At least Michal's Window is improving....once you get past the initial smoochie stuff it does seem to be a moderately decent historical novel.

This one keeps coming up in my recommendations, but wasn't sure whether it was just a bodice ripper type book or actually about a strong woman overcoming problems in a difficult time. Wouldn't be interested in the former, but would be in the latter.

Yeah, yeah, keep it down up there in the peanut gallery! You all might drive me into the arms of chick lit and before you know it, I'll be applying for a moderators job over in a historical romance group. :)
That'll teach you!
Finished
The Iron Wyrm Affair by Lilith Saintcrow. I really liked it, quite interesting steampunk/fantasy world with a cool Holmes type character, though no Watson so far. I see a potential one for the next book though. Mass amounts of action and a pretty good mystery. I added the next on to the TBR already. :)I'm starting
Honour And The Sword by A.L. Berridge as the book has been brought up elsewhere and now I'm curious.
Okay, feedback on GodivaI wanted so much to like this book. It is set in an era I like and I wanted to be proven wrong that all hf with glamorous women covers are chick lit HF.
Well, the book is most definitely chick lit. It is about as chick lit as you can get and I think sticking pins in my eyes would be more pleasant than continuing on with it.
But, I have to...it was a New Years resolution to make myself read a bunch of books on my real shelves that I had been avoiding. Although I feel I wasted money on this book by buying it, I would have felt like I wasted even more if I had never forced myself to read it.
Any members more adapted to reading heavily girlie hist fic, you may like it. Don't be put off by my aversion to it. This book is just soooo not what i like to read about.
Jean wrote: "'Knight in Anarchy' looks interesting and will feed my 12th C obsession, at some stage! Oo-err - took a look at the blurb and don't like the sound of 'mutilated' :(Be warned - the George Shipway novels are brutally realistic and spare the reader nothing as regards the cruelties of Medieval Warfare, and indeed normal life. Even four decades after reading some of them the memory of some descriptions are unpleasant.

Saw this one on Amazon for $2.99 (Kindle version). Had read the sample, and like Morgan Llywelyn's writing so downloaded it and started the read before we move on to the February Group books.

right now. I still can't manage to reread Eaters of the Dead. I remember it too much not to get distracted, not enough to discuss it. Blah.
Some rereads are like that. The intention is there, but if it still too fresh in the memory, it is hard to keep interested.
Terri wrote: "I see that one around, Monica, so as you read it I would appreciate some feedback. :-)"Will do! The first chapter is good...have to recharge the Kindle before I continue. Don't want any more "car horns" sounding off in the middle of the night...lol!
Monica wrote: "Saw this one on Amazon for $2.99 (Kindle version). Had read the sample, and like Morgan Llywelyn's writing..."I began her Druids. It's sitting with a bookmark in. Not bad, though can't belong to this group (other than here and the Fantasy thread) as isn't straight histfic. --Damned if I can find an ebook of that title on Amazon, Monica. I'm no use today. Can I bother you for a link?
Monica wrote: "Will do! The first chapter is good...have to recharge the Kindle before I continue. Don't want..."
Hahaha. No. That is not good. :D

Oh, did you want The Druids as an ebook? Can't find that one, except in paper.
Bryn wrote: "Thanks so, Monica. --No, I've got Druids in paperback, that'll do me. :)"You're welcome...enjoy!
Oh, bad luck, Marina.Coincidentally, I have started the 4th in that series today. I haven't met a book in this series that i didn't like.
Revelation
Terri,Thomas BulfinchLegends of Charlemagne; or Romance of the Middle Ages
FYI ALERT
A while ago someone in Random Thoughts or another place asked about a book about Charlemagne. This book is old and free from google.books.com. The digitalized copy has errors, but the book is easy to read.
Linda wrote: "Terri,Thomas BulfinchLegends of Charlemagne; or Romance of the Middle Ages

Good catch, Linda, this a classic! I had forgotten about it. It is part of the Bulfinch's Mythology collection. Written in the 1850-1860 time period I believe.
Terri wrote: "I see that one around, Monica, so as you read it I would appreciate some feedback. :-)"I'm half way through this book. A solid 4 stars. There are some "dangling" storylines that I'm waiting to see woven back into the mix, but overall well written. I like how the battle scenes evolve...strategies adapted, characters changed by the experience...rather than the cookie-cutter "move to another location and hack, slash, spill guts, then repeat these steps" approach.
Tried reading Heresy. Could only give it 1* Grated on me and writing style was so weak after having recently finished two excellent books by strong authors. Shame because I'd been looking forward to it...
I finished
Honour And The Sword by A.L. Berridge. 2 star for me. Not gripping, far too disjointed, weak characters and average writing.I've started
Arms of Nemesis by Steven Saylor and I already know I'll like this one as book #1 was fantastic.
That's bad news, Dawn, on Honour and the Sword. I started too and I've liked the beginning. I paid up so I'll go on.
I'd like to know if you end up feeling the same. I thought it was okay at the beginning as well. Not wonderful or life changing but a good book. Pretty much decided I didn't like it by halfway. I'm trying to pick out what really bugged me about the book and I've mostly decided it's the characters, I just didn't like them.
Okay. I'll take that on board. Let's see. --I thought the first voice, the one who tells the tale first, very well-done, and thought I can live with a novel in several voices if they're individuals like this. Haven't got far.
Paul wrote: "Tried reading Heresy. Could only give it 1* Grated on me and writing style was so weak after having recently finished two excellent books by strong authors. Shame because I'd been looking forward t..."Hi Paul,
I have not read it, but I have heard similar things from Goodreads Friends before on that book.
Additional. If this is simplistic and so-so I'm going to have a beef with the blogger who told me how intelligent and out of the ordinary run it is. At times I just don't know why I listen to people. --Truth is I rarely listen to people, on principle, but I slip now and then. :}
Oh, I haven't given up on Stonehenge, Terri. Besides, I didn't mean you. :] See, I have listened to you, you've quoted the proof, and that's me who doesn't believe in this listening-to-people lark, you know.
Yeah. i knew you didn't mean me.' Lol! At least I won't lead you too far astray in my recs. You may have to suck a few lemons, but mostly it will be oranges. :-)
Bryn wrote: "Uh-oh. If that's not a corrupting influence... cannot use the word 'benign' here..."LOL. One woman's corruption is another woman's benignity.
I've just started
It is the 16th century, and basically it's the Hospitallers against Suleiman the Magnificent. This is a time period I know very little about.
It promises to be very good from the 20 pp. I've read so far.
Terri wrote: "I have often wondered about that book, Jane. Will be interested in your thoughts as you go,"So far, you have to get used to his style: many long sentences and overuse of the conjunction "and". I am guessing there will be many Turkish terms, probably unfamiliar to most of us. There is a glossary in the back, which should be helpful. The Religion
