2012 So how's it working out for you?

I don't think the exclusive shelves affect the response of the updates of the challenge. I do think, based on evidence so far, it's related solely to whether or not the book is, or is not, pre-loaded on a designated non-exclusive challenge shelf.
Though I'll say agsin that I don't add the book to the challenge shelf until I'm marking it read--that is, whether I mark it as currently-reading, to-read, or don't have it shelved at all, I don't mark it [challenge-shelf-name] until I am also marking it read, fiction-literature, etc.

To further confuse things, I just moved a book from to-read to read and my challenge tag, and it showed up here without any extra clicking from me.

Hi Linda, A book will not automatically move from your to-read to your read once you have marked the date-read, (Good idea though!)
You must manually change the status by marking the radial button, using the drop-down edit shelves menu. e.g. Mark from to-read to read. in order to "move" the book.
In addition, the square next to the challenged-named shelf needs to be checked in order for the book to count toward your challenge goal.

It was marked with a date read before it arrived on the challenge tag/shelf. Correct?

Huh! I never knew the "4 out of 20 read" or "0 out of 10" wording was a link. I'm dumb-founded.

Me too. I just discovered that the the date near the "view your books" forces the update too.

No, the opposite, and I always do it in the same order: Open (empty) review, change shelf tags, write review, add date read, close.

Thank you Almeta, I wonder why it doesn't - at this rate - there is no way to for our TBR shelf to shrink, it will just continue to get bigger and bigger - I think they should work on that.

Yeah, The only way to shrink our TBR shelf is to manually "move" books off of it ourselves.

Now the challenge shelf is a little different. If the book has been 'pre-loaded' onto the challenge shelf, and I read it, shelve it as 'read', and give it a date read (said date being within the parameters of the challenge), I think the *challenge ticker* should update automatically.
Just nobody mess with my shelves!
I don't mind manual shelving. Have to move a book to various non-exclusive tag/shelves, may as well do the exclusive "reading progression" shelves as well.

I sorta suspected that was what you were getting at, but I was not sure.
Be glad to help you with this.
What are the names of the shelves on which you have duplicates?
Would you be willing to send me your email address? We can do this privately...or we can create another thread, if you would like.

I can't see which exclusive shelf it's on - but it must be on either read, currently-reading, to-read, or interested-in. You should be able to just go to 'edit shelves' (from your review on the book's page) and click the button for 'read' and whatever other round button (round means exclusive) is clicked will unclick.
You don't actually have a TBR shelf, so I'm thinking you're talking about to-read shelf?
Since your challenge shelves are non-exclusive (with square buttons when you do 'add to my books' or 'edit shelves') your read books can stay on them. In fact, you *want* those books to stay there, or else they won't count for your challenges.
Poke around and explore. It'll make more sense when you use it more. :)

☺ Yeah, it was practically simultaneous. No problem though.
It looks as though you poked around before you responded. I waited to take a look afterwards. Your response was good.
Linda, I think there may just be a problem with the terminology we have been using. You appear to be shelving books on both exclusive and non-exclusive shelves, with no problem.
When people use the term TBR in relation to shelves/tags, they are meaning the "to-read" shelf.
I am still curious about where duplicates displease you. Also wonder how you mark your challenge shelves. Do you have problems with the count not updating, as Cheryl, Osho and I are experiencing?

Often, maybe usually. However - I have a 'to-read' exclusive and a '... tbr ...' non-exclusive. So people who are not sure how to use shelves shouldn't probably be looking at mine as a good example - too confusing.

I think in general GoodReads is freaking out!! Other links are also failing. Dropdown menus aren't working either. I haven't seen anything official as a response from GR, but flaky things are being reported in several areas.

Almeta & Cheryl,
I consider my "To Read" shelf as my TBR shelf. I think I know what the problem is by both of your explanations, tell me if this is correct. When I choose a book from my TBR (To Read) shelf, should I mark it there as currently reading, will that then move it from that shelf to the currently reading shelf and then to the read shelf after I finish??? I hope this makes sense...

I really appreciate everyone's help!!

Linda wrote: "When I choose a book from my TBR (To Read) shelf, should I mark it there as currently reading, will that then move it from that shelf to the currently reading shelf... "
I do so and the book is moved from a shelf to the currently reading shelf. When I finished, I mark it as "read" and then assign it to the shelves it belongs (poetry, theatre, literature, essays, etc.).

Linda: When you're going to read the book, click currently-reading. When you're finished, click read. If you want it to register in the site-wide reading challenge, or for other statistical purposes, you need to fill in the date you finished reading it (on the review-writing screen, under the review box--get there by clicking edit review), then click save.
If you are in any other group challenges, you also need to follow the instructions for that challenge and set up a non-exclusive shelf for books that will count in that challenge. (Ignore this piece if it's not relevant.)

From http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/5... I click on More Challenges and get an error page. This has been true for many days.

We are not the only ones with this problem, it seems to be happening in a lot of other groups. I did, however, report it again, just to get our two cents added to the discussion.
In the meantime, try linking to your challenges through the Challnge Catalog. Those links still work, and will get you there.

Osho, Cheryl and everyone else....
I think our shelved/not shelved experiment had nothing to do with the “challenge status update” problem. By accidental observation, and some discussion with Debra T, it appears to have something to do with the position of the challenge page within the group.
If the challenge appears on the home page; It’s All About You and Help Yourself, then the status will automatically update (after a cache cycle). If the challenge is on subsequent pages, they never will. Only a manual intervention will change the status.
I reported this to the Feedback group.

Just did it yesterday. In the meantime, you can reach them through the Challenge Catalog links.

The site's having widespread problems with a variety of types of links. I'd bet there's an underlying coding issue.

(Still can't get to 'more challenges' from the home page, but the pop-up seems to be saying they know about it, at least.)

The "first page" challenge automatically updated "You'll Love This One", but not the others.
I'm going to try it again, and wait for "cache time".

Also, if any of you know how to force an update of your tally without clicking on 'update my entry' and seeing the option to change your goal, please tell me (us)!
