photos at hand, I use anything. My cellphone, receipts..
At the moment I use an oversized Magic:The Gathering card ;)

message 186: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (emolivarez) | 12 comments My fiance and I went to B&N this weekend and while we were in line to check out he's talking about random things then stops mid sentence and says "Oh my god! Look at these!" So yea, now I have an Boba Fett bookmark :)

That's a great idea! I might have to try that out.

I usually use a store bought bookmark. My favorite one currently is metal with beaded ribbons hanging from it. It has a quote on it that says, "Wisdom begins in wonder." I love the quote, and I'm a sucker for sparkly things, which I get with the beaded ribbons. I don't like how easily metal bookmarks fall out of books though. When I get books from work (I work at a library), I usually just use the slip of paper with my name on it that we put in for holds.

message 188: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn Douglas | 5 comments My five year old niece likes to draw me little pictures and these have now become my bookmarks of choice. Before she started doing the little drawings for me I had the tendency to use one of my business cards.

message 189: by Paul (new)

Paul | 100 comments Our libraries usually have thin card ones advertising public services, or else similar ones from the bookstore. Not brilliant but they served a purpose.

Until last Christmas when my daughter gave me a nice metal one that hooks over the binding and has a Spitfire aeroplane in relief dangling from the end of a chain. :D

It looks a tad incongruous in the Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb.
On the other hand, dragons spit fire so why not? lol

Old movie ticket stubs stubs..

message 191: by Hershel (new)

Hershel Shipman (hershdawg) | 43 comments I tend to use note cards, magazine inserts etc. anything cheap. However I am using the paper one that came with a book that I ordered from Warwicks

message 192: by Aidan (new)

Aidan (adribbleofink) | 53 comments My memory, a lot of the time. Either that or one of my business cards.

message 193: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 588 comments My husband and I had custom bookmarks printed for wedding favors. I had enough left over that I'm still using them 7 years later. I love them though, our oldest son was in kindergarten when we wed and he drew a picture of a groom and a bride. We used that image on the invites, thank you cards and bookmarks. They also have our names, wedding date and a quote from the song we danced to.

message 194: by Andre (new)

Andre (andreb) | 34 comments Anything I can find. Usually the kids (age 1 & 4) yank them out, so goodreads is my back-up bookmark.

message 195: by Louie (new)

Louie (rmutt1914) | 885 comments My local bookstore (Bookmans) has an annual Fight Censorship campaign every September. They ran this design one year, which became wildly popular, and I still use the bookmark with this image on it, five years later.

message 196: by Antonio (new)

Antonio (anti_establishmentarianist) I cut sticky notes into ribbons about an inch long and a quarter of an inch wide. They stick out about an eight of an inch. If they're horizontal, they mark an interesting passage or idea or character introduction (I'm terrible at keeping characters straight), etc. If the tags are diagonal, they mark where I'm at and the end of that chapter.

Neurotic much?

message 197: by Paul (new)

Paul | 100 comments @Andre
"Anything I can find, usually the kids (age 1 & 4)"

That shocked me as I read it
Surely the kids would ruin the book's binding?
But then I read on and am relieved to hear your books are well looked after. Phew!

message 198: by Forrest (new)

Forrest Magic cards. Or pop-surrealist postcards. Or a real bookmark (I have a few really old ones). Since I read about 6 books at a time, I need a lot of bookmarks. :)

message 199: by Mike (new)

Mike I use a tongue depressor with a picture of a zombie on it.

message 200: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) I remember the page numbers most of the time. But if I want a bookmark I just grab scraps of paper that I always have on hand. I like to write or scribble thoughts and so forth down so I often have lined pieces of paper around.
