I cheated and started the April Group Read early. I will not comment or review until the group starts commenting.

Have started
Robert the Bruce / Jack Whyte as a stopgap before reading the April group reads. I've gotten both the one about Babur and the ancient Greek mystery from the library so they're both ready to go.
I just started Mistress of the Revolution. I need some light reading right now. I just started a new job and I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to reading. I have heard so many members of this page discussBernard Cornwell. I am hoping to get a copy of one of his books to start reading soon. I don't have access to any of the April group reads for this group. I have given up on some of the group reads from some of the other groups I am in. I'm getting a little sick of reading the same story over and over again. At least here there seems to be some variety.
Linda wrote: "I cheated and started the April Group Read early. I will not comment or review until the group starts commenting."Me, too. Only about 30 pages in, though, so I can hold my fire for a few days. ;-)

I have finished Meadowland: A Novel of the Viking Discovery of America 3 starsGone back to the one I paused before Meadowland
Finshed Double Down: Game Change 2012Interesting for Political junkies, but a very irrating writing style - 3 stars
Currently reading a biograhpy of Teddy Roosevelt's oldest son
He was the only General Officer to land with the first wave on D-Day. He was played by Henry Fonda in the movie the Longest Day.
I found his grave when visiting the Normandy Beaches a few years ago. He is buried in the American Military Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach next to his brother who was killed in WW I.
Gretchen I am so envious that you haven't read any of bernard cornwell's books yet! Hmm what can I recommend for someone just starting out? Unless you really like soldiering stories, start with the Saxon tales, the first in the series (I can't think of the name of it right now). Then go on, I think this series benefits from being read in order, although that doesn't matter as long as you read them all. Then there's the King Arthur series, which a lot of people like but I have found sometimes a little arcane. Ha! Well, maybe that's the idea, right! Then of course, for the world's best soldier, start with sharpes tiger. Or, better still, go to BCs website and have a field day! Good hunting!

I find that while I did not like this one, most people do and by 'most people' I mean from all walks of life. It seems to have a broad appeal.
Azincourt (add book/author not working)

Thank you guys for all of your input. I haven't made a decision yet (book decisions are the hardest kind) but I have time. My hold list at the library is currently maxed out. I have a five year old on a Curious George kick.

I just found it in a box of stuff I was planning on donating. Guess I know which book I'm starting with.
Marius' Mules: Gallia Invicta. Will be starting
Empress of the Night: A Novel of Catherine the Great next.

Oh Michelle it's been a long long drink between "a dance with dragons" and the next book!! I'll have to reread it just to remember what went on, lol.
I am still reading
Not really into it and only reading a few pages each night in an effort to GET into it. Not working.
It isn't that the book is bad, I just don't think it suits my mood right now.
Incriminating Evidence by Sheldon Siegel. After reading two historical fiction books within a week, I felt like reading a murder mystery. So far the book is ok.
Am perusing
The Epigrams of Martial. Even with Victorian English, I can see why Martial is justly famous.

Good choice. :)
Mailman just left The Ghosts of Smyrna / Loren Edizel, a GR first-reads, and I couldn't resist and ploughed in. It seems good so far [3 chapters in], post WWI in a mostly Greek neighborhood in Smyrna, Turkey.
Just finished The Pursuit of Mary Bennet: A Pride & Prejudice Novel—which I enjoyed, although I suspect it's a bit too fem for this group.A friend alerted me to Bernard Bailyn's The Barbarous Years: The Peopling of British North America: The Conflict of Civilizations, 1600-1675, which gives a really impressive context not only for its subjects, the Native Americans and early English settlers, but also on related people such as the Tatars and even Babur.
And yes, I am still working on The Whooper Swan.
Bobby might like this oneCurrently reading Ben Bradlee's new biography of the great American Baseball player Ted Williams
Since there are so many C.J. Sansom fans here and I didn't see a C.J. Sansom folder, for those interested here are my thoughts on his latest.Dominion
This book IS NOT historical fiction, but Alternate fiction - set in a 1952, where Britian has lost the war or more accurately WW II ended for Britain in 1940 with the fall of France.

Ahhh...alternate fiction..I didn't realise. I always thought I would read that one day, but I really don't like alternate fiction.... unless I don't realise that it is alternate. :)
Terri wrote: "Ahhh...alternate fiction..I didn't realise. I always thought I would read that one day, but I really don't like alternate fiction.... unless I don't realise that it is alternate. :)"Neither do I. To me it's neither fish nor fowl: not really HF nor SF, maybe fantasy w/ HF tinge...
Oddly enough I quite enjoy what I call "speculative fiction". I've always enjoyed seeing where someone's imagination and love of history takes them.Harry Turtledove is one of the best writers in this area. My favourite is his World at War series. What might have happened if, during WWII, there had been an alien invasion. :D

Turtledove is one of my favorites - though his last couple seemed to be almost mailed in :(

The Yellowstone Super volcano ones? They were appalling.
I haven't read the super volcano ones yet - sounds like there will be a lot of books read before I get to those :)
What I'm reading has turned into a soppy romance after a strong beginning, so I've put it aside for now. I hope it will pick up. I've started
The Corpus Conundrum: A Third Case from the Notebooks of Pliny the Younger: A Novel / Albert A. Bell Jr.
I just started The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. This is first of her books I have read and I am hoping I am not wasting my time.
Sandra wrote: "I just started The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. This is first of her books I have read and I am hoping I am not wasting my time."It's not too bad, Sandra. I think it is one of her better ones.
Sandra wrote: "I just started The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. This is first of her books I have read and I am hoping I am not wasting my time."I thought it was pretty good too. The tv series was well done, as well. I see the
is out but haven't got to it yet.
Starting a book in Spanish Dime quién soy. is good to read again in my language. Haven't done in a while. Pretty good read so far.
Hi all. I'm reading The Rebels by John Jakes and Sons of Zeus by Noble Smith. I can't say enough good things about Noble's writing abilities. Great book and series.
