Pretty good solid 4 stars, the series covers an era not often written about - the post Hastings subduing of England by the Normans.
I'm not sure what of my next read either Harry Sidebottom's

The second volume in his series on 3rd century Rome
or

If you do read Blood and Steel I think you'll enjoy it.

I started

It's been excellent so far. The story is mid third century Rome and the attempt of the Gordians to take the throne.

It took a lot of self control to not stay up all night reading."
Looks good. Added to my ever growing TBR.

Started a new HF series.... Charles Lenox Mysteries by Charles Finch

I finished Blood and Steel.
Very good read, definite 4 stars. It's the story of the Gordian's, father and son, attempt to depose Maximus Thrax as emperor. It all takes place in about 2 or 3 weeks in 238 AD.

I'm familiar with O'Brien's short story, but didn't know he'd written a novel with the same title.

Glad you agreed with me. :)

What a good idea! I'm sure they'll love it!
I loved The Plague.

Adams' Watership Down is a fictional comment on Nazi-ism in conflict with more democratic government, I think. But more than that, it is a wonderful story with captivating characters facing challenges to survival and incredible conflict. Powerful, evocative, and true in the best sense of 'true'!

The USF is putting on two of my favorites this year - Henry V and Much Ado along with Julius Cesar

I've picked up Outlander....
And I like it.
:P"
I liked Outlander so much more than I ever thought I would. I'm now on a used book store quest for the next one. I just don't think it's a book I can read in the time the library allows me.

It may not exactly fit the group criteria, since it is a very, very fictionised version of Tudor story with Sidhe mixing themselves up in the affairs of England. Still, my review, if interested;

This whole series is 5*s. Uhtred is a great, flawed hero. My review has a couple spoilers, but here's the link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... .

I am in the second book, But yes.So far I am enjoying all the highs and lows of Uhtred's life.

I finished Shakespeare and the Countess: The Battle that Gave Birth to the Globe.
Not bad, but the title is a bit of a misnomer - Shakespeare and the Globe don't appear until the book is about 2/3rds done. This is really a biography of Elizabeth Russell - the self-styled Dowager Countess of Beford. According the practices of the English Nobility, she really wasn't.
I found it to be a weak 4 star read and a little dry in spots
My thoughts if anyone is intrested.

I want to re-read it now!
