Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments I cheated and started the April Group Read early. I will not comment or review until the group starts commenting.

Jane | 3480 comments Have started Robert the Bruce (Guardians Trilogy) by Jack Whyte Robert the Bruce / Jack Whyte as a stopgap before reading the April group reads. I've gotten both the one about Babur and the ancient Greek mystery from the library so they're both ready to go.

Gretchen (eab2012) I just started Mistress of the Revolution. I need some light reading right now. I just started a new job and I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to reading. I have heard so many members of this page discussBernard Cornwell. I am hoping to get a copy of one of his books to start reading soon. I don't have access to any of the April group reads for this group. I have given up on some of the group reads from some of the other groups I am in. I'm getting a little sick of reading the same story over and over again. At least here there seems to be some variety.

Me, too. Only about 30 pages in, though, so I can hold my fire for a few days. ;-)

Yep, me too. Though I won't be getting far before April 1st.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Finshed Double Down: Game Change 2012

Interesting for Political junkies, but a very irrating writing style - 3 stars

Currently reading a biograhpy of Teddy Roosevelt's oldest son

The Namesake The Biography of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. by Robert W. Walker
He was the only General Officer to land with the first wave on D-Day. He was played by Henry Fonda in the movie the Longest Day.

I found his grave when visiting the Normandy Beaches a few years ago. He is buried in the American Military Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach next to his brother who was killed in WW I.

Nancy Brumback | 85 comments Gretchen I am so envious that you haven't read any of bernard cornwell's books yet! Hmm what can I recommend for someone just starting out? Unless you really like soldiering stories, start with the Saxon tales, the first in the series (I can't think of the name of it right now). Then go on, I think this series benefits from being read in order, although that doesn't matter as long as you read them all. Then there's the King Arthur series, which a lot of people like but I have found sometimes a little arcane. Ha! Well, maybe that's the idea, right! Then of course, for the world's best soldier, start with sharpes tiger. Or, better still, go to BCs website and have a field day! Good hunting!

Hi Gretchen,
I find that while I did not like this one, most people do and by 'most people' I mean from all walks of life. It seems to have a broad appeal.

Gretchen (eab2012) Thank you guys for all of your input. I haven't made a decision yet (book decisions are the hardest kind) but I have time. My hold list at the library is currently maxed out. I have a five year old on a Curious George kick.

Yes, I'm replying to my own comment. I know. Update. Apparently once upon a time, I bought a copy of The Winter King at a library book sale. I just found it in a box of stuff I was planning on donating. Guess I know which book I'm starting with.

Not really into it and only reading a few pages each night in an effort to GET into it. Not working.

It isn't that the book is bad, I just don't think it suits my mood right now.

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 564 comments Just finished The Pursuit of Mary Bennet: A Pride & Prejudice Novel—which I enjoyed, although I suspect it's a bit too fem for this group.

A friend alerted me to Bernard Bailyn's The Barbarous Years: The Peopling of British North America: The Conflict of Civilizations, 1600-1675, which gives a really impressive context not only for its subjects, the Native Americans and early English settlers, but also on related people such as the Tatars and even Babur.

And yes, I am still working on The Whooper Swan.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Since there are so many C.J. Sansom fans here and I didn't see a C.J. Sansom folder, for those interested here are my thoughts on his latest.

Dominion

This book IS NOT historical fiction, but Alternate fiction - set in a 1952, where Britian has lost the war or more accurately WW II ended for Britain in 1940 with the fall of France.

Neither do I. To me it's neither fish nor fowl: not really HF nor SF, maybe fantasy w/ HF tinge...

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Oddly enough I quite enjoy what I call "speculative fiction". I've always enjoyed seeing where someone's imagination and love of history takes them.

Harry Turtledove is one of the best writers in this area. My favourite is his World at War series. What might have happened if, during WWII, there had been an alien invasion. :D
