Gretchen (eab2012) American Gods by Neil Gaiman American Gods
Constantly seeing the trailer for the television show convinced me to finally read this book. I feel like one of the few people in the world who has never read a Gaiman novel.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Finished The Quest for El Cid

Not bad, but not great. Very short - just over 200 pgs, and dry. It has an academic feel to it. Decent primer on the history of Medieval Spain from the Muslim invasions in about 800 AD up to about the yr 1200. The career/life of El Cid is roughly the last half of the book. El Cid was active in the late 11th century roughly at the same time as William the Conqueror.

my thoughts if anyone is interested

Currently reading a NF book on WW II in the Crimea

Where the Iron Crosses Grow The Crimea 1941–44 by Robert Forczyk

It's a theme read for another group.

Rachel Tsoumbakos (racheltsoumbakos) I'm just finishing up Norse Mythology. I am completely loving it, especially since I was previously reading the original sources for the Viking sagas and they can be quite 'dry' to read.

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments Currently I am reading The Cat From Hue by John Laurence who did 3 tours of duty as a TV reporter for CBS TV from 1965-1970. I find it fascinating and nearly fifty years after the events took place it offers a good personal perspective. I remember coming home from work and seeing Laurence giving his report. His book is not just past memories; he took personal notes all during his time in Vietnam; what he saw: what he thought; his own personal PTSD he suffered from. The willful blindness of the politicians in Washington plus the bs from high placed US Military. It's offers a good view of how a regular, patriotic American could be turned against a government so full of lies and deceit. I must get off my soapbox. This is a really good, informative book.

Renata (rderis) | 236 comments Rereading Ravenspur Rise of the Tudors (The Wars of the Roses, #4) by Conn Iggulden in sequence this time. I skipped right to it the first time I read it.

Now that I've read books 1-3 in Conn Iggulden's series I want to see how it reads differently for me. A few people say this is the weakest book. Curious to see what I think this time around.

Bloodline (Wars of the Roses, #3) by Conn Iggulden will be hard to top.

message 8176: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Umm, I might just pick up Bloodline.

message 8177: by Ace (new)

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments I need to get on the Iggulden bandwagon. Mr Ace owns most of these so I should read them.

Also we both just decided that Roseblood would be something we will both read and splurged on an Amazon purchase! $9.12 USD.

Bobby (bobbej) | 1375 comments Just finished Camino Island by John Grisham and what a fun, riveting read. Even non-Grisham fans should enjoy this one. Thirty years ago Robert Redford would have BEEN Bruce Cable!!

message 8179: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar After reading a couple of novels in the interim, I have just started the last book in the Boudica series, Dreaming the Serpent Spear. It's been a great series. I've really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading this.

I finished Dance of Death - good mystery, set against the first shooting down of a Zepplin over London.

I'm not sure what I am reading next, but it will probably be NF.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I finished Paul Doherty's Pilgrimage of Murder

Fun read - set in the aftermath of the peasants revolt of 1381, some of John of Gaunts clerks are being garroted, as usual Bro Athelstan is coopted into helping solve the murders as he is preparing for a pilgrimage to Canterbury and Beckett's tomb.

The plot has some nice twists and turns as well as excellent period detail - solid 4 stars

I'll resume my reading of Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America

Tamara Agha-Jaffar I finished the final book in the Boudica series, Dreaming the Serpent Spear by Manda Scott. I had some minor quibbles with the book, but on the whole I thought it was great. I gave the book 4 stars.

I have loved the whole series, and I am very thankful to Terri for recommending it to me. It's been an exciting journey.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I finished Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America

Much more than a look a the disaster - a good look at the culture, politics and life style of the Mississippi Delta and how the flood changed them. 4.25 stars if GR allowed

I'm currently read Ian Mortimer's bio of England's Edward III

The Perfect King The Life of Edward III, Father of the English Nation by Ian Mortimer

message 8195: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I've finished Guernica. Didn't love it. 3.5 stars. The plot is a bit disjointed, although the writing is fine.

Veronica (readingonthefly) I finished The Late Show The Late Show (Renée Ballard, #1) by Michael Connelly and am just about done with Past Crimes Past Crimes (Van Shaw #1) by Glen Erik Hamilton , both of which I've enjoyed. Today I'll be starting Age of Swords Age of Swords (The Legends of the First Empire, #2) by Michael J. Sullivan (fantasy book) as a buddy read.

I suggest you try the Boudica series by Manda Scott. I recently finished all four books per Terri's recommendation. I loved all four books although book 2 was my least favorite. You should read them in sequence if possible to have them make sense.
I've posted reviews of all four on goodreads and on my website at www.tamaraaghajaffar.com in case you want to check them out before taking the plunge.

Elizabeth Chadwick's William Marshall series: A Place Beyond Courage (William Marshal, #1) by Elizabeth Chadwick is book one. This series is 5 stars (and that's rare for me)!
