The "Home alone" challenge is updated atomatically too (I just added a book to it and it wasn't preloaded).

Cheryl (cherylllr) Btw, my progress seems to be immediately and automatically updating every time, now. :)

Hey, you may be on to something!

I need to watch again with more patience. The first one I looked at updated only after I forced it, but then the next two were automatic. Maybe if I had waited a little while for that first one's cache cycle it would have been automatic also.

Tune in for next trial!

message 104: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I meant to force, but by the time I clicked over there it was updated. So, yes, immediate. Maybe GR staff managed to fix something. Seems like they often do, without fanfare. If we all have success, this would be something to put in the 'unsolicited praise' folder. :)

I noticed the same thing, except for the "Reviews To Do" challenge, that I forced to update when I wrote my first review of the year (I know I'm lazy). Maybe the update becomes automatic after the first entry.

Oddly enough, it is the "Reviews to Do" challenge that I am waiting to see update...so far no.

I already have some reviews posted, so I don't think it has anything to do with the number submitted.

Giving it a day. Stayed tuned.

A day later, and no update.

I am sure Goodreads would like to have everything run smoothly, but if the worse thing I have to encounter is forcing an update to a challenge statistic, I'll take it!

You know, I did notice that if a book is on more than one challenge shelf, such as "reading books from home library" and "mystery" and "by a certain author"; forcing an update at one challenge link will automatically update on the others.

message 108: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) That's good that you don't have to update every challenge separately!

Huh - I'll have to grab a couple of my Climb Every Moutain picture books and see what I see.

I'm not geeky, but is it possibly a browser thing? I'm using Chrome, if there's a chance that matters....

Clearly we need a group image for the main page!

message 110: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh wow, yes. The default question mark was great, but this image, not so much.

Does anyone know a decent place to get free generic-ish images, for example a pile of books or a trophy? Or maybe a member can just post a picture of their groaning bookshelves or a drawing of a really cool question mark on their profile and let Almeta use it?

I have scolured Photobucket on several occasions, and have not found anything that appeals to me.

I am open to suggestions.

Don't forgrt we can also do a banner (masthead) if it is at least 970 x 275 pixels.

In the meantime I'll go look again.

One is up now, but certainly not set in stone.

Well, it certainly represents a "challenge"!

message 117: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) exactly!

message 118: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) It's certainly better than just a question mark! lol

message 119: by Nell (last edited Apr 20, 2012 04:15AM) (new)

Nell I'm finding the new group image a little scary. Once she climbs up and meets the challenge, she goes crashing over the edge!? Yikes!

My challenges do not update until I click on view books. I'm finding that to be true days after a book is assigned to the appropriate bookshelf.

Yeah, I was too optimistic!

The updates for the challenge appear to be even more useless than before. They do not update, because the information that was as entered, is somehow not retained. If you should try to re-enter that information, error messages occur.

I have reported this in the Feedback Group.

message 122: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Just thought I'd check in and say howdy. I'm not doing as well as I want to on my challenge, but I'm still confident I'll find a way to make it happen.

How are you-all doing? I know some of you have multiple challenges - do you think it's helping to have that additional nudge?

I might try multiple challenges next year. Which reminds me:

Almeta, I'm putting in a plea right now that we keep this group going in 2013! :)

message 123: by [deleted user] (new)

Fine on one, eh on two. Still not updating automatically, even if I wait for weeks.

Yess, please :)
All the challenges here and in another group (an italian one) work fine, with the automatic updates.
I love the challenges, I would have missed a lot of good short stories and overlooked the GR authors without Almeta and Mirely.

Yes please!!

message 126: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Well, I'm not going to make it this year. But since the reason I set it up was to clear my physical shelves, and since, while I was looking for books to read there I found other books that I have decided that I can cull unread, I am happy that the challenge helped me!

In other words, thank you, and I look forward to reading a few more this year, and lots next year!!

message 127: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 6 comments I managed really well, although because I changed the way my shelves work my Ebooks and audiobooks didn't register, but as I have the shelves set up the way I want then I wasn't going to faff about just to show I'd done the two challenges.

I'm happy to continue next year - probably just sticking with shorts and door stoppers and maybe non-fiction. There is a 1001 group I now belong to and I feel I ought to get more involved with that, so Ill be putting my 1001 reads on there.

Other than that all good here. Thanks Almeta

message 128: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Faff about - I never heard that but I like it.
I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your accomplishments!

message 129: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 6 comments Faff about / faffing around - good terms for messing around, or kinda fiddling and fussing, or being indecisive. Well that's how I use it anyway. I think you should use it at least once a week. Try it out!!

message 130: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 6 comments Or procrastinating - stop faffing about and get on with it. An excellent term methinks

I have been pretty disappointed ith some of the bugs in the "Challenge program". It doesn't appear that they will be worked out nor does it seem that it will be released to the general populace. Still in Beta testing as far as I can tell.

Still, I will set up some for the year 2013, so that everyone can use them if they would like.

message 132: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Thank you Almeta; what we do have is better than nothing and really helps me. I still have way too many books on my TBR Mountain.

Suzie, I am def. trying to remember faff - my teen son needs to hear me say it.

message 133: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) I went to look up my results again, but the links I tried aren't working. So, although I know I exceeded by goals for a couple of the challenges, I can't tell you what my results were. Oh well, maybe it will work better for 2013.

I had to actually go to each bookshelf for each challenge in order to verifymy results and make corrections becausethe challenges weren't working anyway.

message 135: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) Ok...

11 eDingus (eBook)
10 Hear Ye! Hear Ye! (audiobook)
57 That's Unreadl (horror-supernatural)
34 It's All Too Real (non-fiction)
39 Serial Eyes (series)
49 Challenge yourself (sai-king recommends)

I don't think I made my goals in my other challenges, so the above are the only ones I need updated.

Thanks!

Cheryl, The behavior that you are reporting is basically what I see.

Although sometimes I get a response that the "shelf does not exist", when there is none displayed. I have to start all over again, even though I created my challenge with a shelf.

I think everyone has found a way to work around the quirks. Look forward to the day that we don't have to be that creative!
