Hope your Paperwhite works for you, otherwise it will be an awfully expensive "paper weight"."

Thanks for the good thoughts Monica - It works perfectly. I installed the saddle-tan cover, loaded it up, gave it to the wife, she loved it, then our 12 year old daughter prompty tried to claim it. Not happening. Can't wait to start using it myself. I'm such a sucker for stuff like this. No sign of any Kindle Kops coming after me ... yet

Simona | 1453 comments Sometimes I do, between "It can't be like this until the end" and "what the hell, at least I'll know how it ends".

message 1405: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments AND, I've finished my collections - a true Lady-with-the-sickle, if I say so. Kindle Freebies, beware!

message 1406: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I cannot finish books that appall me either.

I have a feeling that Margaret was going down Simona's suggestion of "it can't be like this until the end"

It appears as though it was. Poor Margaret. :(

Hope you like it Margaret, I gave it four stars. I'm going to do a fuller review when I get back from holiday at the weekend.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Bryn wrote: "You finish books that appall you?"

I feel that as I am doing the challenge this year, it would slew the results for me not to finish a book. This is a new experience for me...finishing appalling, crap books.

My reading motto has always been "Life's too short to read crap books".

I was. It was the first one "it can't be like this until the end". Unfortunately, it was. :(

Anne (spartandax) | 797 comments I am currently reading Freedom's Sword by J.R. Tomlin and liking it very much. I am also reading one which I shall not mention due to Terri's fear of Romances-LOL. I will be starting a histori of Germany titled A Mighty Fortress A New History of the German People by Steven E. Ozment . Love the title, guess it came from the song.

message 1413: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments One of the reasons I don't do a challenge is that I'm a dreadful non-finisher and then my efforts go to waste.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments Bryn wrote: "One of the reasons I don't do a challenge is that I'm a dreadful non-finisher and then my efforts go to waste."

I'm trying to change that, and felt the challenge would be a good way to do it.

Terri | 19576 comments I am between a rock and a hard place with the GR Challenge. I don't want to do it anymore, but I have done 2011 and 2012. I could not stand the thought of not having the next one on my profile.
It is kind of like 'now' I need to collect the Challenges in sequence and not miss a year...:/ like collecting books in a series.

message 1416: by Betty (new)

Betty (betty30554) Have started Freedom's Sword by J.R. Tomlin. I really enjoyed the first book A Kingdom's Cost. Interesting and, as best as I can tell, historically accurate. Reminiscent of BC.

message 1417: by Betty (new)

Betty (betty30554) Please help - I'm technologically challenged. And it seems ya'll are the right group to beg assistance from. I have Kindle for PC that I got from Amazon. I also have Kindle for Android. The problem I am having is that if I get books from Gutenberg project, Smashwords - basically anywhere but from Amazon, they will load on my computer, but I can't get them on my droid. Bearing in mind that I am tech-challenged, how can I get these other books on my droid?

message 1418: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments I have a Kobo and what I do, is find the book from my "download" file on my PC and copy and paste them to my device.

If you open up your Start menu on your PC and select "my computer" a window should pop up and all these thing should be on the left hand side of that window. First plug in your Android so that it will also appear on the list. I hope that helps.
Any books not .epub might copy but may not work, you'll have to get a conversion programme for that next. But give this a try for now and let us know if it works.

message 1419: by Bobby (new)

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments I don't get that many from somewhere other than Amazon but had the same problem once w/Smashmouth and there is a place on Amazon "Managing Your Kindle" and a help section where you ask Amazon to call you and they do!!! Instantly! And they talked me through it. Give that a try.

I can be a bit of a statistics freak at times. I'm keen to see how many books I will manage and have a record of exactly what new books I read during the year.

Also Betty, have you got the kobo app on your droid?
I have Kindle and Kobo on my droid plus the one it came loaded with.

If you need to convert files from mobi (kindle) to go with any other form of ebook reader, or in turn, to go from other formats to the mobi kindle format, there is the program calibre. Many people use that program.

message 1424: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments I do, since like Betty I buy also from Smashwords and such. It's a very handy program and easy to use, doesn't take much space on the hard disk either.

message 1425: by Len (new)

Len Rivera | 1 comments I am reading Excalibur (The Warlord Chronicles, #3) by Bernard Cornwell by Bernard Cornwell. I've really enjoyed The Warlord Chronicle series and am looking forward to the continuation of the Saxon Chronicles with a new book due out this September!

message 1426: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments Hi there Len,
The Saxon series is my favourite BC. Love it.
Of the Arthur series, I think that one you are on, Excalibur was my least fabourite of that trilogy. I quite enjoyed the first two though.

Welcome to the group, Len. :-)

Antoine Vanner | 21 comments George ShipwayThe Paladin
If you can run down any of the medieval novels (such as "The Paladin" or "Knight in Anarchy") by George Shipway you will be in for a treat. He was a superb writer and his novels set in British India, reflecting his service in a British Indian Cavalry regiment, were also excellent. Whether Medieval or Indian his work was founded on deep research on detail and knowledge of the era. I didn't read a single one of his books that I didn't enjoy.

I read this back in the seventies and liked it, but I don't remember it well enough to rate it.

I agree, and I read them all but I started to like them a bit less from "Fever Dream" (today GR doesn't want to put in the link!!!!). They started a lot of very confused and confusing threads, and the love story with Helen is really too much drama for me. IMHO.

I LOVE P&C. Their books are terrific and they have written some good one's singly as well. I have their latest on hold at the library.

Mark | 1885 comments Going start reading this series again, the last book in the 14 book series has just come out.

The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan

It's fantasy.

message 1444: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I have read a few at the start of that Wheel of Time series. Still own that book one....and a couple others I think.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 1505 comments WoT - Me tooish. I don't think I finished the first... had them so urged upon me by a friend that I got a 2ndhand deal of a stack of them. They get grabbier as they go, the friend told me.

message 1446: by Mark (new)

Mark | 1885 comments I have all of the main books, and a few of the novelettes he wrote.

Months of reading.

Yes, and I like that total-immersion idea. If ever I'm in the mood, my stack comes up to my knee.

message 1448: by Mark (new)

Mark | 1885 comments Been meaning to do it for years, I have read up to end of book 9. But I need to restart as I have forgot most the books.

message 1449: by Terri, Wyrd bið ful aræd (new)

Terri | 19576 comments I can't read a whole series one after the other. Especially one that long. I get burn out. :-)

message 1450: by Simona (new)

Simona | 1453 comments mmmm...it depends. Reading two, three books together helps. :)
Was it Brandon Sanderson that finished the Wheel of Time series?
